The Sawang Bueng Sam Phan Thammasathan rescue team (Nong Chaeng unit) was alerted to the incident by the emergency department of Bueng Sam Phan Hospital. Upon arrival at the scene, they found two damaged vehicles, a silver LPG delivery pickup truck and a sugarcane lorry and debris scattered across the roadside. The force of the collision had caused the pickup to roll onto its side down an embankment, causing multiple LPG cylinders to be thrown across the crash site, creating a potentially hazardous situation for first responders and other road users. However, no leaks or fires were reported, and emergency services worked swiftly to secure the area and prevent further danger. Both engines of the Jeju Air Boeing 737-800 that crashed last month contained DNA from migratory ducks, according to a preliminary report released on 27 January. Authorities are still investigating the cause of South Korea’s deadliest aviation disaster, which left 179 of the 181 passengers and crew on board dead. The six-page report from South Korea’s Aviation and Railway Accident Investigation Board (ARAIB) identified the remains of Baikal Teals, a species of duck that migrates to South Korea in large numbers during the winter, in both engines of the ill-fated plane. The Jeju Air flight, which departed from Bangkok on 29 December 2024, made an emergency belly landing at Muan International Airport after overshooting the runway. It crashed into an embankment supporting navigation equipment, known as localisers, before catching fire and partially exploding. While the report provided details of the bird strike, it did not draw conclusions about why the aircraft attempted a sudden landing without deploying its landing gear or why the black boxes both the Cockpit Voice Recorder (CVR) and Flight Data Recorder (FDR) stopped recording four minutes before the crash. The engines were buried in the soil mound of the embankment, and the fore fuselage scattered debris up to 200 metres from the site, the report noted. Experts suggest the reinforced concrete and earth structure of the localiser embankment contributed significantly to the high fatality rate. Investigators plan to dismantle the engines, conduct detailed examinations of components, and analyse in-flight data, air traffic control records, and the bird strike evidence. The embankment and localiser equipment will also be closely scrutinised. These exhaustive investigations aim to establish the precise cause of the accident, the report stated. The victim, identified as Mr Somkiat 42, was found lying unconscious in the driveway of a two-storey house. He had sustained three gunshot wounds: one to the chest, one to the right arm, and one to the left wrist. Despite attempts to resuscitate him, he was pronounced dead at Paolo Samut Prakan Hospital shortly after. A semi-automatic 9mm handgun was found near the victim, with rounds remaining in the magazine. Six spent 9mm shell casings and two bullets were recovered from the scene. Witnesses and preliminary investigations revealed that Mr Somkiat had followed his ex-wife, Ms Juthaporn and her new partner, Mr Thitiwat 29, to the house. After arriving, Mr Somkiat exited his vehicle holding a firearm and approached the couple. According to Mr Thitiwat, Mr Somkiat chambered a round and attempted to aim the gun at him. Ms Juthaporn reportedly intervened in an attempt to de-escalate the situation. However, Mr Somkiat evaded her and continued his advance. In response, Mr Thitiwat retrieved his own firearm, a 9mm semi-automatic pistol, from a bag in his car and fired multiple shots at Mr Somkiat. Mr Thitiwat stated he acted in self-defence and could not recall how many shots he fired. He then fled the scene in panic but later contacted police and surrendered himself at midnight, waiting at the entrance to the housing estate. Officers recovered Mr Thitiwat’s car, a Toyota Altis, which contained the firearm used in the shooting. The weapon, along with Mr Somkiat’s gun, was confirmed to be legally registered. Both weapons and ammunition have been seized as evidence. Witnesses, including neighbours, reported hearing six gunshots but did not hear any prior argument. Forensic evidence, CCTV footage, and witness testimonies are being reviewed to determine whether Mr Somkiat fired his weapon during the confrontation.
