  1. I've stayed overnight at a Y in San Francisco and Manhattan. I don't remember about restaurants but I do remember the shower rooms. Maybe they served a continental brekkie. Often they have dorm rooms like hostels and of course each one is going to different in some aspects. My impression back then is they attracted a lot of closeted and bi curious men not out enough to walk into a gay bar. (This was before apps.)
  2. Anecdotal. That doesn't mean that a year or two from now that that office won't start auditing people and encouraging people that DO have accessable income to file. Consider that she might not even know yet that not all foreign retirement income types are excluded. Consider the extra work dealing with complicated foreign stuff for nationals of countless nations when it is probably true that a strong majority will end up owing no tax (but some would). Human nature to shoo you away. But nobody can predict whether and when their attitude might change.
  3. I'm not a Thai tax auditer but they CAN see the incoming remittances. So if they see an annual remittance of a million baht and they ask you to show the source of that money and you can't do that, it seems to me they would have the legal right to say the entire million was taxable even if none of it was. Keep the flippin' records!
  4. Doesn't matter what you think. It was and still is a gay anthem. But it has become much bigger than that and there is no way that Trump is presenting the song as a gay anthem. His movement is deeply ANTI LGBT civil rights. But ironically it still IS a gay anthem. I think this video prude washes this a bit. I was young man young man when the song hit and what it meant was the YMCA was a good place to go locally for gym stuff or as a cheap hotel when travelling with the obvious feature of it being very very very cruisy. https://youtu.be/g-uo8mWaA0A
  5. I'm assuming Trump royalties or not that all the publicity is meaning lots of money for them. I hope so. Otherwise they're selling their souls for nothing.
  6. Nah. He's a weak man's idea of a strong man.
  7. Is that the actual Thai tax filing page or something preliminary?
  8. I have no idea YET how this is going to be enforced. Likely it will be an office by office situation which could change at any time because of national orders. But the tax office isn't going to contact anyone to ask them to file. They may contact people to come in for an AUDIT.
  9. Audits like calling you into their office to show your records. Duh.
  10. The Thai tax system is based on self assessment. Expats are free to not bother to do a sincere self assessment and just assume they aren't subject to Thai tax, and based on the enforcment policies of their office (we can't possibly know that yet) they may probably get away with that even if they did really owe tax. But audits could come later, and then you would need detailed records to show regardless and ignorance of the law would not be a valid excuse. I used to be of the opinion just to ignore all this but have come to the conclusion that's worthwhile to be adult about this, learn about my specific situation as much as possible, start to keep detailed records in view of possible audits, and to do sincere self assessments. That's NOT the same thing as goading expats to rush out to get a TIN when their self assessment says they don't need one (or to file). I will get a TIN only when I really need one.
  11. Tax residency is indeed based on the 180 rule. A person with retirement status in Thailand could be a Thai resident or could not be based on the above. A foreigner retired in Thailand comes from another nation. That nation may have a DTA with Thailand and may not. If his nation does have a DTA the specifics of his nation's DTA are relevant to his self assessment. Typically but not always retired expats will have remittances into Thailand of one or various kinds. The tax accessability in Thailand of those remittances depend on the the specific sourse of those funds. For example a remittance based on a profitable stock sale is profit taxable in Thailand. A remittance based on an excluded retirement income type might be taxable in Thailand and might not be based on the specifics of your nation's DTA, if any. Legally it is the responsibility of all Thai tax residents to do a self assessment of their specific situation. If that's complicated, you might need to pay for help with that.
  12. Having retirement status here is irrelevant.
  13. Yes but I think you can file a US form to refund that but not yet sure of that.
  14. That's not how the system.works. It's based on Thai tax residents doing a self assessment. I have done so and know I don't need to file but will at a future year. It's entirely dependent on your individual case.
  15. You're misinformed. That is not what having a dta means.
  16. Sure but he was given misinformation.
  17. You can do that but it might bite you later if audited depending on the specific details of your case.
  18. Also taxed in Thailand so you get credits. Roth IRAs are not taxed in the US but are taxed in Thailand.
  19. Update on Panda where I can't use my BB mc or Kbank visa debit cards and they restrict True Money to Thais. To join or renew the Panda Pro status which gets various discounts they have very recently added the option of joining that with Add To Cart when placing any order. So that helps me as I now only have the cash option with Panda although I have learned you can pay cash orders by scanning driver QR code from your banking apps.
  20. They're old now. They're on record as not being Trump fans. But disco era Trump is a fan of theirs. So obviously doing this brings them a lot of money and also greatly enhances their historical legacy. Most humans couldn't resist such easily gained benefits. YMCA is a gay anthrm but it's a relic. The Trump maga fascist movement represents going backwards in LGBT civil rights. They hope to reverse marriage equality just as they killed federal abortion rights. It's already started in Idaho. No doubt it will be revisited by the far right supreme court. A key part of their campaign was about scapegoating trans people. So can't approve of them playing this event but understand why they couldn't resist
  21. I wad replying to members speaking off Australia specific.
