Picture from Facebook. A motorcyclist shocked commuters by performing daring stunts on a major road, riding hands-free and sideways on his red Yamaha Filano. The reckless behaviour, captured on video, has sparked mixed reactions online. The viral clip, originally shared by a Facebook user, shows a man dressed in a black shirt, shorts, and a face covering as he maneuvers his motorcycle dangerously. The rider turned his body sideways and released both hands from the handlebars while speeding down a busy road. Fellow motorists watched anxiously, unsure if he would crash. The post captioned the video with the phrase, “Riding with no fear of death”, highlighting the thrill-seeking but perilous behaviour. A local witness, Mr. M 20, who filmed the incident, shared his experience with reporters. He explained that he spotted the rider while returning home along Sukhumvit Road, near the South Pattaya intersection heading toward Sattahip. The man rode in that bizarre position for 2-3 kilometres, Mr. M recounted. I found it strange and a bit cool, but it was also reckless and dangerous. I quickly took out my phone to record it. While many viewers expressed amazement at the rider audacity, others criticised the stunt as hazardous and irresponsible. Mr. M added, I don’t want anyone to imitate this behaviour, it’stoo risky and could easily lead to accidents. Local authorities have yet to comment on the incident, but calls for stricter enforcement of road safety regulations have intensified following the video’s circulation. -- 2025-01-27

Picture from responders An incident occurred on the morning of January 27, when a hospital patient leapt from an 18-storey building, resulting in her death. The incident was reported at 09:30 to Pol Sub Lt Piyawit Cheelan, an investigator with Pathum Thani City Police Station. Authorities and rescue teams immediately responded to the scene. The incident took place at the rear of a hospital in Pathum Thani, where the lifeless body of the patient was discovered. Hospital staff had moved her remains to the second floor, wrapping her body in white cloth and covering it with a stainless-steel screen to shield the scene from public view. The deceased was identified only as Ms. B, a native of Phetchabun province. She was still dressed in a hospital gown, and initial examinations revealed severe injuries, including head trauma, broken limbs and abdominal trauma. Her body has been sent to the Institute of Forensic Science under the Ministry of Justice. According to hospital staff, Ms. B had been admitted to deliver her twins on 17 January. On 22 January, she underwent a premature caesarean section, giving birth to twin girls. However, her behaviour suggested significant distress. A visiting neighbour told staff that Ms. B, a single mother with two other children, was overwhelmed by the prospect of caring for four children, especially her premature twins. Before the tragedy, Ms. B reportedly called her neighbour, expressing her anxiety over the lack of support and her concern for her newborn daughters. Shortly afterwards, she informed hospital staff that she needed to purchase items for her babies. Instead, she took the lift to the 18th floor, opened the safety barrier, and jumped. Her body struck the second-floor balcony with a loud crash. Medical personnel rushed to assist her but found that she had already succumbed to her injuries. To preserve the dignity of other patients and visitors, her body was promptly moved inside. The police are conducting a thorough investigation into the incident and are in the process of contacting the victim's family. If you or anyone you know is in emotional distress, please contact the Samaritans of Thailand 24-hour hotline: 02 713 6791 (English), 02 713 6793 (Thai) or the Thai Mental Health Hotline at 1323 (Thai). Please also contact your friends or relatives at this time if you have feelings of loneliness, stress or depression. Seek out help. -- 2025-01-27

