  1. Every 3 months I write a personal check on my American checking account. I deposit the check in my Thai bank ( Siam City Bank).

My check clears in about 6 to 8 days at my U.S. bank ( I looked online at my account) Siam City bank then "holds" my money for a length of time before it becomes available.

It takes just about 37 days for me to have access to my money.

  2. I have the Garmin Street Pilot 2610. I have had it now for 3 years. I bought it from ESRI. I have the 10th one ever sold here in Thailand. I have learned many things about it.

Garmin has licensed ESRI to produce a 3rd party copy of Thai maps for use in Thailand. ESRI just now sent me my 3rd map upgrade Thailand City V 7.0

To install it you must copy map from the CD to a card reader.

ESRI will send you a CD free of charge if you bought from them. I ordered from their website.

I have had to use an exterior antenna because the GPS signal won’t penetrate my tinted film on the windshield as there is a small amount of metal in the film,

I have lately had to recalibrate the touch screen more often I am not sure what is causing the problem.

I have found that the auto route will not always route you the fastest way. I have on occasion taken the “scenic” route through small soi and dirt roads in upcountry villages.

I just got back from a driving trip to Danang Viet Nam via Laos. I had to reload the software with a map set from Garmin World Map as there are no others.

Has anyone figured out how to get your ESRI map up on your computer screen so you can pre plan a route, I would really want to do this???

  3. I have been told that covering your license plate with clear Plexiglas or plastic will foil the speed cameras.

I have been using a Radar detector for the last several years here in Thailand. I know, I know Thailand supposedly doesn’t have radar, BUT they do. I have found the police way, way out in the country using radar as well as on the express way. This last week I was rolling down the road at about 130 kph and my alarm went off. I immediately hit the brakes and slowed down to a 40 k.p.h. crawl. Sure enough up around the bend and another few hundred meters were the boys in brown. I had taken so long to get to the stopping area and seeing me driving at the break neck speed of 40 k.p.h. The police motioned me to keep going; they were looking for a “speeder”. For me it is only fun to beat them out of a 2 or 3 hundred baht bribe, but they do have radar

  4. I have a water fountain with about 1000 gallons of water. I have been using swimming pool chlorine with an algae control ( no fish). I also use a water filter that is made from a PVC “bucket” with a pump drawing the water from the bottom of the bucket and the interior of the bucket has plastic foam to clean the water with a plastic mesh over the top of the bucket to screen large debris. Every so often I use my power washer to spray the foam insert clean.

  5. I too had the very same problem. I finally had success shopping at Chatuchak Weekend Market in Bangkok. You will find several places that sell all sizes of lampshades as well as lamp hardware.

  6. I bought the Griffin FM broadcaster while on a visit to the U.S. I found the product to be junk. I spent $40.00 or whatever it was, for something that now sits in a drawer.

I found that for me, the very best (and cheapest) solution was the Sony tape cassette adapter. This will send your signal from the Ipod to the car stereo.

  7. When we made the move to Thailand my wife loaded HER “drill press, table saws, router table, and all “her” other shop equipment in addition to our (her) household goods.

I wanted to also bring my “her” golf cart but our shipping company thought that would be too much. I was very tempted to install a reel style lawn mower to the cart and call the package “my wife’s riding lawn mower”
