UPDATE 93-Year-Old Woman Found Drowned 1 Kilometre from Her Home The body of a 93-year-old woman, suffering from dementia, was discovered in the Sakae Krang River, approximately 1 kilometre from her home. The woman, identified as Nang Pao, a resident of Nam Tok village, Sakae Krang Subdistrict, Mueang District, Uthai Thani Province, had gone missing earlier. On October 11, police received a call reporting the discovery of Nang Pao’s body. Rescue workers were dispatched to retrieve the body from the river. It was found floating face down by Mr. Thawin, a 57-year-old villager who was assisting in the search. Mr. Thawin had set out in a boat from his own dock when he spotted the body and notified the authorities. After being retrieved, the body was taken to Wat Uposatharam Temple for an autopsy, which confirmed that the cause of death was drowning. It is believed that she had been in the water for more than 16 hours before her body was discovered. The family has been notified, and her remains will be returned to them for funeral rites according to local customs, amidst the deep sorrow of her relatives and neighbors. Before her death, Nang Pao had expressed feelings of wanting to die and exhibited a habit of wandering towards water. Her daughter frequently had to rescue her, and neighbours had also stepped in to help, as Nang Pao’s age had caused her to become increasingly forgetful. Picture from responders. -- 2024-10-11

The Bangkok Mass Transit Authority (BMTA) has ramped up safety inspections on its fleet of 809 NGV-powered buses, aiming to boost public confidence in the safety of public transportation. Deputy Minister of Transport Surapong Piyachote has emphasised the importance of stringent safety standards and ensuring that all buses meet strict operational requirements. BMTA Director Kittikarn Jomduang Jaruwanpolkun confirmed that the fleet consists of 486 blue low-floor air-conditioned NGV buses and 323 orange Euro-II air-conditioned NGV buses. Safety measures have been put in place to mitigate the risk of fire incidents on the buses. The safety protocol includes three key components: 1. Regular Vehicle Inspections: All buses undergo routine inspections to ensure they meet safety standards before entering service. Maintenance checks focus on essential equipment such as fire extinguishers, emergency doors, and window hammers, as well as the condition and expiration dates of gas tanks. 2. Emergency Response Training: BMTA staff, including bus drivers and conductors, are regularly trained on how to respond to emergencies, particularly fire outbreaks. Training covers assisting passengers during incidents, safely evacuating the bus, using fire extinguishers and window hammers correctly, and coordinating with emergency services such as hospitals and rescue teams. 3. Compensation for Victims: In cases of injury or death, BMTA has procedures in place for compensating victims, supported by motor vehicle accident insurance and protection under Thailand’s Road Accident Victim Protection Act. BMTA has also produced training videos simulating fire emergencies to educate staff, as well as public information videos demonstrating the use of safety equipment. These initiatives are designed to enhance passenger confidence in the public transport system. Pictures courtesy of BMTA. -- 2024-10-11

A 93-year-old woman with dementia has gone missing after crawling into the Sakae Krang River while her daughter, who had briefly fallen asleep, was unaware. Search efforts are ongoing, but strong currents have hindered recovery attempts. At 16:00 on October 10, Uthai Thani Governor Teerapat Katchamat, along with Provincial Police Chief Pol. Maj. Gen. Narongdej Saksomboon, local authorities, and rescue teams, arrived at a residence in Ban Nam Tok, Sakae Krang subdistrict, Uthai Thani, where the incident occurred. Ms. Pao (surname withheld), 63, the missing woman’s daughter, reported that her mother, Ms. Chanaporn (surname withheld), had gone missing at around 12:30. CCTV footage captured the elderly woman crawling out of the house shortly after Ms. Pao had fallen asleep. Ms. Pao explained that her mother had been suffering from severe memory loss and, in the past, had expressed a desire to die. “She often said she didn’t want to live anymore,” Ms. Pao shared. She added that despite her mother’s inability to walk, she would crawl if she wanted to go somewhere. Ms. Pao admitted that she had fallen asleep for about 10 minutes, and when she woke, she found her mother missing and feared that she had crawled into the river, which is just 10 metres from their home. Rescue divers from the Uthai Thani Provincial Administration Organisation and the Uthai Thani Rescue Foundation have been searching the river but have so far been unable to locate the elderly woman. Authorities have also searched around the home in case Ms. Chanaporn had crawled elsewhere, but CCTV footage showed only her exit from the house. Due to the camera’s limited range, it is unclear if she reached the river, though authorities believe she likely did. Neighbours confirmed that despite her inability to walk, Ms. Chanaporn was able to crawl quickly and likely made her way into the river. The Sakae Krang River is currently experiencing high water levels and strong currents, leading the search teams to believe that her body may wash some way downstream. A murder-suicide unfolded in Muang district of Nakhon Ratchasim, as a 60-year-old man shot and killed his former lover, a 40-year-old fruit smoothie vendor, before turning the gun on himself following a failed attempt to reconcile. Police from the Nakhon Ratchasima City Police Station were alerted to the incident at a three-story apartment complex in Muang Wai Subdistrict. Upon arrival, officers found the lifeless body of Ms. Korn, 40, from Chonburi, outside her ground-floor apartment. She had been shot multiple times, sustaining wounds to her shoulder, chest, abdomen, and thigh. Approximately five metres away, the body of Mr. Direk, 60, from Ayutthaya, was discovered with a gunshot wound to the right temple. A 9mm handgun was found next to his body. Forensic teams, along with medical personnel from Maharat Nakhon Ratchasima Hospital, were called to examine the scene, and the bodies were later transferred for further autopsy. According to Ms. Ratchanee, a friend of Ms. Korn, the victim had been selling fruit smoothies at the Night Market in Korat. A hardworking woman, she had been supporting her ailing mother. Ms. Korn had previously been involved with Mr. Direk, whom she referred to as “Pa,” but had distanced herself after learning that he had a family. CCTV footage showed Mr. Direk arriving alone at the apartment, where he knocked on Ms. Korn’s door. The footage captured Ms. Korn attempting to flee moments after letting him inside, but Mr. Direk chased her down, firing several shots before taking his own life with the same gun. Authorities believe the motive was jealousy, as Mr. Direk’s attempts to reconcile with Ms. Korn were unsuccessful. The case is still under investigation. Picture from responders. -- 2024-10-11