UPDATE Bird DNA Found in Both Engines of Jeju Air Plane That Crashed, Report Reveals Pictures from the report. Both engines of the Jeju Air Boeing 737-800 that crashed last month contained DNA from migratory ducks, according to a preliminary report released on 27 January. Authorities are still investigating the cause of South Korea’s deadliest aviation disaster, which left 179 of the 181 passengers and crew on board dead. The six-page report from South Korea’s Aviation and Railway Accident Investigation Board (ARAIB) identified the remains of Baikal Teals, a species of duck that migrates to South Korea in large numbers during the winter, in both engines of the ill-fated plane. The Jeju Air flight, which departed from Bangkok on 29 December 2024, made an emergency belly landing at Muan International Airport after overshooting the runway. It crashed into an embankment supporting navigation equipment, known as localisers, before catching fire and partially exploding. While the report provided details of the bird strike, it did not draw conclusions about why the aircraft attempted a sudden landing without deploying its landing gear or why the black boxes both the Cockpit Voice Recorder (CVR) and Flight Data Recorder (FDR) stopped recording four minutes before the crash. The engines were buried in the soil mound of the embankment, and the fore fuselage scattered debris up to 200 metres from the site, the report noted. Experts suggest the reinforced concrete and earth structure of the localiser embankment contributed significantly to the high fatality rate. Investigators plan to dismantle the engines, conduct detailed examinations of components, and analyse in-flight data, air traffic control records, and the bird strike evidence. The embankment and localiser equipment will also be closely scrutinised. These exhaustive investigations aim to establish the precise cause of the accident, the report stated. The preliminary report highlighted that the pilots were aware of a flock of birds on the plane’s final approach. However, it remains unclear when the bird strike occurred. The aircraft had declared ‘Mayday’ emergency for a bird strike during a go-around manoeuvre. At the moment the flight recorders ceased functioning, the plane was at an altitude of 498 feet (152 metres) and travelling at 161 knots (298 km/h) approximately 1.1 nautical miles (2 km) from the runway. As required by the International Civil Aviation Organization (ICAO), a preliminary report has been submitted within 30 days of the crash. ICAO encourages final reports to be made public within 12 months. South Korea has shared its findings with ICAO and relevant stakeholders, including Thailand, where the flight originated, and the United States and France, home countries of the aircraft and engine manufacturers. Picture from responders. A man was shot dead in front of a house in Samut Prakan after an altercation with his ex-wife’s new partner, who claims the shooting was in self-defence. The incident occurred at around 22:30 on 26 January in the Phraeksa Mai subdistrict. Police were alerted to the shooting and arrived at the scene along with forensic teams and rescue units. The victim, identified as Mr Somkiat 42, was found lying unconscious in the driveway of a two-storey house. He had sustained three gunshot wounds: one to the chest, one to the right arm, and one to the left wrist. Despite attempts to resuscitate him, he was pronounced dead at Paolo Samut Prakan Hospital shortly after. A semi-automatic 9mm handgun was found near the victim, with rounds remaining in the magazine. Six spent 9mm shell casings and two bullets were recovered from the scene. Witnesses and preliminary investigations revealed that Mr Somkiat had followed his ex-wife, Ms Juthaporn and her new partner, Mr Thitiwat 29, to the house. After arriving, Mr Somkiat exited his vehicle holding a firearm and approached the couple. According to Mr Thitiwat, Mr Somkiat chambered a round and attempted to aim the gun at him. Ms Juthaporn reportedly intervened in an attempt to de-escalate the situation. However, Mr Somkiat evaded her and continued his advance. In response, Mr Thitiwat retrieved his own firearm, a 9mm semi-automatic pistol, from a bag in his car and fired multiple shots at Mr Somkiat. Mr Thitiwat stated he acted in self-defence and could not recall how many shots he fired. He then fled the scene in panic but later contacted police and surrendered himself at midnight, waiting at the entrance to the housing estate. Officers recovered Mr Thitiwat’s car, a Toyota Altis, which contained the firearm used in the shooting. The weapon, along with Mr Somkiat’s gun, was confirmed to be legally registered. Both weapons and ammunition have been seized as evidence. Witnesses, including neighbours, reported hearing six gunshots but did not hear any prior argument. Forensic evidence, CCTV footage, and witness testimonies are being reviewed to determine whether Mr Somkiat fired his weapon during the confrontation. Police have charged Mr Thitiwat with homicide, possession of a firearm, and discharging a firearm in a public area. Investigations are ongoing to confirm the sequence of events. -- 2025-01-27

Picture from responders. Two children tragically lost their lives after slipping and drowning in a manmade pond on January 26, at a durian orchard in Ban Huai Khanun, Moo 13, Ban Na Subdistrict, Mueang Chumphon District. Emergency services, including rescue units from Saichon Radio Centre and medical teams from Chumphon Khet Udomsak Hospital and Thonburi Chumphon Hospital, rushed to the scene at approximately 16:15. The incident occurred near the Thung Mak intersection, around 800 metres off the main road. The pond had been dug by the orchard's owner for agricultural purposes and lined with black plastic sheeting, creating a slippery surface. This made it impossible for the children to climb out once they fell in. Rescuers found three children in distress. A 3 year old boy and a girl aged 6 were unresponsive. Despite CPR efforts, they were later pronounced dead at the hospital. An 11 year old girl, who had inhaled some water, was rushed to the hospital and is receiving treatment. Mr Somchai, 64, the orchard owner, recounted the heartbreaking moment he arrived at the scene. "I've never seen children playing in the pond before. When I arrived, I saw three children and a black dog floating in the water. One of the children was raising their hands, pleading for help. I immediately went in to rescue them and the dog before calling for assistance." The mother of the children was reportedly watering plants in the orchard when the incident occurred. Authorities have reminded residents to exercise caution around artificial ponds, particularly those lined with slippery materials, and to keep children under close supervision near water sources. -- 2025-01-27

