  2. Picture from responders. A heroic street vendor has been praised for his brave actions after he dived into a canal to rescue an elderly couple trapped in their car, which had plunged into the water following a collision with a passenger bus. The dramatic incident occurred around 20.00 on January 24, near a Caltex petrol station in Moo 3, Khlong Sam subdistrict, Khlong Luang district, Pathum Thani. Emergency responders from the Khlong Sam Subdistrict Administrative Organisation (SAO) arrived at the scene to find the car completely submerged in the irrigation canal. According to Jeerakit Chanchanklang, a first responder, the vehicle was a black Toyota Vios driven by a man in his 70s with his wife of a similar age as a passenger. Preliminary reports suggest the elderly man accidentally pressed the accelerator in panic after the car grazed a passing passenger bus, causing the vehicle to veer into the canal. Fortunately, the couple was rescued just in time by a passerby before the car became fully submerged. Both were rushed to Prachathipat Hospital for treatment, though they were unable to provide statements due to shock. Ms. Ploy a witness recounted the incident. She explained that she was in a taxi heading home when she noticed the car crash into the canal. Hearing her driver shout in alarm, she quickly instructed him to look for something sturdy to assist those trapped inside the car while filming the unfolding events. The real-life hero, whose name has not been disclosed, was a street vendor working across from the crash site. “I heard a loud screech of brakes and saw the car plunge into the canal. I immediately took off my shirt and jumped in to help,” he said. Upon reaching the vehicle, he found the elderly couple inside with their windows rolled down. The woman, who had injured her arm, was crying in pain. He instructed the man to crawl out of the car while he worked to pull the injured woman to safety. Summoning all his strength, he managed to drag her out just as the car sank beneath the surface. Police later arrived to examine the scene and retrieve the sunken vehicle using a tow truck. No additional occupants or documents were found inside the car. Authorities confirmed that the couple are now safe but remain under medical observation due to the trauma of the incident. The exact cause of the incident is still under investigation, as the passenger bus involved did not stop at the scene. -- 2025-01-25

  4. Picture courtesy of Park Officals. In a rare and breathtaking sight, a large pod of melon-headed whales delighted onlookers near the Similan Islands on the afternoon of 24 January. Park officials from the Similan Islands National Park reported the encounter during a routine patrol to monitor scuba diving activities. The majestic marine mammals were spotted near Koh Bangu (Island Nine), swimming gracefully across the area. Melon-headed whales are often mistaken for short-finned pilot whales due to their similar appearance. However, they can be distinguished by the position of their dorsal fin, which is located at the middle of their body, and their rounded foreheads without pronounced beaks. These creatures typically form pods of 10 to 60 individuals but can sometimes gather in larger groups. It is also not uncommon to see them mingling with other species, such as bottlenose dolphins. According to the Seub Nakhasathien Foundation, the melon-headed whale is classified as a protected species under Thailand’s Wildlife Preservation and Protection Act of 1992. Additionally, they are listed in Appendix II of the Convention on International Trade in Endangered Species of Wild Fauna and Flora (CITES). Thailand has witnessed sightings of melon-headed whales in various locations, including the Similan and Surin Islands in Phang Nga, Koh Tao in Surat Thani, and instances of stranding in Trat, Chanthaburi, Rayong, Nakhon Si Thammarat, Songkhla, and Phuket. The first recorded mass stranding in Thailand occurred on 26 June 2008, when 30 whales were found at Koh Racha Yai in Phuket. Dr Kongkiat Kittiwatanawong, head of the Marine Endangered Species Research Centre in Phuket, emphasised the importance of these whales as apex predators in the marine ecosystem. Thriving in deep waters, they rely on an abundant supply of fish and squid for sustenance and migrate cyclically between feeding and breeding grounds. Their presence is a strong indicator of a healthy marine environment. “If the ecosystem is not suitable, whether due to insufficient food or poor breeding conditions, these whales will migrate to better locations. This knowledge is passed down through generations,” Dr Kongkiat explained. This remarkable sighting highlights the ecological importance of preserving marine habitats around Thailand to support these magnificent creatures and their complex ecosystems. -- 2025-01-25

