Pig farmers are demanding that the Ministry of Agriculture and Agricultural Cooperatives aggressively cracks down on unscrupulous traders, who have been flooding the domestic market with smuggled pork which, they claim, will ruin the country’s pig rearing business in the long run. The demand was addressed to Agriculture Minister Chalermchai Sri-on by the Swine Raisers Association of Thailand and pig farmers’ associations, representing farmers in five regions of the country. Surachai Sutthitham, president of the Swine Raisers Association of Thailand, told the media yesterday (Tuesday) that smuggled pork is normally sold in markets at between 130 and 135 baht/kg, compared to 190-200 baht/kg for locally-produced pork. Thai Rath said he was determined to make the Thai capital welcoming for people of all nations and ethnic diversities. The title came with English in brackets of: Efforts of the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia in serving Muslim Brothers. The event was organised by the Saudi Embassy and Chadchart was met by H.E. Mr Essam Saleh H. Algetale representing the embassy. The event has run in Suan Luang district (Ramkhamhaeng Soi 2) at the Foundation for Islamic Center of Thailand since August 12th and closes today. ASEAN NOW notes that diplomatic relations between Thailand and Saudi Arabia have entered a new era since the hatchet was finally buried over an infamous saga called the Blue Diamond Affair. Unresolved crimes embittered relations that were triggered by the 1989 theft of gems belonging to the House of Saud by a Thai employee. The thief was jailed for seven years serving just three in Thailand and when stolen items from the 91 kg haul of jewelry were returned the Blue Diamond was missing and about half of the gems were fake. Rumors were rife that Thai police and VIPs took the jewels for themselves. Many murders of Saudis dogged the case but most were unsolved. A lieutenant general in the RTP who investigated the case was sentenced to death for the 1995 murder of the wife and son of a gems dealer though the sentence was later commuted to 50 years in prison. Six other policemen were convicted of involvement in various murders. On January 26th of this year full diplomatic relations were finally restored. Since then there have been several high level meetings with many centering on the start of Thai workers once again being welcomed back to employment in Saudi Arabia. Plus Saudis being encouraged to holiday in Thailand and Thais being allowed on the hajj pilgrimage. Suspened PM Prayuth Chan-ocha has visited Riyadh. Naew Na Thai Caption: Warning about repeat of Great Flood 2011 - Bangkok to disappear from world maps by 2100 Some of the direst warnings in more than a decade have been issued from two major Thai sources regarding severe flooding this year in Bangkok, the Thai capital. The warnings are not from some conspiracy theorists; they emanate from Professor Seri Supharathit director of the Center for Climate Change and Disaster at Rangsit University and the National Disaster Prevention and Mitigation Committee. Expected rain over the next three months will be heavier and longer lasting than normal, likely heralding the worst deluges in 100 years. This will result in a different form of flooding to the Great Flood of 2011 but no less disastrous for the Thai capital that is responsible for 40% of Thailand's GDP. The organisations went further. They said that the Thai government needs to act now to follow other countries' leads in erecting sea walls and barriers over the next 30 years. And not just minor defences - major work. Prof Seri said one is needed to be erected from Pattaya to Cha-Am. This would create a massive fresh water lake in the Gulf of Thailand changing industries and tourism for ever. Without such drastic and foresightful action Bangkok will simply disappear from the world map as predicted by world climate change bodies. The alternative to action is moving the capital elsewhere. Prof Seri said that a large amount of rain and at least 2-3 major storm weather events are predicted for September to November. These will dump huge amounts of water on the central region and with the Pasak Dam already full the water will have to go somewhere. And that is towards Bangkok. But he said that though there is a high likelihood of another great flood to match the devastation caused in 2011 the flooding will be different, reported Naew Na. In that year, ASEAN NOW notes, the northern suburbs of Bangkok like Don Muang saw the flooding begin in October. Credit: Wikipedia The water came as runoff from the north where heavier than usual rain earlier spelled disaster for Bangkok as gates were opened and the suburbs were sacrificed for the sake of the central business area of the city. The water came not from overhead but gurgling up from the drains. Within hours and days it rose and rose until kayaks and boats were the only way to get around Don Muang, for example. In November of that year more inner suburbs like Chatuchak started flooding in the same manner. From the ground up. Within a day the entire area of Ratchayothin was under 50-70 centimeters of water. It was eerily quite and the weather was beautiful. But you needed a boat or wading in deep filthy water just