  1. A brutal domestic altercation on October 8, left a woman dead and her husband critically injured in what appears to be a crime of passion in Bangkok’s Thawi Watthana District. The incident unfolded near Phutthamonthon Sai 2 Soi 27. Responding to reports of a violent dispute, police arrived at the scene and discovered a Toyota Vios parked near the end of the alley, its engine running with loud music blasting from inside. The front doors were open, and the seats reclined. Inside, officers found Mr. Natthaphon, 42, from Nakhon Pathom, lying on top of his wife, Ms. Chonthicha, 36, from Bangkok, who was dead in the passenger seat. She had a hole in her forehead from a crossbow injury and her body was covered in blood. Mr. Natthaphon had a bloodstained knife still stuck in his body and the crossbow was found on his wife’s body. Ms. Chonthicha’s body bore over 20 stab wounds. She was dressed in a work uniform, and her left arm was hanging out of the car. The couple were married, and police suspect that Mr. Natthaphon’s jealousy was the motive for the crime. Emergency personnel provided first aid to Mr. Natthaphon who had used the knife on himself, was later transported to Rajphiphat Hospital in a critical condition. In an initial statement to police, Mr. Natthaphon revealed that he had become suspicious of his wife having an affair. Earlier that day, he had hidden in the trunk of her car as she left their home in Nong Khaem. Ms. Chonthicha, a public bus driver, had arranged to meet her lover at a nearby restaurant. When she arrived, Mr. Natthaphon emerged from the trunk and took control of the car, driving it into the alley where the violent altercation erupted. Eyewitness Ms. Ratchanee, 35, recounted that she saw the car drive erratically into the alley, colliding with walls on both sides. Eventually, it stopped in the middle of the road, and she heard a woman screaming for help. She saw the man stabbing the woman repeatedly, but no one dared to intervene as he shouted that it was a family matter. “He kept saying, ‘She came here to meet her lover. She must die,’” Ms. Ratchanee recalled. Adding to the confusion, a nearby film crew was shooting a movie just 20 metres away, causing some witnesses to initially think the scene was part of the filming. However, once the situation calmed, it became clear that the incident was tragically real. Investigators discovered that Ms. Chonthicha had been frequently seen dining with a fair-skinned man at the restaurant near her workplace, including the day before the incident. It is believed that Mr. Natthaphon had long suspected the affair and chose to hide in the car’s trunk to confront his wife with her lover. As the husband appeared the lover fled the scene before the violence unfolded. Police are continuing their investigation, reviewing CCTV footage from the area, and awaiting Mr. Natthaphon’s recovery for further questioning. Picture from responders. -- 2024-10-09

The collision occurred around 12:40 on the Roi Et-Mahasarakham road, near the entrance to Ban Por Phan in the Muang Roi Et district. Local police received reports of the crash and quickly dispatched rescue teams equipped with hydraulic tools to the scene. Upon arrival, authorities found an Isuzu D-Max pickup truck, gray in color, severely damaged on the right side. 4. A former soldier armed with multiple firearms opened fire at a school in the Chaiyaphum Province, injuring two construction workers on October 8. The event unfolded around 13:00 at the Special Education School in Ban Lao, Muang District, prompting a swift response from local law enforcement. Police Colonel Prasith Premkamol, head of the Muang Chaiyaphum Police Station, led a tactical unit comprising over 50 officers to the scene after receiving reports of a maniacal gunman targeting the school. Upon arrival, they discovered two men injured in the area near the teachers’ housing. The victims, identified as construction workers, had sustained gunshot wounds to the torso and hip. Emergency medical teams promptly transported them to a nearby hospital for urgent care. As the situation escalated, officers quickly cordoned off a residence in Ban Lao after learning that the shooter, identified as Sergeant Major Palang Rat (32), was barricaded inside with an arsenal that included a long-barreled rifle, a shotgun, and a 9mm handgun. Authorities attempted to negotiate with the suspect, broadcasting appeals for him to surrender and even inviting his mother to help persuade him, but their efforts were in vain. Chaiyaphum Governor Anan Nakniyom arrived to oversee the response and continued to call for the suspect’s peaceful surrender through loudspeakers. However, after assessing the ongoing threat, tactical officers donned body armor and advanced to the rear of the house. During their approach, a single gunshot rang out, prompting officers to employ an electric stun gun. The device was deployed twice, incapacitating Rat, who subsequently collapsed. Following his capture, Rat was taken to Chaiyaphum Hospital for treatment. Initial investigations revealed that Rat had earlier discharged his shotgun at a school janitor who was performing cleaning duties, forcing the worker to flee for safety. Later in the day, Rat directed his fire toward the teachers’ housing and student dormitories, injuring a construction worker in the process. Rat has a history of violent behavior, having previously engaged in altercations with fellow soldiers while stationed in a military camp, leading to multiple gun-related incidents. As a result, he was discharged from military service and had been residing in a home behind the school. Authorities continue to investigate the circumstances surrounding the incident. 