  6. Picture and video from social media. Social media erupted in criticism following an incident in Pattaya where a songthaew (baht bus) driver started to drive off without ensuring all passengers had safely disembarked. The incident resulted in a foreign tourist falling face-first onto the road. The incident, which occurred on Soi Buakhao in South Pattaya, was captured in a video posted by Facebook user Saenguthai Charoenphon. The caption read, “Even if it’s just a minor accident, it must have been painful for the disabled person. Drivers should always check if passengers have alighted safely before moving the vehicle.” The video shows an older male tourist, who is using walking aids, attempting to step off the songthaew when the vehicle began to move. The sudden motion caused him to fall onto the road. Fortunately, bystanders, some believed to be staff from a nearby entertainment venue, rushed to help the man and escorted him to safety at the roadside. The footage has sparked widespread debate online, with many criticising the driver’s negligence. Commenters questioned why the driver failed to check if all passengers had safely disembarked before pulling away. One commenter wrote, “This kind of carelessness could lead to serious injuries. Drivers must be more responsible.” This incident highlights concerns over the safety standards of songthaew operations in tourist areas like Pattaya. Many have called for stricter regulations and better training for drivers to ensure the safety of both locals and visitors. Authorities have yet to comment on the incident, but social media users are urging officials to address the issue to prevent similar incidents in the future. -- 2025-01-25 ScreenRecording_01-24-2025 19-11-42_1.mp4

  8. Picture from responders . A fire claimed the life of a 3-year-old boy in a forested area in Sakhon Nakhon Province. Authorities revealed that the boy’s parents had left a candle burning while they went out to run errands, only to return to the tragic scene. At 00:30 on 24 January, Sakhon Nakhon police received a report of a fire in a wooded area near Nong Sanom in the municipality of Sakhon Nakhon. Investigators, forensic experts, and emergency responders rushed to the site, approximately 200 metres from the roadside. There, they discovered the charred remains of the young boy. The boy’s parents, who collect and sell scrap for a living, explained that they had previously rented a house in the city, but financial difficulties forced them to move into the forest. According to preliminary investigations, the mother, 20-year-old Jiraporn, had gone to a convenience store, while the father, 21-year-old Natthawut, had left to charge his mobile phone at a location with electricity. To provide light in the darkness, they lit a candle and left their son sleeping alone in a mosquito net. When they returned, the fire had already engulfed the area, and their efforts to extinguish the flames and save their child were unsuccessful. Police Lieutenant Colonel Thanakrit Charoennetikul of the Sakhon Nakhon Police stated that both parents are devastated by the loss of their child. The authorities have charged them with “negligence causing the death of another person” as the investigation continues. The tragic incident highlights the harsh realities faced by families living in precarious conditions and the devastating consequences of a single moment of oversight. -- 2025-01-25

  10. Picture from responders. A tour bus carrying 46 passengers collided with a six-wheel truck transporting rubber at a traffic light junction on the Satun–Che Bilang road on 24 January. The crash, reportedly caused by a GPS error leading to a sudden U-turn, left four people injured and passengers screaming in panic. The collision occurred at a red-light junction on the Satun–Che Bilang road. Police and rescue teams from Mueang Satun Police Station rushed to the scene upon receiving the emergency call. At the site, a tour bus with registration number from Phitsanulok was found with its left front tyre blown out and shattered windows along its side. Nearby, a six-wheel truck carrying liquid rubber was severely damaged at the front. According to Police Colonel Seksit Prakotnue, Chief of Mueang Satun Police Station, the tour bus, driven by 53-year-old Mr. Preecha Seesod, was travelling from Langkawi Island towards La-ngu District when the GPS navigation system directed it off course. In an attempt to make a sudden U-turn at the junction, the bus was struck by the oncoming truck. The six-wheel truck, driven by 44-year-old Mr. Somsak Tehsahoh, was fully loaded with liquid rubber. The weight of the cargo reportedly made it difficult to brake or manoeuvre quickly. Mr. Somsak suffered severe injuries, including chest injuries, a fractured right ankle, a broken shin bone, and lacerations on his legs. Rescue workers used hydraulic equipment to free him from the wreckage before transporting him to Satun Hospital for emergency treatment. Three tourists from the bus also sustained injuries and were taken to Satun Hospital for medical care. Mr. Sitthichai Leelanon, village chief of Khuan Pho Subdistrict, stated that the truck’s full load likely contributed to delayed braking and stability issues. He also noted that the crash occurred at a busy junction, and the bus’s abrupt U-turn made the collision unavoidable. Police are conducting a thorough investigation to determine the exact circumstances leading to the accident. Legal proceedings will follow based on the findings. The incident serves as a reminder of the potential dangers of relying solely on GPS navigation systems and highlights the importance of caution when navigating unfamiliar routes. Passengers on the bus, who were en route to a tourist destination, expressed their relief that the injuries sustained were not more severe. -- 2025-01-25