to get to the end of your soi where the main roads were equally inundated and some city buses were the only means of transport. In Bangkok's surrounding areas like Pathum Thani great swathes of land were under three meters of water throughout the last three months of 2011. Huge damage was done to properties and motor vehicles, many of which were parked in inner Bangkok condos or on expressways for months. Schools closed or moved sites. Literally millions had to stop working. Prof Seri said this year would be different caused more directly by rain in the Central Region. Exactly how much and of what duration remains to be seen but the portents from countries and cities already flooded are dire. The liklihood of a repeat of 2011 albeit under differing curcumstances is "highly probable". He said it is time for new bangkok governor Chadchart Sittipunt to tell the public the facts about where and when low lying areas are likely to be under a meter of water. He said this was not scaremongering and would not cause panic. The city's residents will well remember 2011 that was a PR disaster though lack of warnings and political bickering. The public need to be told straight by politicians what they might expect in the coming months. Two to three major storms are expected to hit with what has happened in Seoul in South Korea and other cities providing ample warning for Thailand. Seri harped back to the 1980s when Gen Chamlong Srimuang was governor of Bangkok and the city experienced its worst flooding in 100 years. (In fact in May 1986 there was some of the worst flooding after the biggest seven hour deluge in recorded history). These events can now be linked to climate change. Seri said that Bangkok in 2022 has a high likelihood of a "worst in 100 years flooding event" like in Chamlong's era. He said that the government has failed to issue proper guidelines and is being slow to act. This can be seen against the current political shenanigans whereby politicians seem more concerned about themselves and their futures rather than the potential plight of the people in and around Bangkok. There are few viable measures in place with the government still thinking about farmer's protests that took place in Ayutthaya, Pathum Thani and Suphanburi in 2021 regarding the opening of floodgates. Seri expressed concern that the rice harvest in the Chao Praya basin might not be collected in time as flooding of the fields may make this impossible. File photo He called on the government to act now and not wait a moment longer. Not just for this year's potential for disaster but for the next eighty years. He pointed to to warnings from the International Committee on Climate Change that said without action Bangkok will be 100% under water by 2100. Global warming has placed the city on "Code Red". The Thai goverment can decide to move the capital or act to save it. If decisions are made now then they have thirty years to enact measures. The goverment needs to accept what has been done for decades in places with more forward thinking and planning - like the Netherlands, Japan, South Korea and Singapore. Decisive action needs to be made on sea defences and walls. He said that a giant defensive wall from Pattaya in Chonburi to Cha-Am in Phetchaburi needs to be constructed to save Bangkok. This will ultimately create a huge freshwater basin that will change economic activity for ever. Sea fishermen will have to change their industries and the whole area will need to be developed for a different form of tourism. Such far reaching ideas are necessary or great swathes of lowland areas will slip under the waves, as has already started. ASEAN NOW suggests that Thailand's authorities have a very poor track record in heeding warning from its own scientists let alone foreigners. Daily News Thai Caption: 10 years 'Boss Case' This coming Saturday marks the tenth anniversary of the death of Senior Police Sergeant Major Wichian Klanprasert of the Thong Lo police in Bangkok. Not so many people are familiar with the name. But almost everyone remembers the man who drove his grey Ferrari into the policeman's motorcycle and dragged him along Sukhumvit Road to his death. After taking cocaine. The man who then fled the scene without offering a scrap of assistance or bothering to report what he had done. The man who then used every device and ruse at his disposal to avoid justice before deciding the heat was sufficient - in 2017 - to make a clean break of it. He then fled Thailand too jet-setting around the globe in fancy locations where he could attend Formula 1 races and not be recognised under his baseball cap. Picture: Daily News Where he could enjoy life spending his family's billions of baht without a care in the world. Where he could laugh from afar at the pathetic attempts by the so-called Thai justice system to make him pay for what he had done. Far from the anguish of a lowly traffic cop's family. His name is of course Vorayuth Yoovudhya - far better know still as Red Bull Boss, heir to the vast fortune of the Red Bull drinks empire founded by his grandfather Chaleo. The case is one that has shaken what is loosely referred to as "Thai justice" to the core, notes ASEAN NOW. It has been mired in corruption, dodgy politics and malfeasance