Picture from responders. A four-hour fire engulfed a row of townhouses in Bangkok's Bang Khun Thian district, leaving three injured and a man having a lucky escape after climbing to the rooftop and pouring water from a tank over himself to escape the flames. At 14:15 on 26 January, Lieutenant Sathon Rabiebpho, Deputy Investigator at Thian Talay Police Station, received a report of a fire at a commercial building located at No. 31, Soi Thian Talay 26. The structure, a three-storey townhouse registered as a partnership business dealing in plastic parts for motorcycles, quickly became engulfed in flames, with the fire spreading to three adjacent units under the same company's management. Firefighters from Bangkok's Department of Disaster Prevention and Mitigation battled the intense blaze for over four hours before finally bringing it under control. Three individuals suffered minor injuries and were rescued by emergency responders. They were given first aid on the scene before being transferred to Bang Khun Thian Hospital for further treatment. Mr Paisan, the 43-year-old business owner, stated that the cause of the fire remains unclear. He mentioned that welding work had previously been conducted in the building but could not confirm whether it was linked to the incident. During the blaze, one of his employees, later identified as Mr Kriangsak Suansamran, aged 57, was unaccounted for, causing concern among both authorities and his family. Mr Kriangsak was later found alive and reunited with his two sons, who had been anxiously awaiting updates. He described his harrowing ordeal, explaining that as the fire broke out, he fled to the rooftop in search of safety. Unable to see due to thick smoke, he discovered a water tank near a mango tree and began pouring water over himself to relieve the heat. Fortunately, the rooftop provided some breathable air, allowing him to survive until he was rescued. "I ran to the rooftop to escape the fire, but the smoke was so dense that I couldn't see a way out. I found the water tank and kept pouring water on myself when the heat became unbearable," Mr Kriangsak recounted, relieved to have survived and reunited with his sons. Authorities are now gathering evidence and coordinating with forensic specialists to determine the exact cause of the fire. Further inspections will be conducted to ensure a thorough investigation into the incident. -- 2025-01-27

Picture from responders. A road crash occurred in Chonburi when thick PM 2.5 haze caused a 23-year-old pickup truck driver to lose control and crash into a tree. The collision happened on January 26, on a curve along the Ang Kraphong route in Moo 3, Kasetsuwan Subdistrict, Bo Thong District. Emergency responders from Sawanghet Ban Thung Hiang Rescue Unit rushed to the scene following reports of a collision with the driver trapped inside the wreckage. Upon arrival, they found a white Toyota pickup truck severely damaged. The driver, identified as Mr. Songwut, was critically injured, unconscious, and suffering multiple injuries. Rescue teams used hydraulic equipment to free him from the vehicle before transporting him to a nearby hospital for urgent treatment. Local residents reported that the site is a known dangerous curve and, at the time, was heavily obscured by thick PM 2.5 haze, which severely reduced visibility. They believe the driver, unfamiliar with the area, failed to notice the curve and lost control, leading to the crash. In a twist, Mr. Sano, the victim's father, who had been driving another vehicle some distance behind his son, arrived at the scene and was shocked to discover that the person being rescued was his own child. "We were driving from Chanthaburi to collect durians for sale, but we were in separate vehicles. My son was ahead of me. When I arrived at the scene and saw the rescue teams assisting a white pickup truck, I stopped to check and realised it was my son," said the distressed father. The accident highlights the dangers posed by poor visibility due to PM 2.5 haze, which continues to impact various areas of Thailand. Local authorities have urged drivers to exercise caution, especially on unfamiliar roads. -- 2025-01-27

Picture courtesy of NRECD. Authorities in Chachoengsao raided a factory storing electronic waste contaminated with heavy metals, seizing over 10 tonnes of hazardous materials. Two Chinese nationals were arrested for possession of dangerous substances without proper authorisation. Police Colonel Arun Wachirasrisukanya, Deputy Commander of the Natural Resources and Environmental Crime Division (NRECD), along with Police Colonel Winyu Jaemsai, Superintendent of Division 2, and officials from the Department of Industrial Works, conducted the operation in Moo 9, Ko Khanun Subdistrict, Phanom Sarakham District. Initial investigations revealed 0.5 tonnes of shredded electronic waste contaminated with heavy metals, an additional 1 tonne of heavy metal-contaminated products, and 10 tonnes of separated hazardous waste. These items were seized as evidence. Authorities linked the incident to an earlier Customs Department operation, which intercepted 10 containers illegally imported into Thailand. Declared under false documentation, the 256 tonnes of electronic waste were smuggled in by a company operating in Phanom Sarakham District. Further investigations revealed a similar case on 5 January 2025, when a factory in Sri Maha Phot District, Prachinburi Province, was shut down by the Department of Industrial Works. That facility was found to have relocated its previously seized electronic waste to the Chachoengsao factory. At the scene, police identified Mr Li, 55, a Chinese national and factory manager, and Mr Guo, 43, also a Chinese national and the owner of the hazardous materials. Neither had the necessary permits to store such substances. Both men were arrested for “joint possession of Category 3 hazardous substances without authorisation.” During questioning, the suspects admitted to the charges and were subsequently handed over to the Phanom Sarakham Police Station for further legal proceedings. -- 2025-01-27
