How to retire in Thailand
Gknrd replied to CharlieH's topic in Thai Visas, Residency, and Work Permits
I lived there for over 10 years.. Still have fond memories. But, Thailand is not a retirement destination for Western expats. I try to do my part. -
How to retire in Thailand
Gknrd replied to CharlieH's topic in Thai Visas, Residency, and Work Permits
Right now I am sitting in a western style condo in Colombia . Backed up to a nice stream with lush , almost jungle. Tropical birds singing . Temperature about 65 F. Clean air I can breathe. Not as safe as Thailand after dark. But, extremely nice to say the least. Will be here 6 months then head back to the US. Would not of been possible if I had sold out when I moved to Thailand. Different strokes I guess. Not to mention I can stay for 6 months hassle free on a tourist visa. Just me I guess. I prefer clean air to breath, clean western style amenities and reasonable prices. -
How to retire in Thailand
Gknrd replied to CharlieH's topic in Thai Visas, Residency, and Work Permits
Wise decision, most come to Thailand in pretty bad shape financially. Then when it gets bad have no where to go and have to stay for life. Best thing I ever did was not sell my home and bring all my assets into Thailand. -
British Tourist Warned Over Criticism of Thailand Online

Just going to get worse... Same with China. You cannot post anything against or about anything bad. Same same but different. -
Foreign Tourist Robbed of Gold Necklace While Asleep on Pattaya Street
Gknrd replied to webfact's topic in Pattaya News
Can't feel sorry for these guys, same as you can't feel sorry for the land and house scams. Marrying a hooker, the list is endless. It's all been on the internet for years now. Even before the internet it was written about in books. Next sucker is right around the corner. Personally if I were broke and Thai, I would be waiting for the next idiot to step off the plane also. -
Thai Airways bids farewell to iconic Boeing 747 ‘Queen of the Skies’

And in other news, Boeing murdered two planes full of passengers because of greed. I am from the US and if I had my way they would be forced out of business. -
Frozen pension policy turns British expat's dream into a nightmare
Gknrd replied to snoop1130's topic in Thailand News
From the US and have no restrictions. I really feel for retiree's from countries that freeze the pensions like this. I am sure there are work arounds. Such as keeping an address, and bank in the UK , but I really don't know. I can say ,with the inflation it is tearing a hole in my pension from the government, and I have the luxury of getting all the increases. I am fortunate to not have to rely 100% on my pension, but before inflation I could almost live on mine. Now , not an option. -
Thailand's Heatwave: High Temperatures of 44 Degrees Expected
Gknrd replied to webfact's topic in Thailand News
Had to laugh at the pic on this post. Clear beautiful sky with the sun.. More like 44 with a pollution haze where the sun is almost blocked out. So you are sweltering in unbearable heat and breathing unbreathable air. Yea, I miss those days. -
Thailand Customs to Apply VAT on All Postal Imports

When I was living there I learned the hard way not to buy anything to be sent into Thailand. Not sure how it could get any worse for foreigners. -

Khao Yai’s Haew Narok Waterfall dries amid Thailand drought
Gknrd replied to webfact's topic in Thailand News
The Door is eaten up with old timers that censor the crap out of that site also. I got banned about 15 years ago for some petty little thing. One of the mods banned me for life for basically no reason. I had designed a solar panel with local products for hot water and was showing it. They got mad when I would not give the plans over to them.. Knuckle draggers. -

Thailand’s oldest association endorses Big Joke after being fired Thursday
Gknrd replied to webfact's topic in Thailand News
If I were him I would go on the run, come back, and be deathly ill. Go to the police hospital where he will be nursed back to health in one month then run for president. -
I used to live there, from the US I have so many better unspoiled places it makes Thailand look like an over developed wasteland. Not to mention the government rules to stay there. Passsssssss Honestly even if they gave permanent retirement visas I would never go back to live or even visit for that matter. Only easy thing about living in Thailand are the women.

Songkran festival sees surge in road accidents across Thailand

Time banks: Are they the solution to Thailand’s aging crisis?
Gknrd replied to webfact's topic in Thailand News
A problem all over the world for sure. I live on SS here in the US , and alone. I have no problems what so ever. But, in the US we have a HUGE social network to support the single older folks like me. In Thailand it is only a problem because they have no pension unless you worked for the government. Kind of like China. Both Thailand and China are on the same trajectory. I tried working for the government here in the US and found it to be a joke, for me. But, the retirement was great and benefits were off the charts. Luckily here in the US if you work for a big company and do well the retirement will be in place in spades. -
Phuket hotel evicts foreigner who threatened taxi driver with knives

And when I was getting a yearly extension of stay in KK. I questioned a young Thai immigration officer about what she was wanting . She proceeded to follow me out of the office screaming and threatening me. Said I was going to jail and would be deported. Friend of mine's wife passed away from a heart attack. The in-laws trashed his house and pickup and threatened him to get out of his house so they could take over. Wonder why that did not make the news... -
Air Pollution Spurs Lung Cancer Spike in Northern Thailand
Gknrd replied to webfact's topic in Thailand News
They don't care, the air pollution in Thailand kills more people than anything in the country , and has for years. Last year 25,000 soles lost their lives directly related to air pollution.
