What Movies or TV shows are you watching (2025)
Jingthing replied to Rimmer's topic in Entertainment
So I watched this Indian film All We Imagine as Light and it held my interest for sure and I recognized it as "different and important" but in conclusion I just wasn't feeling it as much as I had hoped. I felt it was like a European art film. That was before I read this about it. That's what the Indian critics who rejected it for submission as best Indian film for best foreign film for the Oscars felt too. An Indian movie, loved abroad, is snubbed at home for Oscar submission : Goats and Soda : NPR Anyway, who knows, maybe it will do more for you than it did for me. -
I'm aware of that but if Trump takes Greenland by force I seriously doubt he would be respecting any such old treaties or formalities. He's not going to bother going through with grabbing it just to give it to another country. Another example, Panama. Trump has no legal right to grab it under a previous treaty. But he's trying. Please stop trying to sane wash and normalize a lawless madman.

Trump is doing fascism theater. There was zero need to declare a border emergency and involve the military because the border has recently been quite quiet. But declaring such an emergency needed or not (not) gives him many more dictator type powers than otherwise. There was also no need to use military planes to fly people out. The normal transport methods work quite well. Trump like dictators in general loves to create artificial crises and then "fix" them and we'll be seeing plenty of that classic trick from him in the coming ever accelerating dystopian years. It is true for now that ICE is targeting super baddy types but if they happen to find 100 law abiding tax paying beloved community members in such a raid, they're busted too. Of course any president has deportation powers. But Trump isn't any president. He's milking this for all its worth and bringing "Dr. Phil" along for the ride. He will probably be building "detention camps" as the numbers add up and very recently he has announced an intention to deport CITIZEN criminals to be sent to prisons in El Salvador in order to save money on keeping them locked up. Saving money is great but sorry intentionally deporting citizens, even the worst of them, is outrageous. Clearly he is trying to desensitize the population to more and more fascist tactics, and there is little doubt he will be using the military INTERNALLY to deal with immigration matters, particularly in what he considers "internal enemy" cities and U.S. states. He will break every rule, norm, and law that he can possibly get away with, and he will be getting away with alot.

Taking this closer to home suppose Trump put 50 percent tariffs on Thailand seriously damaging the Thai economy. Would Thai people become hostile to Americans here? Would the government take any action other than tradng even more with Russia and China. I really don't know But I would expect some tit for tat. For example if bank accounts of Thais in the US were frozen why wouldn't Thailand not do the same to expat Americans?

Typical ugly imperialist Yanqui BS. On par with saying slaves were actually happy. Panama's economy is doing very well. Panama City is a great expat destination often compared to Miami but housing there is too expensive for the lower budget seeking expat crowd. You can't equate the Noreiga era to now and that was well before Panama became super popular with expats.

It obviously depends on the specific nations, the specific actions of Trump, and whether there are many US expats living there. For example Panama. If Trump invades Panama as threatened to reclam the canal of course there would be backlash. Of course the state department would tell Americans to leave before invading but many would stay.
