Picture: Thai Rath Thai Rath reported that a seriously injured man went to a military unit in Samnak Kham sub-dictrict of Sadao, Songkhla, telling how he had been kept chained up and assaulted by the son of a politician in the area. The alleged assailant is the owner of a business producing fighting cows for the popular southern Thai sport of "chon wua". The injured man is an employee. Maen, 33, was in chains on his hands and had bruises over his entire body including his eye and had been starved of food and water for two days. He managed to get away by loosening his chains and somehow stealing a local's motorcycle and travelling the two kilometers to the army camp. He was given food and drink as army personnel assessed his injuries and cut off the chains from his hands. He said that he had been ordered by the politician's son to bury a gun in a bamboo thicket but the gun was stolen and he was blamed. He was being punished as a result. Sadao police were contacted and he was taken to hospital where an xray revealed a broken arm. Doctors said he should stay in the hospital but he refused fearing that his boss would come looking for him. He contacted a friend and fled the area telling no one where he was going and refusing to file a police report about what had happened to him. This all played out on Sunday evening in the district of Sadao that borders Malaysia. -- © Copyright ASEAN NOW 2022-08-30 - Cigna offers a range of visa-compliant plans that meet the minimum requirement of medical treatment, including COVID-19, up to THB 3m. Bangkok morning turns to night - it's climate change as top Thai scientist warns of more "extreme weather" Picture: Siam Rath A top scientist in Thailand has predicted that the country is now entering the start of a period of "extreme weather". Picture: Siam Rath A top scientist in Thailand has predicted that the country is now entering the start of a period of "extreme weather". Dr Thon Thamrongnawasawat, a marine scientist at Kaset university in the Thai capital, went on his personal Facebook page to make the warning after Bangkokian's woke to hellish looking clouds yesterday morning. People on social media posted video and pictures as scary and fast moving clouds rolled over Bangkok turning morning into night, reported Siam Rath. Though for many the storm's bark was worse than its bite, it dumped little rain in some areas and soon moved on, though the day remained unclear with intermittent showers until further evening light shows notes ASEAN NOW. The met office has predicted storms and lightning all week. Dr Thon said: "It turned Bangkok from morning into night. It was "maek loke rorn" (hot earth clouds)", he said. This resulted from a warming ocean, evaporation and hot weather meaning there was more vapor in the atmosphere, he noted. ASEAN NOW picture He said that the clouds contained a huge volume of water to dump but there was not much rain - this time. But wait for next time this happens or subsequent times. He called it the start of "extreme weather" - a term he used in English. This is due to climate change, he continued, with greehouse gases in the atmosphere that would cause "devastating consequences especially in countries that are economically fragile". He cited Pakistan as an example of this with great swathes of the country reportedly under water at this time after some of the most serious flooding there in memory. -- © Copyright ASEAN NOW 2022-08-30 - Cigna offers a range of visa-compliant plans that meet the minimum requirement of medical treatment, including COVID-19, up to THB 3m. A panoramic view of Bangkok at dusk. The Thai capital has attracted Chinese homebuyers in recent years. Photo: iStock Relaxation of ownership laws aims at wealthy Chinese but political opposition says scheme will widen the wealth divide By PREM SINGH GILL Thailand has been a popular expatriate destination for investment and retirement for decades, but foreign land ownership has long been restricted. Foreigners can own no more than 49% of any condominium development and are restricted from owning most freehold estates. Yet Thailand is keen to attract wealthy international investors — particularly those from China. Thailand’s now-suspended Prime Minister Prayut Chan-ocha proposed a policy that would allow foreigners to own land for residential use on July 15, 2022. Thai officials claim this will boost the economy by luring wealthy foreigners to spend and invest in the country. Investing 40 million baht (US$1.1 million) in Thai property, securities or funds for a period of at least three years is now one of many preconditions for foreign nationals to own up to one rai (approximately 1,600 square meters) of land beginning in September 2022. The foreigner was at one point knocked to the pavement during the extended altercation. The incident was recorded by a passer-by, showing a foreigner of unknown nationality and identification who stood over 180 cm tall arguing with a Thai woman. “You eat my food. It is not for free,” the woman shouted at the man but the man only said “No, you don’t understand”, tried to calm her down briefly, and then tried to walk away before also getting angry and raising his voice. Insurgent Barisan Revolusi Nasional (BRN) behind firebomb spree in the South raises the stakes by Carla Boonkong & Pranee O' Connor Anas Abdulrahman is the lead negotiator for the Barisan Revolusi Nasional (BRN) which met the Thai Peace Dialogue Panel led by General Wanlop