  2. I will be going on holidays to Ireland at the end of the month.

I am actually really looking forward to it.

This will be the my son's first trip to there, and it will also be my wife's; despite the fact that we have been together four years.

I have lived outside my country of birth for most of my life, but I enjoy my trips home.

I am not very nationalistic, but still home is home.

I can't wait for my family back there to meet my wife and son.

Do other ex-pats enjoy these trips?

How often do you take them?

The last 10 years minimum twice a year for medical reasons.

Good to see old friends, (no more family) eat dishes that I remember fondly, drink some good beers and wine at reasonable prices, but after one week it's enough and I'm on my way back.

Wouldn't want to miss these trips though, good reality checks.

Enjoy your trip and I hope your wife likes it. Mine is hasip/hasip.

    Cheers

  3. Last year in November I parked at the Long Term Parking Area at Suvarnabhumi Airport. I was pleased to find it was free at that stage last year. I was also pleased to find my car as I had left it when I returned to Thailand. There was a free shuttle bus to and from the terminals.

Does anyone know what the story is now please?

I don't know about the long term parking, but here's a link to the official Suvarnabhumi page about

    parking.

Covered parking directly opposite from the terminal is 250 Baht/day for a maximum of 24 days.

  6. 'Just stopped by. New website:

    http://www.bussarakamhotel (dot) com

In a non-descript area near the non-aircon bus station... wifi but not free. pick-up from the airport 70 baht transfer fee... seems to be very popular with Thai businessmen: large parking garage.

In terms of nice location, the Bantoom Gardens on the lake (Bung Kaen Nakhon) would work but either you have your own transport or lots of song thaew / tuk-tuk. 'will try to get there in the next day or so...

    Hi Jazzbo,

Thanks for the info. I have my own transport so distance and location is not so important.

What's important to me is comfort, cleanliness and a nice breakfast buffet. I guess I can always go to the sofitel for breakfast but that's about 1000 Baht for two, a bit steep.

Thanks again for the info I'll probably give it a try next month.

    cheers

  7. Since last time I stayed in Khon Kaen, Sofitel have doubled their prices.

Am now looking at Bussarakam Hotel, supposed to be fairly new but can't find any reviews on this hotel.

Anybody stayed there or info from locals.

Do NOT want to stay at Kosa and/or Charoen Thani Princess.

    thanks beforehand

  8. What's the driving time (on average) to get from Central Pattaya area to the car ferry (near Trat), to Koh Chang please? Are there any more frustrating road works?

    Advice appreciated. :D

It all depends whether you're lucky with the traffic lights or not,

    I estimate about 25 of them :o

    cheers

  9. Does anyone else feel the same...is there some great online agency that I am unaware of that is truly cheaper than direct bookings?

    Not that I know off.

However it is my experience that if you shop around sometimes it is possible to save a fair amount.

It all depends how thorough you search and how much time you want to spend searching.

    cheers

  12. Can anybody give me a convincing reason to stay, or shall I take the advice that if I don't like it, I can just leave?

    Dear PeaceBlondie,

Nobody except you yourself can answer this question.

Fact is, when you're homesick, be it for loved ones, places, food and/or other things, you start to idolize the things that you're missing.

Don't forget that the time you have spent here has changed you, and so have the persons, things that you've left behind.

Also there's always the question, will my partner be happy where I want to go and stay.

Take a leave and open your eyes and take a good look at the things you're missing.

    Works for me EVERYTIME !

    Good luck

  13. OK, now I am confused. Assuming I own my condo and don't have a landlord that reports:

Say I have to report April 1. But instead of reporting, I go to Singapore on March 15 and arrive back April 15. So I don't report on April 1, but instead report 90 days after April 15. Is this in compliance, or as an owner, do I have to report to local immigration April 15?

    Hi Jingthing,

You should present yourself at the local immigration office within 24 hrs (or next working day).

You'll get the new leaflet - Receipt of Notification - with the new date that you have to report again (90 days)

Seems the local offices are NOT informed by their border brothers in uniform.

I've done it once now and nobody frowned although it was a different officer than the one who told me.

Mind you, I don't know if they enforce this rule in Pattaya, can only relate my personal experience.

    cheers

    onzestan

  14. imho the rule is as follows.

Each foreigner staying long tome in Thailand has to report every 90 days to confirm place of residence.

This is controlled through the TM-card.

When someone leaves the country, that TM-card is annulled and on return you get a new one.

This new TM-card is now the basis for the 90 day rule and must be presented locally at the place of residence, within 24 Hrs of arrival to start the new period.

My friendly immigration-officer in Pattaya told me that I could get into trouble by not complying, although he admitted that up to then this rule has not been enforced he said it might be in the future.

That was 5 months ago, since then I comply.

    My 2 cents

    onzestan

    Stan, your confusing me. ]

You say you must present you TM card at your place of residence. Then who reports you to immigration - you or the house owner? Or are they one and the same?

Sorry Mobi, sometimes I confuse myself :o

What I meant was : at the immigration office of place of residence.

    Hope to have clarified.

    Cheers

  15. Lanta Island Resort & Relax Bay Resort

Would like to know which others would recommend more and why if possible Pulezz! :D

Big bonus for me if either resorts have friendly animals running around (cats, dogs, anything!) as im missing cuddly contact.

Desperately aching to see the beach and as my health isnt too good at this moment I just wish for a peaceful time (not be bothered too much by overly-helpful staff or be side-by-side to other guests if possible. I can live with it of course lol..but prefer when people dont fuss around too much.).

Wont be working so wifi isnt an issue, but would like to access internet to keep a check on various things and email. So, if either has net that would be good to know (however i can just email them to find out, but its helpful to get others unbiased opinions on these things).

    Ty ty. :o

    Hi Eek,

Never stayed in any of both resorts, however one night me and some friends went to Relax Bay resort for dinner, as we were informed that the chef was French.

Was not impressed, not the food, surroundings or staff. Mind you this was off season and we (6 of us) were the only customers.

    Cheers

    Hope to have helped :D

  17. I've seen sour cream in Villa's BKK and some other supermarkets (can't remember which ones) its in a carton similar to youghurt with a yellow label, usually alongside cottage cream.

    Hope this helps.

    Cheers

    DIY basic sour cream.

Mix 1 cup cream with 1/4 cup buttermilk. Put in screw-top jar, close and store at room temperature (in Thailand bottom of the fridge) for minimum 24 hrs.

    Season to taste.

    cheers
