Oklahoma officials accused of talk of killing journalists
herfiehandbag replied to onthedarkside's topic in World News
Three of the four, the Sheriff, the Sheriff's Captain and the guy in charge of the local jail, worked in "law enforcement". I listened to the recording. It was perhaps a little bit more than chit chat in jest. -
Are there any 'normal' farangs living in Thailand?
herfiehandbag replied to bob smith's topic in ASEAN NOW Community Pub
I suppose the ideal is a bar with a garden attached. My favoured watering hole has lots of plants... -
Prayut: Conscripted soldiers can benefit from opportunities

Mind you, he was a "Green Jacket" so will have made full use of contacts to get to the top - they're not known as the "Black Mafia" for nothing! -
Suggestions for a "Cheap Charlie" Smart Phone
herfiehandbag replied to connda's topic in Mobile Devices and Apps
Mobile phones threads are, like driving threads and several other topics, places where everyone is always right! However..., I have a Realme C3, had it for two years now, cheap as chips to buy, runs Android 10... -
The classic story in the UK was the soldier recently returned from "Op Banner" (deployment in Northern Ireland) who dived for cover when a passing car backfired. Never happened to me but I know of others who have done it. I do remember being a passenger in a friends car having recently returned, we were driving down the M3, he saw a couple of farmers in a field with shotguns, and took off like a bat out of hell. I didn't know a Triumph Herald (it was a long time ago) could go that fast!

Oh jolly good, a "bumgun debate". We haven't had one for a while now!

At times I wonder, having moved to live here, if I am living in the middle of it!

Presumably the AK is just in case the mangoes turn on you?

I used to have a pal in the UK who was into "Ham radio". In some ways it was fascinating. What used to amuse me was, having made contact with a new "call sign" over the airwaves, he would send him a postcard by mail. I never really understood that bit...

No. PTSD takes people many different ways. Different people have different triggers. I live a couple of kilometres from a small arms range (Royal Thai Police). Sometimes I find it disturbing, not so much pistols but when they are using rifles. Very occasionally they have night shoots. I served in Northern Ireland, Bosnia and Iraq. Nothing exceptional ( very "ordinary forces" me) but the odd occasion when the backside was going "sixpence, half a crown, sixpence, half a crown". I don't have PTSD, but I do sometimes have very vivid dreams - some might say nightmares. As I said it takes different people different ways. Heat, crowds, shouting and waving guns may have initially been fun, but it could also have been a trigger. Be thankful you are not affected.

Pheu Thai party’s Paetongtarn top PM candidate in latest NIDA poll
herfiehandbag replied to webfact's topic in Thailand News
Given the horror inspired by the election of a woman in 2011, I shudder to think how it will impact the establishment dinosaurs if the people elect a pregnant one! -
The re-organisation of the Bangkok garrison is part of the creation of a relatively small, but well equipped "Praetorian Guard" to protect, guard and perhaps project power for one particular entity. They would, I suspect, be able to preserve a strong grip on Central Bangkok, probably clear and maintain a corridor to an airport; the question is for how long. Outside of Bangkok, and in particular North and Northeast the police will simply melt away and I doubt the Army even has the resources or logistics to manoeuvre more than a few kilometres beyond their barracks.

Even they, deep down acknowledge that they (thoughts and prayers) are mere hypothetical platitudes. It is a price they are prepared to pay to indulge their delusions. And frankly you can't get much more deluded than naming a brand of semi-automatic rifle, a weapon simply designed to kill as many people as possible as quickly as possible, the beloved "National Gun of the United States of America". It has been used to blow the heads off children in school for crying out loud! In fact, given recent events naming it as such is more than deluded, it is morbidly sick.

Lula sworn in as Brazil president as Bolsonaro flies to US
herfiehandbag replied to Scott's topic in World News
There is of course the outside possibility that China's "success" in putting together an anti - American coalition in the " global south" is due as much to the fact that a large number of countries (particularly in South and Central America) are fed up with American "power projection" and general interference. Isn't there even discussions on the fringes of US politics, during the initial stages of a presidential election campaign, of the the idea of military action (which would, this being the US, inevitably involve bombing civilian populations) against drug cartels in Mexico? Whatever the Spanish American is for " oh dear, here we go again"! The US utterly destroyed it's credibility in much of Latin America by it's support of neo fascist regimes over the last 50 years. This is possibly the result. -
18,000 cows killed in Texas dairy farm explosion
herfiehandbag replied to Social Media's topic in World News
I don't suppose for one minute that those cows had ever felt grass underfoot or the sun on their backs.
