  16. Picture from responders. A massive forest fire on Khao Loi mountain in the Phayayen Subdistrict of Pak Chong District, Nakhon Ratchasima, has burned an estimated 1,000 rai of forest. Officials are racing to extinguish the flames, with helicopters from the Ministry of Natural Resources and Environment conducting water drops. The fire, which spans areas in Moo 3 Ban Nong Yang and Moo 9 Ban Sok Luk Phatthana, has proven difficult to access on foot due to the steep and loose rocky terrain. On 10 January, helicopters were dispatched from Kanchanaburi to assist in firefighting efforts. Using a private water source located 5 kilometres from the fire, the helicopters carry 1,000 litres of water per trip, completing a round trip in approximately five minutes. Operations are expected to continue over the next two days, with officials optimistic the fire will be fully extinguished within that time. Lieutenant General Boonsin Padklang, Commander of the Second Army Region, conducted an aerial survey of the affected areas and held a meeting with local authorities. He noted that while the fire is extensive, it is manageable with the current resources. However, he confirmed that additional aviation units will be called upon if the fire persists. Nakhon Ratchasima Deputy Governor Suraphan Silpasuwan clarified public concerns, explaining that the fire is in the Khao Sia Da A National Forest Reserve, not in Khao Yai National Park, as many had initially feared. “The fire is outside the boundaries of Khao Yai National Park,” he reassured, urging the public to remain calm. Efforts are ongoing, with authorities working tirelessly to bring the situation under control. 18. UPDATE Picture of the handover. Ekkalak “Sergeant Em” Paenoi, a 41-year-old former petty officer in the Royal Thai Navy, has been extradited to Thailand to face charges in the murder of Lim Kimya, a former member of the exiled Cambodia National Rescue Party (CNRP). Ekkalak stands accused of premeditated murder and firearm-related offences. After being formally charged, he reportedly confessed to the crime. The murder occurred on 7 January, and Ekkalak was apprehended the following day in Battambang, Cambodia. Lim Kimya was shot in what police believe to be a targeted attack. Ekkalak previously served as a technician with the Naval Electronics Department and was the commander of the 8th artillery unit. He graduated from the Naval Rating School but was discharged from service in 2023 for absenteeism. He had a record of disciplinary detentions in 2021 and 2022. Investigators revealed that Ekkalak did not have the murder weapon in his possession at the time of his arrest. Financial transactions linked to his account are now under scrutiny. On the day of the shooting, 30,000 baht was deposited into his account. Ekkalak reportedly used 22,000 baht to repay a police officer after pawning his firearm. Another 30,000 baht was transferred to him after the attack. Authorities are investigating whether these payments are connected to the crime. The police officer involved has denied any connection to the murder. Thai authorities are also pursuing another suspect, Kimrin Pich, a Cambodian national accused of identifying Lim Kimya to Ekkalak. According to reports, Kimrin traveled on the same bus as Lim Kimya before the attack and fled to Cambodia by air immediately afterward. The investigation continues as authorities probe the circumstances surrounding the killing and possible financial motives. 20. Picture from responders. A suspected thief died after falling from an abandoned building near a well-known temple in Hat Yai, Songkhla Province. On night of 10 January, Pol. Lt. Nimman Nikuno, an investigating officer at Hat Yai Police Station, received a report of a deceased individual found beside a derelict building on Soi 2, Phetkasem Road, near Wat Hong Pradittharam. Authorities, including a forensics team, patrol officers, a medical examiner from Hat Yai Hospital, and rescue workers from the Mitraphap Samakkee Foundation, were dispatched to the scene. Upon arrival, they discovered the lifeless body of a man, aged approximately 30–40 years, lying beside the abandoned building. His leg was draped over a barbed-wire fence, which had collapsed under his weight. Authorities believe he fell from the building, landing on the fence. The body showed signs of rigor mortis, suggesting he had been dead since the previous night. The man had no identification documents on him, but a bag found nearby contained items such as water taps, a screwdriver, pliers, and a flashlight. According to police, the deceased is suspected to have been stealing from the building. The night before, the building’s caretaker reported hearing dragging noises inside and alerted the authorities. Upon investigation, police found a sack of items, including scrap metal, that had been moved from the fifth floor to the second floor, but no suspect was located at the time. It is believed the man may have fallen while attempting to climb down the side of the building to escape. His body has been sent to Hat Yai Hospital for further examination. Authorities are working to identify the deceased and notify his family. -- 2025-01-12

A worker involved in an underground electric cable installation project was critically injured after falling 10 metres into a large construction shaft, in Nonthaburi Province during the early hours of the morning of January 11. At approximately 04:30, officers from Muang Nonthaburi Police Station received a report of the incident, which occurred at the construction site near Soi Tiwanon 10, Tiwanon Road, Talat Khwan Subdistrict, Mueang District. Rescue teams from the Poh Teck Tung Foundation were dispatched to the scene to assist with the emergency. The site, part of an ongoing underground power line installation project, had exposed shafts, with concrete slabs removed to allow workers to access the shaft. According to reports, the incident occurred as the team was preparing to wrap up their work, which had been underway from 22.00 the previous evening until 05.00. The injured worker, identified as Mr. Lae, 30, a Cambodian national, was found at the bottom of the 10-metre-deep shaft. He reportedly sustained injuries from the impact with the shaft floor. Fellow workers had descended to check on his condition while awaiting assistance. Rescue personnel, assisted by construction workers, utilised a crane and a rescue basket stretcher, to extract the injured man. The rescue operation lasted approximately 30 minutes. First aid was administered at the scene before the worker was transported to a nearby hospital for further treatment. A co-worker revealed that the incident occurred as Mr. Lae accidentally stepped back and fell into the shaft while helping to lift a concrete slab into place to restore the road surface. The incident is under investigation. -- 2025-01-12
  22. Picture from responders. A 72-year-old man, a highly respected agricultural leader in Phatthalung, was fatally shot in an attack on a rural road in Khuan Khanun district. Police are investigating the incident and suspect the motive may be linked to a recent drug-related arrest in the area. The victim, identified as Mr. Phob, was the owner of a prominent agricultural learning centre and a salak orchard. He was also recognised as an outstanding farmer in Khuan Khanun district. The attack occurred on Soi Bo Pla in Ban Khuan Tin, Moo 5, Pantae subdistrict. Police, led by Pol. Lt. Col. Wichai Amphun, investigator at Khuan Khanun Police Station, and Pol. Lt. Col. Hanphon Ramduang, deputy superintendent of investigations, were alerted at 18:30. When officers arrived, they found only a pool of blood at the scene. Mr. Phob had already been rushed to Khuan Khanun Hospital but succumbed to his injuries shortly after due to six gunshot wounds to his torso, back, neck, and hand. According to preliminary investigations, locals reported hearing six gunshots but initially mistook the sounds for firecrackers. Concerned when her husband did not return home, the victim’s wife went to look for him and discovered him lying unconscious in a pool of blood on the road leading to his orchard. His motorcycle with a sidecar was found nearby, bearing bullet damage to its rearview mirror. Neighbours assisted in transporting him to the hospital. Mr. Phob was described as a hardworking, kind individual who had no known conflicts with anyone. However, police suspect the shooting may be related to an earlier arrest of a local man for drug and firearm offences. Authorities believe the suspect may have blamed Mr. Phob for tipping off the police. The individual in question has since fled the village, and police are actively pursuing leads to locate and apprehend him. The investigation continues, with police determined to bring the perpetrator to justice. -- 2025-01-12

Preliminary reports indicated that four people were inside the building at the time of the fire. Tragically, despite rescue attempts, none of the occupants survived.