  14. Picture captured from CCTV. A Vietnamese university student died after jumping from the roof of a police station in Bang Si Mueang, Nonthaburi. The incident occurred on 23 January, shortly after the man had filed a police report about losing money at a local hotel. The deceased, identified as Mr. Henh Nhi Ho, 32, was a student at a university in northern Thailand. He had visited the Bang Si Mueang Police Station at 17:00 to report the incident. After filing his complaint, he was seen smoking a cigarette near the station before disappearing for over 20 minutes. CCTV footage revealed that Mr. Henh walked to the rear of the building, climbed a communication pole to reach the third-floor rooftop, and removed his white long-sleeve jacket and orange cap. At 17:25 he jumped from the roof, sustaining critical injuries. Rescue teams from the Ruamkatanyu Foundation and Phra Nang Klao Hospital arrived promptly to provide assistance, but he succumbed to his injuries shortly after being admitted to hospital. Surveillance footage from 23 January at 16:54 showed Mr. Henh, wearing a white jacket over a white T-shirt, black trousers, and an orange cap, smoking near the station's staircase. He later walked to the back of the building and climbed to the rooftop. Before jumping, he left his jacket, cap, and mobile phone on the rooftop. On 24 January, forensic teams examined the scene, uncovering a red LM cigarette pack, a yellow Camel cigarette pack, a yellow lighter, and three used cigarette butts on the third-floor balcony. The rooftop also contained Mr. Henh's belongings. Investigators determined he climbed the communication pole because there is no direct stairway to the roof. Pol Col Somchai Jangthamma, chief of Bang Si Mueang Police Station, stated that the deceased had appeared distressed. After filing his report, he requested to smoke a cigarette but later disappeared. It is believed that stress over being asked to vacate his hotel room triggered the decision. "We have contacted the Vietnamese embassy and arranged for a translator to assist in coordinating with the victim's family. All officers present at the scene will be questioned, and we will thoroughly investigate the circumstances, including the victim's hotel room, for additional evidence," Pol Col Somchai said. 18. Picture from responders. Authorities in Lampang Province are investigating a fire that engulfed a 99-year-old wooden school building, causing damage estimated at over 2 million baht. The fire broke out late on the night of 23 January at Ban Mae Tha School, located in Mae Tha District. At 09:00 on 24 January, Pol Lt Col Phakphoom Wongchai, Deputy Inspector (Investigation) of Mae Tha Police Station, along with Lampang Forensic Division 5, district officials, and other relevant agencies, inspected the site of the fire. They were joined by Kasem Jaichan, Mae Tha District Chief, school director Chakrapong Kongnun, and teacher Phongsakorn Wandue, who was the first to witness the incident. Mr. Phongsakorn, who resides in the teacher’s accommodation next to the building, recalled hearing multiple loud noises around 23:30. Initially, he assumed someone was setting off firecrackers. However, when the electricity in his home began to flicker, he stepped outside to investigate. He discovered flames in the centre of the left-wing of the building, which was being used for storage. The fire spread rapidly, prompting him to alert the school director and call emergency services. The blaze destroyed four rooms, including a storage room that housed desks, chairs, musical instruments, educational materials, and books, as well as two classrooms and a library. The initial damage assessment is valued at more than 2 million baht. The affected building, constructed in 1926, was entirely made of wood and had been in use for nearly a century. The fire is suspected to have been caused by an electrical short circuit, although forensic officers are conducting further investigations to confirm the exact cause. This incident marks a significant loss to the school and the community, as the historic building had served generations of students in Mae Tha. -- 2025-01-25

