Last night went to walk around that area and it was scary.... NO sidewalks on Pharatamnak to go to check out my old favorite FX Hotel (now run down - hard to believe since it's own by Japanese company) , then down on # 4 to check out Asia Pattaya Hotel (was very nice but so remote...), then scary totally dark nameless Jungle alley (few drunks and dogs) to # 5. Sands area is nice and clean, lot of people but on the beach many locals who don't like farangs... I wish my needs and taste would be as simple as video guys ???? A few 7/11s, massage and bars.

I booked for 9 days 800 THB/nite. That's more than booking etc show but they didn't have rooms. By walking in and talking I got the room (this tactic works on many others too - cash talks...). The place is OK. A little worn out, breakfast hit 'n miss, personnel not very friendly (I think it's shyness?), pool very small and certain nationals loud... But the main things are good; Great location! Good food every where within walking distance etc. Quiet room (no balcony) and I felt safe. Good check who comes in and goes. A good place to start to look better or stay.

Yes. Algarve area is very popular among expats. Madeira is good too. But I want to learn to speak Spanish. More useful to me since I like Mexico, Central and South America as well.

I'm currently on Gran Canaria and it's been in heaven - for a price. Mid level hotels are $ 90-100/night w/o breakfast. I spend $ 3300/m w meals (I cook myself every day). For same money I was 3-4 days in better hotel in Thailand and a week in Vietnam's Phu Quoc beach bungalow. Hard to decide. Thailand is way more friendly and more colorful. Food is better too. Spain is way more safe. The traffic is good and Islands have one of the best communal bus systems in the Europe, for cheap too. No need for car.
