Working sorta like an Antibiotic with large spectrum?????

Snake venoms contain many different compounds, and these vary by species of snake. Some compounds affect the nervous system - neurotoxins , some kill cells - cytotoxins , which damage the liver or kidney tissue as the body attempts to metabolise and excrete the toxin, and some others are haemotoxins - which can affect  blood cells, stop blood clotting or affect blood pressure regulation.

It is nasty stuff!  In South Eastern Australia, where I came from, almost all of our local snakes were venomous.

  2. You have to know exactly which species of snake bit the patient - and administer the correct antivenene.

Every snake has different venim, so how does that work????

In South Eastern  Australia our main snakes were Tigers,Black & Brown Snakes.

A multitalented antivenene will cover all 3 , Tiger snake antivenene covers Tiger & Black snakes.

Brown snake antivenene treats Eastern Brown snake only.

A vial of antivenene contains enough anti venom to inactivate one average snake bite - so if the patient is bitten multiple times, then multiple vials must be given. It is not simple cause & effect stuff!

I would imagine that the local Cobra antivenene would be most useful here, but I would have no idea if it protects against the different types of Cobras, & not much use against vipers etc.

  3. OP - as others have said here - acute death like this could most likely be attributed to cardiovascular issues - ‘heart attack’ or aneurysm . Snake bite could cause rapid death if the dog is bitten around the muzzle or mouth, as an overwhelming volume of venom can be absorbed quickly. I have seen this multiple times in my practice in Australia.

I can think of no poison that will cause such rapid death. Organophosphates , carbamates, rodenticides, strychnine and 1080 will cause death - but never this quickly.  You would not expect clinical signs for at least 30 minutes after ingestion - and death would be more drawn out.

Cobras are a fact of life.  In our household the score is
    Dogs - 2
    Cobras - 0

That could change.  Now that you've brought it up, my youngest male is at the vet having his cajones chopped off.  I'll have to ask the vet if they have any cobra anti-venom for dogs as it's a 35 minute trip to the vet if I'm breaking the speed limit.  Anti-venom would be a good addition to activated charcoal.

The anti venom must be administered slowly intravenously , after the patient is premedicated  with steroid, antihistamine & adrenaline - so I would suggest you just drive to vet faster!

  5. Could be intervertebral disc compression, could be facet joint problem, could be just soft tissue - but more likely to be spine or joint issue.

If you have not had issues in the past , initially apply cool for 30 minutes or so , and when pain subsides alternate with heat...  The cool reduces the inflammation - (= pain) and the heat increases circulation to area to improve healing - but heat is not so important when the injury is so acute.  If you are in pain , take some sort of pain reliever - panadol / voltaren etc - you get no medals for coping with pain!

When my back is sore - I have a lower lumbar facet joint instability - I find lying on my side is more comfortable than laying on my back . Massage & stretching can help as well. (NOT that kind of massage! - but hopefully your happy ending is pain relief).

It is always the transition from sitting/lying to standing that is most painful.

Whatever you do - it will take about a week to come back to normal.

    Enjoy!

  6. WISE transfers from Australia to Thailand generally take 24hrs, although my last transfer last week ($20k) only took 3 hrs - a record!

Transfers initiated on a Friday can take 3 days to appear in my Thai bank account - WISE cites Australian banking opening hours as the cause of this.

I have always received the amount quoted by WISE when I set up my transfer.

I have had no problems with their services.

OK folks, thanks for all the replies.

i don't think that my dog has anything seriously wrong to be honest as he is still very lively - just not eating much and will go a couple of days with eating virtually nothing.  Maybe it is just the heat - certainly saps my appetite.  We do keep him trimmed to a reasonable length of coat.  One time, we took him to a 'professional' groomer who proceeded to shave him down to the skin and even removed his whiskers.  I was furious and the dog was traumatized!  Never again!

I have no issues with our current vet - he has looked after our dog since he was a puppy and has administered all the shots, etc.  The dog has had a blood test and that showed nothing abnormal.

Food that we have tried (various flavours)

    Pedigree wet food (in sachets)

Smart Heart wet food (in sachets)

Cesar (in a sort of sachet)

Pedigree dry food - for small breeds

Royal Canin dry food - for small breeds

The dry food is always available - can be left out.  He sometimes eats a little but is clearly not keen.

JerHigh snack sticks - various flavours.  Supposed to be as rewards only but, as he will eat these when he won't touch other stuff he's maybe getting rather too many.

I have not seen any JerHigh wet food around.  Our local Royal Canin shop has a vast variety of stuff - I'll take a better look.

Pomeranians can be notoriously fussy eaters , as can many of the smaller spoilt pocket breeds.

In my opinion many people expect their dogs to eat a lot more than they need.

If his activity level & behaviour has not really changed, he just seems to be eating a bit less, I would not be too concerned. If he is not losing weight then we can assume his calorific requirements are being met.

Some dogs enjoy the extra attention they receive from worried owners about their perceived low food intake - so this can become learned behaviour.

It is interesting to read other pet owners advice here. Some of it is scary, some just plain wrong!

Worried pet owners are the reason I could retire early to Thailand. So many owners are begging for ways to be parted from their cash to ensure that their Fur Baby is getting the best possible treatment.

If your dog is behaving normally, just eating less - by all means monitor the situation, make sure he has no dental issues, & don’t stress too much.

My dogs will do nearly anything for those JerHigh treats - we call it dog Crack!

G Rex. Can you share how you watch AFL using your VPN?

I have Surfshark, but I've always had to pay for an AFL monthly or yearly subscription to watch it live here.

And that's only "permitted" if you are outside of Australia.

Any info or guidance would be greatly appreciated !

I have a Kayo subscription - needed an Australian mobile phone number for set up - so used a number from my work - you needs to be able to get registration code from this phone. $25 per month. Can watch any game I want - live or delayed.  Also has plenty of other sport to watch. I log in with one of the Australian numbers on Bullet VPN - they have 6 ( Kayo 1 to Kayo 6) . Sometimes all of these will connect, other times you need to try a few first , as Kayo sometimes detects VPN , so will not connect.

The transmission is a bit laggy at times - but - as a Collingwood supporter I am not too fussed about the footy ATM!

  9. I use VPN to stream AFL games (Aussie Rules Football) from an Australian provider.  Express was no good to me - the provider could detect VPN , so was blocked.  Bullet VPN works well. They change their IP addresses regularly to thwart the blockers (from Kayo website). I think it is a bit of a cat & mouse game.

  10. The Gentian Violet is an astringent, and has antibacterial affect. It will help to dry the irritated areas, but will unlikely cure the problem. As mentioned by Kickstart , arthropod vectors are the most likely cause of the skin problems - so ideally treatment aimed at preventing these before the damage is done is the way to go.

Nexgard and Bravecto are the best treatments currently, and ivermectin works as well - but this info is probably of no use to you for treating Soi dogs!
