  1. We would like to visit a not to touristy location and stay for a month or two. Its just me and my 8 year old daughter so I have to make sure she is safe and accomidated. Im thinking of a town in the north east part of the country. Any suggestions?

Try Khon Kaen or Oudon Thani.

Fairly rural but with some supermarkets for your daily needs.

    cheers

  2. Anyone know what music Villa Supermarket keep playing. It seems to be easy listenening cover versions but is pretty chilled out? Thery play it at the Thong Lor Shop, and then I heard it again a couple of days ago on Sukumvit.

Not really my thing but is a nice lazy morning batch of tunes.

    Cheers

Ask the person in charge, should be able to help you.

  3. You know what I miss about Southern California (besides the fact that it doesn’t rain there)? I miss Charles Shaw wine from Trader Joe’s.

A decent bottle of wine for $2. That’s works out to abut 70 baht, or a case of wine for around 800 baht. I bet some of you pay that for one bottle of equivalent wine here.

I’ve tried beer with dinner, but to me, beer goes with a hot dog and a baseball game; I just don’t enjoy it with the evening meal.

Is this a business opportunity, or is it another government conspiracy?

    Import taxes abt 300 % :D:o

  4. A car has been arranged to meet me on arrival at Suvanabhumi.

Where do I go to meet the car ?

It's not self-drive,driver will meet me,where do he display his sign ?

    :o Wiley Coyote

    There are 2 exits. B or C.

Ask your travelagent (airline) what luggage belt they use and what is the nearest exit, and make your appointment there.

    Hope to have helped. :D

  5. I believe it's not only a question of would I? but also how important comfort is to the individual traveller.

It is my understanding that elderly passengers are much more interested in making a trip as pleasant as possible, i.e.

flying a reputed company to avoid as many hassles as possible, not to mention flying business or 1st class.

For younger people the price is more important and sitting for 2-3 hours in cramped conditions is not such a big deal as for elderly.

I like my creature comforts and therefore I do not fly budget but can understand that for others the price is the deciding factor.

  6. Hi,

I was just wondering what sort of weather I could expect last week of Oct and first week of Nov? Is it peak season there then?

What sort of place would I get for around THB 1000 per night? Can anyone recommend anywhere decent that has use of a pool?

    Many thanks

    High season starts 1st november.

Peak season is mid december till mid january.

Decent hotel would be the verandah with use of pool next door Peace Laguna Resort. (same owners)

Best price for the Verandah is at www.directrooms.com

    Till 31.10 : Baht 740,- as from 1.11 Baht 1620,

    cheers

  7. Sadly you'll be dead before that happens Tammi!!! :D Anyways back to the subject at hand, befriend a few baht buses or mototaxi drivers. Get their mobile numbers. They can arrange most of your needs if the truth be told, call it a booking service of sorts. :o

Yes, I did use baht bus 500 for a while - a very nice, helpful chap. But he wasn't available all the time and no a/c.

JaiDee - sorry, I didn't see your post until just now. Actually, what I wanted to know when I started this post is what is this baht bust co-operative? How come there are so many baht buses? How come there are so many complaints about them? Why do they run only on some routes? Why is there no regular service on, say, Tepparasit and Sukhumvit? Why are they allowed to charge so much for 'off route'? Why can't we get a regulated, metered, a/c, taxi service!????????

Probably because some people at city hall don't want to lose some of their regular income.

  8. I have a question for those who've been in Thailand for a while - do you start using Thai interjections instead of you own language?

I find myself saying, 'oiee' instead of 'ouch' or 'ai ya'.

Watching football I say 'oh hooooooooo' in many different tones.

    'heuh' when relieved.

Also putting 'wa', 'woi', 'na', 'see','la', 'sa noi' etc into English sentences.

It need a old buddy of mine to say, 'what the **** are you saying' before I realised.

Off course, even when I speak Thai

  9. Hi,

I have been asked for suggestions on the best hotel in Krabi. I live in Chonburi - never been there! These folks are wealthy - price will not be a problem. Recommendations appreciated

    Peter

    Quite a few :

    Ayodhaya Suite Resort & Spa

    Centara Grand Beach

    Rayavadee

    Sheraton

    Sofitel Phokeethra

Of which I would prefer Centara for its private beach and fantastic view (Villa's).

    For reviews check www.tripadvisor.com

  10. Have used Etihad couple of times in Business class.

    Excellent.

Only gripe is that their ground staff in AUH is not on a par with their flight crews.

    Unfriendly and not very professional.

Also had some rescheduling done but nothing to complain about. Prefer 2 hours stopover to under 1 hour.

Also I'm a smoker and Abu Dhabi is the only smoker friendly airport that I know.

    cheers

  11. We will be in Pattaya for Chritmas & New Year. Was wondering could anyone suggest a decent place to go for Chritmas dinner, will be with my wife and fourteen year old son. Also I'll be making a lot of calls back home so any suggestions where to get a Thai sim card and what network to go with.

    Thanks in advance

    Stan

    Hi Stan,

Most hotels have special venues for this occasion. Some even oblige you to participate (financially).

As for SIM cards I find One Two Call to give the best service, available at any shop selling handy's.

    Cheers

  12. There is something called the Marhaba Lounge which, I believe, is available to any passenger on payment of about GBP10 (haven't got the conversion to Dhiram to hand). Hoping to use it myself in a couple of weeks when I have an 8-hour layover on the way back to BKK.

The airport hotel is accessible from airside so you don't have to pass through immigration to use it. Only problem is the cost - I was quoted GBP140 for a double room for 4 hours!!

    DM

The Marhaba lounge (inside gate 15) is also airside.

    cheers

  13. My son is coming to Thailand for a holiday next month and due to an oversight is

stuck with a 12 hour layover in Abu Dhabi airport.

I have read from their website that there is a VIP lounge at or near the airport at a reasonable price

but I am unable to book it on line.

Could anybody confirm that there is indeed a lounge and suggest a way to book it.

    Thanks

The Airport Hotel at Abu Dhabi Airport, is a walk in hotel and cannot be booked online.

If I remember correctly the price is about 120 US $, but for that you get a nice room

in the transit area without having to pass through immigration.

    cheers

  14. Had an excellent year publishing books and am now ready to enjoy some of the fruits of our labor and get away from the village life of northern Thailand for a couple of weeks.

I am looking for a location where I will see as few people as possible, eat well, sleep comfortably and be able to provide our 3 little children with beautiful sandy beaches and crystal clear water, long walks and relaxing massages and bedauty treatments for my wife.

Unfortunately life goes on and I must be able to check email at least once a day and will have a laptop with me for that reason only. So a GSM phonelink, at the least is required. WiFi is aalso an option as is a Internet Cafe that will allow me to connect my machine.

I have heard of Samui, Kho Chang, Phuket and never been to any of them. What do you suggest? Please provide some images if you can. Looking at keeping this little two week outing between $1,500 to $2,000 total. We will drive wherever we choose to go to.

Try beaches north of Chumphon. Just starting to have some tourism but not much.

Also Bang Saphan ( halfway between Prachuap Khiri Khan and Chumphon) has some quit resorts.

Other than that it's all very touristy.

    cheers and good luck