  20. Picture courtesy of ECDD Authorities in Samut Prakan, have uncovered over one million sachets of vitamin C supplements and coffee imported from China, falsely bearing Thai Food and Drug Administration (FDA) approval numbers. The products were intended for online distribution and posed significant safety risks to consumers. The operation was led by Pol. Col. Thatphoom Jaruprachya, Acting Commander of the Economic Crime Suppression Division (ECDD), along with Pol. Col. Wichak Tarom, Deputy Commander of ECDD, Pol. Col. Chatchawan Chuchaiyarot, Superintendent of Division 2, and Ms. Sasiwee Narakorn, Deputy Director of the Food Division at the Thai FDA. The team raided a warehouse in Bang Bo district, Samut Prakan, following a court warrant. Inside, they discovered sachets of coffee, vitamin C supplements, and other dietary products, totalling over 1 million units. These items were labelled with counterfeit FDA registration numbers, copied from legitimate products to avoid detection. Pol. Col. Thatphoom revealed that the items had been smuggled into Thailand from China without undergoing customs clearance or meeting Thai FDA safety standards. These unregulated products were then prepared for sale on various online platforms. Investigators linked the warehouse to a Chinese-backed business entity involved in logistics operations. The suspected investors and business owners are currently based overseas. Authorities are now working to summon all individuals connected to the case for questioning and legal action. Pol. Col. Thatphoom emphasised the importance of consumer safety, stating, “This operation underscores the dangers posed by unregulated products to public health. We are determined to hold those responsible accountable.” Consumers are advised to remain cautious when purchasing dietary supplements and food products online, ensuring they are verified by the Thai FDA to avoid potential health risks. -- 2025-01-25

Swiss Dog Owner Defies Thai Beach Ban, Sparking Fear Among Locals and Tourists Picture courtesy of Khaosod A Swiss man has reignited controversy by defying a ban on walking his dogs at Suan Luang Beach, Bang Saphan district, despite previous attacks on tourists. 22. Picture courtesy of Khaosod A Swiss man has reignited controversy by defying a ban on walking his dogs at Suan Luang Beach, Bang Saphan district, despite previous attacks on tourists. The issue, which first drew widespread attention in August 2024, resurfaced after Mathias, the dog owner, was spotted on the beach on 20 January with four unleashed dogs, two large and two small. On 23 January, Thai and foreign tourists joined residents of Suan Luang Beach to lodge a formal complaint with the Pong Prasad Subdistrict Administrative Organisation (SAO). They reported that Mathias, who had been ordered to remove his dogs from the area while legal proceedings were ongoing, has continued to disregard the ban, raising fears for public safety. Residents provided video evidence of Mathias walking his dogs without collars or leashes. The footage also shows tourists and locals, including children, remaining stationary out of fear of another attack. Witnesses claim Mathias was indifferent to being filmed and even gestured at the cameras. Mr Thip Ruenkasem, 56, a local resident who recorded the video, expressed concern over the incident’s impact on tourism. “Since the first dog attacks, visitors have been hesitant to come to Suan Luang Beach. It has affected tourism revenue significantly,” he said. “The Pong Prasad SAO ordered Mathias to remove his dogs to prevent further incidents until the legal case is resolved. However, he has blatantly ignored the order and continues to walk his dogs here. This is a clear disregard for Thai law,” Mr Thip added. One of the victims of the previous incidents, Mr Rolf, a 76-year-old Swiss national, said he was bitten by one of Mathias’ dogs in August 2024. Following the attack, he returned to Switzerland, cutting his trip short. “I was relieved when I heard Mathias had been banned from keeping the dogs,” Rolf said. “But when I came back to Thailand, I was shocked to see him still walking the same dogs on the beach. This raises serious questions about the enforcement of the ban.” Mr Thanachai Buachuang, president of the Pong Prasad SAO, acknowledged the long-standing issue. He explained that while the SAO had mediated discussions and acted in accordance with the law, Mathias’ lawyer appealed the case. A subsequent investigation by the Department of Health, Zone 5, in Ratchaburi found no aggressive dogs at Mathias’ property, leading to the case being dropped. However, locals allege that Mathias hides his dogs during inspections. “When aggressive dogs are found, we intend to enforce the original order to remove them. But Mathias has evaded these measures, which has led to ongoing complaints,” Mr Thanachai said. The situation has reignited fears among tourists and locals, with many calling for stricter enforcement of the ban to ensure public safety and restore confidence in the area as a tourist destination. -- 2025-01-25