7. An incident occurred at approximately 15.00 on October 8, when a section of the Yom Riverbank in Klong Krajong Subdistrict, Sukhothai Province, collapsed, causing a house to be swept into the river. Three people were trapped under the debris. While one person was rescued, a 10-year-old girl remains missing. The collapse, which took place near a family home, resulted in three residents being buried under mud and debris. Emergency teams from various agencies, including Sawankhalok civil volunteers, Bang Kaeo Sukhothai Rescue Unit, Ruamkatanyu Foundation, and Thepnimit Rescue Team, worked to locate the victims. At 19.00 rescue workers successfully pulled Mr. Pitak Khemthong, 45, from the rubble. He was found buried in the mud, suffering from hypothermia. Although conscious, he required continuous oxygen support and was immediately rushed to Sawankhalok Hospital for further treatment. Sadly, the rescue operation also recovered the body of 52-year-old Mr. Rachen Kamthong, who was found lying beside Mr. Pitak, pinned down by wooden beams. However, the search for the missing 10-year-old girl, identified as Chutima Kamthong, has yet to yield results. Darkness and safety concerns forced authorities to halt the search as power had been cut off in the area. Suwankhalok District Senior Officer Papon Sorntham held a meeting with rescue teams to plan the resumption of the search for Chutima in the morning of October 9. Rescue worker Atthaya Nakanrit from Thepnimit Rescue shared that digging through the thick mud is extremely challenging, with hands being the only viable tool for excavation in the unstable soil. Homeowner Panumas Bamnet, 33, described the moment the house suddenly collapsed into the river while the family was packing up their belongings. Despite the chaos, rescuers managed to save the family’s dog, which was later returned to relatives for care. The search and rescue operation will continue as teams remain hopeful of locating the missing girl body.. Picture from responders. 9. UPDATE Police Await Blood Test Results in Songkhla Family Mass Shooting Case Songkhla police are awaiting blood test results to determine if sedatives were used in the shocking mass shooting of a family of four. The victims were members of the family of Chaiyan Khuan-Seng, a former Songkhla municipal councilor. His wife allegedly shot him, their 16-year-old son, and 18-year-old daughter before turning the gun on herself on October 7. The motive is believed to be linked to financial troubles, as the wife had previously confided in her sister about their mounting debts. Investigators suspect that sedatives might have been used, as all three victims were shot while sleeping, with pillows placed over their heads. There were no signs of struggle, raising concerns about whether they had been incapacitated before the shooting. As of October 8, the family’s home in Soi 49/2, Saiburi Road, Songkhla Municipality, remained quiet, with relatives gathering belongings for the funeral. The bodies of the four victims are currently at Songkhla Hospital, and will be moved to Laem Sai Temple for funeral rites. Neighbours reported hearing only a single gunshot, which they believe was the final one when the wife took her own life. They were unaware of the earlier shots, likely muffled by the pillows. Neighbors also described Chaiyan as a friendly, outgoing person who was well-known in the community, while his wife was more reclusive. The police are now waiting for toxicology results from Songkhla Hospital to confirm if sedatives played a role in the events. -- 2024-10-08

  22. A fire broke out on the evening of 6 October, involving an electric vehicle (EV) submerged in floodwaters at a home in Chiang Mai. The flames also involved a nearby pickup truck, causing significant damage. Rescue officials reported that two other vehicles were also affected by the heat of the fire, sustaining partial damage. The Chiang Mai Charity Rescue Association and fire crews responded to the emergency after being alerted to the situation. Upon arrival, they discovered the source of the fire was the submerged vehicles including an electric vehicle. Initially using water from buckets in the flood water, they managed to control the fire, before a single hose-line was able to reach the fire after being dragged through the flooding. Despite the difficulty of working in waterlogged conditions with flood levels reaching around 30 centimetres the fire was extinguished in approximately 20 minutes. A total of four vehicles were impacted: two were completely destroyed by the fire, the EV and the pickup truck, while two additional vehicles suffered partial heat damage. The fire occurred in a residential parking area that had been inundated by floodwaters. The homeowners had already evacuated due to the severe flooding, and authorities are now investigating the exact cause of the fire, the first vehicle burning was believed to be the EV, but there was no evidence of thermal runaway from the Li-ion battery. Further inspections by police and forensic teams are expected to take place once water levels drop, allowing full access to the vehicles. Pictures from responders. -- 2024-10-08