Rugsanoh, a senior security official with Thailand’s Ministry of Defence, on August 1st/2nd in Kuala Lumpur in talks being facilitated by Malaysia. Anas Abdulrahman is the lead negotiator for the Barisan Revolusi Nasional (BRN) which met the Thai Peace Dialogue Panel led by General Wanlop Rugsanoh, a senior security official with Thailand’s Ministry of Defence, on August 1st/2nd in Kuala Lumpur in talks being facilitated by Malaysia. by Carla Boonkong & Pranee O' Connor Deadly attacks which killed one and injured eight were condemned by the government as an ‘outrage’ but are believed to have been a response to a lack of progress at peace talks being facilitated by Malaysia where the parties last came to gather on August 1st and 2nd in Kuala Lumpur. It is understood the Barisan Revolusi Nasional (BRN) want to see more ambitious progress and legal immunity for exiled leaders to return. This month’s coordinated firebomb attacks in the Southern provinces of Thailand which saw 17 different locations targeted at the same time in the early hours of August 17th with an earlier attack on August 15th is a clear signal to officials in Bangkok that the main insurgent group Barisan Revolusi Nasional (BRN) is ready to pursue a scorched earth policy in the region targeting national firms and infrastructure if talks between it and a Thai government panel being held in Malaysia fail to make a breakthrough. An analyst and former student activist has suggested that the co-ordinated bombing spree which occurred across the southern provinces in the early hours of Wednesday 17th of August last with an earlier incident on August 15th was the work of the revolutionary group Barisan Revolusi Nasional (BRN) and a response to a stalemate in talks between the government and the leadership of the insurgency which are sponsored by Malaysia. Who would Thailand have to deal with if Putin falls ill? Russian Security Council Secretary Nikolai Patrushev and Russia's President Vladimir Putin File photo The mysterious death last week of a prominent critic of Vladimir Putin’s invasion of Ukraine in Washington’s West End neighborhood, coupled with the recent car bomb attack on a Putin ally, is drawing fury from some of the Kremlin’s best-known global detractors. Will this pressure speed up the removal of President Putin to make way for a new President? Although officially the next in line behind Putin would be Dmitry Medvedev, who has been serving as the deputy chairperson of the Security Council of Russia since 2020. However, a former KGB comrade of Vladimir Putin's, Russian Security Council Secretary Nikolai Patrushev could be selected as the most likely candidate to take the Russian president's place in power, according to the former head of British intelligence. Back in February 2018 Nikolai Patrushev, Secretary of the Security Council of the Russian Federation, paid a working visit to Bangkok. He was received by H.E. General Prayut Chan-o-cha, Prime Minister of the Kingdom of Thailand. Mr. Nikolai Patrushev also held meetings with H.E. General Prawit Wongsuwon, Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Defence of Thailand and H.E. General Wanlop Rugsanaoh, Secretary-General of the National Security Council of Thailand. Mr. Nikolai Patrushev and General Prayut Chan-o-cha discussed a broad range of issues in the Russian-Thai relations with a focus on interaction in enhancing international and regional security. So at least the Thai government has had dialogue before. As reported by Business Insider, speculation over a possible Putin replacement has been a topic of conversation recently due to a variety of news that the Russian President’s health could be in decline. Kremlin insiders and Russian society have even behind closed doors have discussed what would happen if Putin were forced out over the Ukrainian invasion or succumbs to a hypothetical illness. Sir Richard Dearlove, who served as head of the UK's Secret Intelligence Service from 1999 to 2004, claimed that the most likely heir candidate is Nikolai Patrushev, the secretary of Russia's Security Council and a longtime Putin ally known to be one of the exceedingly few officials to have the president's trust. The former MI6 chief has previously theorized about Putin's likely longevity. Dearlove has been known to predict that Putin could be forced into a medical facility for long-term illness in an effort to remove the president without a coup. The Kremlin has strenuously denied that the President is suffering from any health issues, and Putin himself said in June that such claims were "greatly exaggerated." Over in the States, CIA Director William Burns this month also dispelled rumors about the state of Putin's health, saying "as far as we can tell, he's entirely too healthy." But questions do remain, and Patrushev's emergence as a dependable front man are gaining momentum A spokesperson for the Russian Security Council brushed aside that Patrushev is seeking any advancement. Still, it seems experts consider Patrushev a man to watch. But whether Patrushev or any other selected replacement would last, is another question entirely, the experts said. And would the Russian foreign policy remain, and could we hope for in a new President with a more peaceful attitude? We will just have to watch this space. -- © Copyright ASEAN NOW 2022-08-30 - Cigna offers a range of visa-compliant plans that meet the minimum requirement of medical treatment, including COVID-19, up to THB 3m.
