i got bored of cm and moved and started traveling. i ended up living mostly in vietnam, cambodia and bangkok. in pattaya now. i liked chiang mai for over 5 years, but in the end there was just not anything new to do. i was just sitting there, had a great villa with a garden and koi pond, but i was going out to the same places each time. i started thinking is this it, what now? unless i started a family or got married, which i never met someone to go that route with, i could not see a bright future there building an evolving life. it felt like i was waiting for something that never arrived and just kept getting pushed into the future...

i guess the question is are they still there enjoying the promenade or did they move away 🤣

smiths residence near chiang mai gate has weekly i think if you're not into guesthouses and want something a bit more comfortable.

do you really care about an extra 7k baht a month for a much better condo? that's only about $200!

depends on how far you can walk. how old are you to retire? i lived in the haiya area just off chiang mai gate in the silverware district. loved it. quiet but walking distance to moat and old city. baht bus also runs around there. another good area is up by the ping river close to the old city, all along it pretty much up and down.

my neighbor was one and i always thought he wanted to pump it everytime he said anything 🤷🏻‍♂️ of course, he was never so forthcoming

i was talking to another foreigner at the restaurant. everything i said he said he was there also. for example, i said i grew up in so and so city and he said he lived there as well. then i mentioned where i went to college in another far away area and he said he used to walk around the campus there. does that sound like bs? why would someone make that up?

i tried to take out rent all at once at a cambodian atm. the $100 bills were ok since it was for rent. the atm did not dispense the money, gave the card back and a message said 'out of order'. i checked and the money was deducted from my bank account. i talked to the bank manager, saying maybe the money was stuck in the atm slot 🤣. they did a bank to bank investigation with my bank in the usa, even called them on the phone, but my money was never refunded. i think what happened is the atm ran out of money and shut down but had already sent the message that the bills were dispensed 🤷🏻‍♂️

another problem with cambodia is that i had to keep taking out $90 each time and paying the atm fee. any withdraw over $100 and you get a $100 bill which hardly anybody can break and your risking getting one with a tear or ink mark and nobody will accept it. if you break a $100 they dit there examining the bill for the slightest inperfection.

it's worse in cambodia. in thailand you drink your boredom away, in cambodia you drink your life away.

well, these places are not that great. it's one of the poorest countries around. still, i'd rather be in cambodia then stuck in india or places in africa like nigeria.

cambodia can get real nasty if your stuck there forever. one of the things that kept me sane there was knowing i could leave if i wanted to. a lot of the expats there just end up drinking in bars and eating those simpleton meals they serve for foreigners.

Easy for me to move, I don't have property or family here. My only worry would be getting some sort of jail time or being prevented from leaving the country.

i'm just going to ignore this and get the o-a visa every two years and withdraw from my home country bank via the atm. if i get hit with a no filing fee or entry is refused i will decide what to do at that point in time, or just move to siem reap.

unfortunately, it's not limited to driving.
