Many members here have reported that WHT being deducted suddenly after many years, without reaching the 20k limit. See @WorriedNoodle post I strongly suspect @skatewash educated guess.

Did you ask them, why suddenly the tax is being deducted?

This is the order from The R.D. According to the Director-General notification regarding income tax (No.346) Subject : Determination of rules, procedures and conditions for tax exemption from personal income tax on interest income received from saving deposit accounts which shall be effective from 4 April 2019 onward provides conditions as follows: The total amount of interest income incurred from all saving deposit accounts with all banks received by depositor must not exceed 20,000 baht throughout the tax year. The deposit account name and the tax identification number used to open a saving deposit account must belong to those who are responsible for personal income tax (the depositors must provide tax identification number to the Bank). The depositor must allow the Bank to submit any information regarding the interest income incurred from saving deposit account to the Revenue Department. If the depositors do not want the Bank to submit such information to the Revenue Department, the depositor must inform the Bank in the form as prescribed by the Bank and the Bank shall deduct withholding tax at the rate of 15% on the interest income received from all saving deposit accounts paid by the Bank even if the total interest income earned does not exceed 20,000 baht throughout the tax year.

I suspect you may be correct but I just updated my 3 yr olds K bank passbook(Half Thai) Guess what , no tax withheld on the interest. I don't know when he applied for a tax id at the revenue???? All this is pure discrimination, nothing else

Peter, The branch refunded all my tax not the revenue department, coz I don't want it to be withheld in the first place.

On @gamb00ler advice, i went to my branch today(Bkk) They instantly refunded all my tax and put my tax id on their records. They let my wife see the computer screen with my tax id reflecting in their software as evidence. I called their customer care to double check and it was confirmed by the phone officer as well.

Thanks a ton for your advice. Finally I could stop the Witholding tax from my SCB EZ A/c ( Bangkok) They refunded my deducted tax on the spot too. The customer care officer also confirmed this.

Update- The requirement to get 'No criminal record' certificate from your embassy, has been done away with by the SB Police.

The interest rates have reduced from Jul 2022, 1.1% upto 100,000 thb and 0.9 % from 100k to 2 mill thb However, you can withdraw only twice a month otherwise you are charged a penalty of 50 baht a trx.

Bkk Bank is such a lousy bank. Ring their call center and try speaking to an Officer, Good Luck.

Original Bank seal/ stamp is required by immigration on the statement.

Yes, Thailand is not a member of Hague Convention, so apostilles are not accepted here.

In Chaengwattana, you can renew legally, 45 days before your current extension expires. I suggest you renew before leaving, if possible.
