These creatures typically form pods of 10 to 60 individuals but can sometimes gather in larger groups. It is also not uncommon to see them mingling with other species, such as bottlenose dolphins. According to the Seub Nakhasathien Foundation, the melon-headed whale is classified as a protected species under Thailand’s Wildlife Preservation and Protection Act of 1992. Additionally, they are listed in Appendix II of the Convention on International Trade in Endangered Species of Wild Fauna and Flora (CITES). Thailand has witnessed sightings of melon-headed whales in various locations, including the Similan and Surin Islands in Phang Nga, Koh Tao in Surat Thani, and instances of stranding in Trat, Chanthaburi, Rayong, Nakhon Si Thammarat, Songkhla, and Phuket. The first recorded mass stranding in Thailand occurred on 26 June 2008, when 30 whales were found at Koh Racha Yai in Phuket. Dr Kongkiat Kittiwatanawong, head of the Marine Endangered Species Research Centre in Phuket, emphasised the importance of these whales as apex predators in the marine ecosystem. Thriving in deep waters, they rely on an abundant supply of fish and squid for sustenance and migrate cyclically between feeding and breeding grounds. Their presence is a strong indicator of a healthy marine environment. “If the ecosystem is not suitable, whether due to insufficient food or poor breeding conditions, these whales will migrate to better locations. This knowledge is passed down through generations,” Dr Kongkiat explained. At the site, a tour bus with registration number from Phitsanulok was found with its left front tyre blown out and shattered windows along its side. Nearby, a six-wheel truck carrying liquid rubber was severely damaged at the front. According to Police Colonel Seksit Prakotnue, Chief of Mueang Satun Police Station, the tour bus, driven by 53-year-old Mr. Preecha Seesod, was travelling from Langkawi Island towards La-ngu District when the GPS navigation system directed it off course. In an attempt to make a sudden U-turn at the junction, the bus was struck by the oncoming truck. The six-wheel truck, driven by 44-year-old Mr. Somsak Tehsahoh, was fully loaded with liquid rubber. Mr. Somsak suffered severe injuries, including chest injuries, a fractured right ankle, a broken shin bone, and lacerations on his legs. Three tourists from the bus also sustained injuries and were taken to Satun Hospital for medical care. Mr. Sitthichai Leelanon, village chief of Khuan Pho Subdistrict, stated that the truck’s full load likely contributed to delayed braking and stability issues. He also noted that the crash occurred at a busy junction, and the bus’s abrupt U-turn made the collision unavoidable. Police Lieutenant Atsadawut Eiadkaew, a deputy investigator from Krathum Baen Police Station, along with medical staff from Krathum Baen Hospital and rescue personnel from the Ruamkatanyu Foundation, responded to the scene. Upon arrival, authorities found the body of a 59-year-old worker, Mr. Prasit, employed in the installation of utility poles. The victim suffered severe head injuries caused by the impact of a heavy object. Nearby, was the a drilling rig device still attached to a crane with the drill bit detached and on the ground near the body. Initial investigations revealed that, as the victim was working the bolts connecting the drill’s motor to the drill bit, when it became loose. This caused the drill bit to fall from the crane and strike him on the head, crushing his skull. The police have arranged for the body to be transported to the hospital for further examination. The deceased, identified as Mr. Henh Nhi Ho, 32, was a student at a university in northern Thailand. He had visited the Bang Si Mueang Police Station at 17:00 to report the incident. After filing his complaint, he was seen smoking a cigarette near the station before disappearing for over 20 minutes. CCTV footage revealed that Mr. Henh walked to the rear of the building, climbed a communication pole to reach the third-floor rooftop, and removed his white long-sleeve jacket and orange cap. At 17:25 he jumped from the roof, sustaining critical injuries. Rescue teams from the Ruamkatanyu Foundation and Phra Nang Klao Hospital arrived promptly to provide assistance, but he succumbed to his injuries shortly after being admitted to hospital. Surveillance footage from 23 January at 16:54 showed Mr. Henh, wearing a white jacket over a white T-shirt, black trousers, and an orange cap, smoking near the station's staircase. He later walked to the back of the building and climbed to the rooftop. Before