When i was young many many people used pot / weed, it was not open. I doubt people smoking pot in your town was rare, i doubt it very much, you were just unaware. Was it considered normal to drive home after drinking you beers, is it ok to drink beers coz it's legal? check the stats to see which one is worse for society. Thai passports are quick coz not many of them travel internationally ( compared to many wester countries, like Oz ), so it makes total sense for them to be much quicker.

Well, not really. A massive advantage of going early is you have time to react if some paperwork is incorrect ( unknown changes to requirements as an example ). If you were to rock up at 1030 and were missing something it would require an extra night in SKT if you were not to make it back before 1100.