since Day 1 - September 3rd 2012 when Wichian's mangled body was scraped off the Bangkok tarmac. It has become a "cause celebre" for all the wrong reasons. A memorable case that most see as an example of one form of justice for the poor and another for the rich. Most especially the mega-rich. Daily News reported on the anniversary of Wichian's death on September 3rd. They noted that of all the five charges leveled at Boss in the years after the incident only one remains. The Statute of Limitations - the period of time that a case can legally be prosecuted - has run out on four. Speeding - one year stature - run out. Negligent driving causing damage - one year - run out. Not helping someone at the scene of an accident or reporting an accident - five years - run out. Abusing cocaine - run out. The fourth charge relating to cocaine would have run out this Saturday as it originally had a ten year statute. But that had already expired due to changes in the narcotics laws made last December. This meant five years was the statute so Boss could no longer face trouble for that. The only charge that remains is admittedly the most serious - reckless driving causing death that has a 15 year statute. That will run out on September 3rd 2027. Picture: Daily News Though some conspiracy theorists maintain that Boss comes back to Thailand - he really doesn't need to. But few will expect him back before 2027. Then still in the prime of life Boss will be able to resume life in Thailand should he wish. As if nothing has happened. He was 27 when he killed the cop (who was 47 at the time) - he'll be just 42 in 2027. An heir to further billions and a free man laughing at Thai justice behind the wheel of his latest supercar. Delay after delay in attempts to seek justice have resulted in a toothless Interpol Red Notice. That's not an arrest warrant. Just a notice that a suspect is wanted. The Thai authorities are not hunting the earth for the suspect. They are doing almost nothing. The RTP claim they are actively working on the case. The reality is they'd be more than happy to wait out to 2027 and move on. Media report Boss's whereabouts from time to time - he's great column inches and clicks after all. He's in London one minute, Dubai or Austria the next. Untouchable. Meanwhile back in Thailand the politicians try to save face - chief among these is now suspended PM Prayuth Chan-ocha who famously tried to save his skin over the issue by backing down to public and press pressure in 2019 when all charges were dropped by a public prosecutor. The prosecutor paid with his job and career. One of several fall guys for the appalling corruption associated with the case that reaches to the very top of the Royal Thai Police. Many policemen and politicians are thought to have been paid off. The family of the cop themselves were of course likely complicit in this too. Now the Department of Special Investigation and the Office of the National Anti-Corruption Commission have 15 people lined up for prosecution after committee after committee has met to consider what to do. In the crosshairs are: Two police generals Two police lieutenant generals Two police colonels Two police lieutenant colonels Two Air Marshals Two prosecutors One lawyer and Two politicians. No one is holding their breath that any but the lowest hanging fruit will be successfully prosecuted in the case. A case that shows the disgraceful nature of Thai justice. A case that shows how the rich walk and the poor are banged up. A case that Daily News reported has been "an epic shaking of the Thai justice system". ASEAN NOW notes that the Ministry of Justice has a vast edifice that stands on Chaeng Wattana Road. Its magnificent columns and towering facade look proud and defiant, an apparent symbol of truth and fair play. A 5-million-baht reward has been offered for information leading to two women, including a well-known YouTuber, both women in their 30’s face charges of swindling more than two billion baht from some 6000 people through an online trading scam. The woman was reportedly bashed with a motorbike helmet and fell unconscious. An injured Thai couple namely Mr. Anuchit Nijaphakdi, 22, and Ms. Wannapa Wisaijorn, 22, reached out to local media to voice their plight about a physical altercation that happened to them on Saturday, August 27th. According to Anuchit, he and his girlfriend were riding a motorbike to their condominium on Sriracha – Nong Yai Bu Road in Surasak subdistrict of Sri Racha around 8 p.m. on Saturday. The two then crossed path with two men on a bike and nearly got into a traffic accident with them, but Anuchit claimed he did not even hit their bike or did anything wrong. During Care Talk live podcast programme, Thaksin predicted that the largest coalition party headed by caretaker prime minister Prawit Wongsuwan would no longer name Prayut, who is currently stopped by court from performing his prime-ministerial duties, as head of a post-election government as they did in the 2019 election. Palang Pracharath Party might probably name Prawit’s brother/former police chief Patcharawat Wongsuwan as the party’s candidate for head of government next time, according to the former premier who has been living in self-exile in Dubai following the 2006 coup.
