seems to me that someone is listening, Thailand needs highly skilled foreigners, the realisation of that fact is a first for Thailand and almost a public declaration that they do not have the people in house to perform certain tasks and manage certain projects, it could be to facilitate people involved in the construction of the high speed rail network and possibly many other tasks that Thailand does not have the ability to do themselves, they may also be looking closely at other countries such as the UK who rely on foreign workers to fill professional gaps that cannot be filled by UK nationals

On the face of it - another great idea that might attract much needed expertise in many areas that are severely lacking.

I agree with what you mean, however...trying to get a local to do anything that resembles what should be done, is nigh on impossible.

I worked sporadically for several years on RTA, RTAF & RTMC maintenance contracts. All the contracts were thru a BKK company/agent & he gave me 3 "mechanics". I was the Project Manager. I wanted to fire one worthless lout so bad! Couldn't fire him though, because then his brother would quit.

Just watching the hodge-podge way  they approached work made all my hair turn grey.

I resigned myself to watching Youtube all day & just checking on them once an hour or so.

another in a series of new laws that are predictable with ultra conservative govts; and the really fun part is no-end-in-sight

I got "invited" (mandatory "fun") to an RTA Colonel's promotion/change of command in Pathum Thani once.

I had loads of work to do, but everybody there was encouraged to attend, otherwise the big cheese would lose face.

Not too bad, with coyote dancers and Johnny Walker flowing freely, but the music! WAAAAAY too loud!

If you ever attend an Army party, trust me, you'll be swimming in booze & women.

"This test showed a steady decline in water quality in the sea in Pattaya. In laymen's terms the sea cannot clean itself due to the rubbish flowing into it."

You can't clean shit with shit, otherwise you just get more shit!  Do you think that explanation might be too technical for the high-level-meeting attendees?

Answer is to smile real big, and say it's a misunderstanding...And the problem continues.

City was told some 10 yrs ago to improve sewage treatment plants but just like everything else here in Thailand nothing gets done, as always the talk followed by more talks and then the topic disappears from the headlines and, issue is solved

    Article from 3 years ago....http://www.pattayamail.com/news/2-years-late-2nd-wastewater-treatment-plant-expected-to-finish-in-august-37768

It's complete, total utter not caring about anything but their mia noi's & Mercedes by city officials.

A perfect example is the tunnel project- way overpriced. A flyover would have cost a third of the tunnel price and be finished in 6 months.

    Amen.

I worked in Pathum Thani for about a year & they were building an overpass/flyover right near my apartment.

I didn't time it, but they'd just started it when I got there.

It was functional long before I was finished up there.

I recall about 15 years ago they dug up Pattaya Klang. They were resurfacing the road,

I went to buy a clothes washing machine & had to leap over a 2 meter deep ditch.

They filled it all in, the concrete had barely cured & they were out there with jackhammers and tunneling machines to install water pipes.

I guess they "No hab budget" when they had the entire thing dug down 6+ feet deep?

why stop here? Thailand has a long coast line and a big military. should be 24/7.

Certainly has enough Generals & Admirals to lead the "squads" 24/7.

They should have a General out there with a company doing Drill & Ceremony marches up & down Pattaya beach all night, every night.

They could incorporate "Halt! Bend over! Pick up trash!...Forward, March!" into it.

Put ratshot ammo in their M-16's & take care of the varmint problem too.

Make them do it in full combat gear as well (Helmet, flack jacket, 5 liters of water etc)....about 60-80 lbs.

Nah PT (physical training) uniforms is what they have.

Probably future submariners waiting on their sub's.

Rear Adm. Eagarat Promlumpag, commander of the Air and Coastal Defense Command, led the squad to the Sattahip shoreline Aug. 8 to pick up trash scattered over a kilometer of sand.

Now we know why the Thai military has so many flag officers.

Apparently it takes one to lead a squad....It's a big squad though. Looks more like a platoon.

To keep the beach tidy, vendors will be barred from putting out chairs until requested by a customer.

I like that part. Makes sense (for once). Only reason to even stop there is to have a drink in the shade or a massage. The "water" (sludge/sewage) is to be avoided at all costs.

Ko Larn used to be nice before the gov't got involved in "improving" it.

I do have to say living in Thailand and sometimes going into bars and trying to guess who just got out of prison or who is a child molester can be a entertaining way to spend an afternoon.

Reminds me of a few bars I used to frequent 30 years ago in Florida.

Saw some clown I'd just met at The Longhorn Tavern on the America's Most Wanted TV show once...Child molester. I called him in. Never saw him again, but he was not featured on the next week's show, so I guess they got him.

You forgot to mention watching for all the ex Special Forces/Navy Seals. Can be mildly entertaining as well.

Watching your buddy get dragged out of a bar by his ear, by his wife, for groping a really ugly bargirl (she drove by & spotted him), is beyond entertaining though.

With the exception of Soi Six, Pattaya.

and I hate to say this, but being a retired upper middle class American the biggest shock coming to Thailand was seeing all the very low class people from all over the world wandering around. Most high end tourist would be put off by this.

    Thanks! LOL :partytime2:

Yeah, you see some true wacko's in BKK and Pattaya.

They range from old hippies to young hippies.....Or skinhead Brits.

I saw a guy who had a Robert Plant/David Lee Roth hairdo on Sukh near Asoke once with a gold alarm clock on a big chain around his neck, replete with cowboy boots and shorts.

Soi Six has its own share of weird willy's. Most of them are Thai men trying to act like women.

Interesting- Thailand is purchasing a new ship and Thaigeezers are amazed that they may actually want to arm it with modern weapons!

I would suggest  that something has been lost in translation- these are not 'new weapons' but would have been budgeted for at the time of the ship purchase.

I honestly doubt that. I've been in the military contracting game, in Thailand for 8 years. Even US contracting is last minute, knee jerk reactions to some committee somewhere.

I've never understood the physical abuse approach. Why has it ever been okay for big heavy adults to hit little defenseless kids in the name of discipline? This has been the norm for most countries until more recent times.

Here's my gripe: If someone hits the big heavy adult for doing something wrong, they go crying to the cops? And let's face it; adults usually deserve a bigger slap for their wrongdoings than little people.

If the adult knew how to discipline properly, they wouldn't need to resort to physical attacks.

    Stubby

My Mom used to whup me and my brother once a week, whether we needed it or not. Vicious beatings with a switch.

I've reared two kids & my brothers 5 kids.

We NEVER EVER beat them. All but my youngest is grown now & married, but, guess what? Horror of horrors! They were and are loving, sweet kids.

I and all my brothers keep Mom at a distance, just because we never forget the beatings.

All beating a kid does is generate hatred, resentment, and a desire to get away from the beater.

The person doing the beating needs to be beat....Unless you are beating a surly bartender.
