    I had a friend who determined they had no taxable income, and thus didn't file their taxes. The IRS found them, audited them, they went to tax court, and were sentenced to 7 years in Federal prison.

    You are very misinformed about conditions in the USA for legal immigrants. But yes, they have the right to pay Social Security tax.

    Only if there is a tax treaty with your home country. And the tax rates in your home country are higher than Thailand's. And you don't mind mind completing a Thai return.

    Except in your scenario of the Revenue Department catching me for an audit, then wenshienshang could be caught and then he would have no tax return to show the auditors. This is a common situation worldwide, people who don't think they owe don't file. But if they do owe, when they are audited, they are dead meat. It's always better to file, since it reduces risks.

    The flaw in the logic is the requirement to maintain a very large amount of cash in a Thai bank (or safe), or hand it to a Thai wife.

    Yes, that's why it's called "income tax". The problem with your post is that you are focused on the Thai government, whereas if I have to fill out a Thai tax return, I don't care about the Revenue Department's struggle to collect my money.

    Filing means lot of people are going to have to pay a lot of tax. Or worse, the Thai tax forms may not support the tax treaties, so filling a tax return may end up costing significant money for many people.

    Technically, if you are transferring money into Thailand, you are liable to providing a tax return, if only to prove you don't owe anything. The question is whether this will be enforced. Same as motorcycle helmets.

    The point is for people to listen to others to help them make a determination how to prepare for Taxarmageddon. Or do nothing at all. I got out of Dodge, and will stay out of Thailand for 181 days in 2024. Mexico is nice this time of year.

    I paid Estimated taxes for my 2024 return in July 2023. Certainly, tax liability for US income can be determined early enough to complete Thai tax forms, if it comes to that. But this is getting into the weeds. I am sure there would Extension of Time forms in the Thai tax world.

    Lots of Thais don't pay taxes. They also don't transfer cash into Thailand from other countries.

    There are 2 credible outcomes here: The new rules are forgotten, since it would take a lot of effort to accommodate retirees. Or A handful of retirees are audited, and some are sent to the monkey house, as a means of encouraging compliance.
