As you say test the water before launching into anything. I was set up to put in gravel---sand---charcoal----softener. The tests however, show the water to be clear, clean and only hardness is a problem. So I have binned the gravel---sand---charcoal for a smaller, cheaper 'Big Blue' pleated filter, but kept the water softener.