jumping, he left his jacket, cap, and mobile phone on the rooftop. On 24 January, forensic teams examined the scene, uncovering a red LM cigarette pack, a yellow Camel cigarette pack, a yellow lighter, and three used cigarette butts on the third-floor balcony. The rooftop also contained Mr. Henh's belongings. Investigators determined he climbed the communication pole because there is no direct stairway to the roof. Pol Col Somchai Jangthamma, chief of Bang Si Mueang Police Station, stated that the deceased had appeared distressed. After filing his report, he requested to smoke a cigarette but later disappeared. It is believed that stress over being asked to vacate his hotel room triggered the decision. "We have contacted the Vietnamese embassy and arranged for a translator to assist in coordinating with the victim's family. All officers present at the scene will be questioned, and we will thoroughly investigate the circumstances, including the victim's hotel room, for additional evidence," Pol Col Somchai said. They were joined by Kasem Jaichan, Mae Tha District Chief, school director Chakrapong Kongnun, and teacher Phongsakorn Wandue, who was the first to witness the incident. Mr. Phongsakorn, who resides in the teacher’s accommodation next to the building, recalled hearing multiple loud noises around 23:30. Initially, he assumed someone was setting off firecrackers. However, when the electricity in his home began to flicker, he stepped outside to investigate. He discovered flames in the centre of the left-wing of the building, which was being used for storage. The fire spread rapidly, prompting him to alert the school director and call emergency services. The blaze destroyed four rooms, including a storage room that housed desks, chairs, musical instruments, educational materials, and books, as well as two classrooms and a library. The initial damage assessment is valued at more than 2 million baht. The affected building, constructed in 1926, was entirely made of wood and had been in use for nearly a century. Thatphoom Jaruprachya, Acting Commander of the Economic Crime Suppression Division (ECDD), along with Pol. Col. Wichak Tarom, Deputy Commander of ECDD, Pol. Col. Chatchawan Chuchaiyarot, Superintendent of Division 2, and Ms. Sasiwee Narakorn, Deputy Director of the Food Division at the Thai FDA. The team raided a warehouse in Bang Bo district, Samut Prakan, following a court warrant. Inside, they discovered sachets of coffee, vitamin C supplements, and other dietary products, totalling over 1 million units. These items were labelled with counterfeit FDA registration numbers, copied from legitimate products to avoid detection. Pol. Col. Thatphoom revealed that the items had been smuggled into Thailand from China without undergoing customs clearance or meeting Thai FDA safety standards. These unregulated products were then prepared for sale on various online platforms. Investigators linked the warehouse to a Chinese-backed business entity involved in logistics operations. The suspected investors and business owners are currently based overseas. Authorities are now working to summon all individuals connected to the case for questioning and legal action. Pol. Col. They reported that Mathias, who had been ordered to remove his dogs from the area while legal proceedings were ongoing, has continued to disregard the ban, raising fears for public safety. Residents provided video evidence of Mathias walking his dogs without collars or leashes. Picture from responders At 06:30 on 24 January, a fire broke out in a car parked in Vibhavadi Rangsit Soi 5, Intersection 1-2-1, located in the Chomphon Subdistrict of Chatuchak District, Bangkok. The incident resulted in significant damage to two vehicles but fortunately caused no injuries or fatalities. The fire originated in a silver Mercedes-Benz C220 (registration number from Bangkok), which was fuelled by petrol only. The flames engulfed the car completely, leaving it entirely destroyed. The blaze then spread to a nearby white Suzuki Swift (registration number from Bangkok), also a petrol-powered vehicle. The Suzuki sustained partial damage, with the fire affecting its engine compartment and front console and windscreen. Firefighters from Phahonyothin Fire and Rescue Station responded promptly to the scene and were able to extinguish the blaze in about 15 minutes. Preliminary investigations suggest the fire was caused by heat accumulation in the brake system of the Mercedes-Benz. Authorities are continuing to investigate the incident to confirm the cause of the fire. -- 2025-01-25