In a coordinated effort led by the Krai Thong rescue team, a crocodile named “Jao Tui” has been safely captured after it escaped from its enclosure and was found in a temple pond behind Kalayanabhiram Temple in Sahatsakhan district, Kalasin province. Jao Tui, an 8-year-old crocodile approximately 2 metres long, is known for its docile nature and is not considered dangerous. The incident occurred around 13.00 on October 9, when local officials, including Ms. Waewta Narathat, the district chief of Sahatsakhan, and Mr. Boonthong Paocharoen, the provincial fisheries officer, responded to reports of the crocodile’s escape. With the assistance of disaster prevention and relief officers from Non Buri subdistrict and local villagers, they successfully cordoned off the area around the pond, where the crocodile was spotted swimming. Mr. Boonthong, the Kalasin provincial fisheries officer, confirmed that there are 297 registered crocodiles in the province, belonging to 13 owners. In Sahatsakhan district alone there are three owners keeping eight crocodiles. The escaped crocodile was fully registered and under official supervision. He noted that capturing Jao Tui presented some challenges due to high water levels in the old stream that feeds the pond, but the team used a wide net to carefully enclose the area and ensure a safe and non-violent capture. “The temple’s pond is surrounded by high walls, and there was no real threat to local residents. However, given the concerns of the community, we decided to take immediate action to alleviate any fears,” Mr. Boonthong stated. Contrary to earlier rumors circulated in local warning groups about a larger 4-metre crocodile aged 25 years, Jao Tui is much smaller and less intimidating. The crocodile has been living at the temple for about 8-10 years, having been donated by a temple patron, and has a calm and non-aggressive temperament. By 16.00 authorities successfully retrieved Jao Tui from the pond, bringing an end to the brief concern for the local community. Picture of the capture. -- 2024-10-10

A domestic incident in Nonthaburi ended in the death of a 57-year-old man on October 9, following a heated argument with his ex-wife, leaving him dead and her severely injured. The incident occurred at a townhouse in Prachanivej 3, Muang District, Nonthaburi. Police officers from the Rattanathibet Police Station responded to a report of a violent stabbing at around 20:00. Upon arrival, they found two individuals in critical condition. Rescue workers attempted CPR, but 57-year-old Sirat, a grilled pork vendor, succumbed to his injuries at the scene. His ex-wife, 56-year-old Dao, was rushed to Krung Thai Hospital in Pak Kret with severe stab wounds to her chest. Inside the two-story house, police found Sirat’s body on the ground floor, lying in a pool of blood. He had been stabbed five times, three wounds to his chest, one to the left side of his abdomen, and one to the right. Near the bedroom, officers discovered a folding knife and a pair of bloodstained scissors, along with another kitchen knife near the entrance. Vachara, the couple’s 33-year-old daughter, explained that her family of four, including her brother, had been living in the house together. She described her father as a jealous man. One month prior, her parents had officially divorced, yet they continued to live under the same roof. The night of the incident, her mother had returned home from work, leading to a heated argument behind a locked door. Vachara, stated she was unable to determine who initiated the violence, but broke down the door and helped her brother carry their mother out of the house, while their father was unconscious in a pool of blood inside. Arm, a 37-year-old neighbour, recalled hearing Dao’s cries for help during the altercation. Moments later, he saw her being helped out on the street, holding her chest, bleeding profusely. Nearby residents immediately called for emergency services. Arm mentioned that although the couple occasionally argued, it never seemed out of the ordinary, just typical marital disputes. He was not close to the family, being only a neighbour. Police are continuing their investigation to determine the full details of the incident. Picture from responders. -- 2024-10-10

A fire broke out early morning of October 10, at a prominent university in the Thanyaburi area, destroying two minibuses and a van parked in the campus garage. The blaze, which was reported at 06:00 quickly engulfed all three vehicles. The fire is suspected to have been caused by a faulty battery in one of the minibuses, an issue that had been reported several times without action. Pol. Lt. Pornchet Prommune, an investigator from Pratunam Chulalongkorn Police Station, responded to the incident along with three fire trucks from Rangsit Municipality. Firefighters worked for 40 minutes to extinguish the flames, which had already destroyed the vehicles by the time they arrived. The vehicles, two minibuses and one van, were parked closely together in the campus parking lot. A 57-year-old security guard who was on duty described hearing a loud explosion from the middle minibus and noticing no fire, Initially thought nothing of it and returned to his post. Another security guard then ran over to inform him of the fire, prompting both guards to rush to the scene. The guard noted that the middle minibus had been left with the battery charging overnight, a practice that had been a source of concern due to a deteriorating battery. Despite multiple reports about the battery’s condition, no action had been taken to replace it. A nearby resident, identified as Mr. Mongkol, corroborated the guard’s account, stating that the middle vehicle was frequently left to charge for extended periods. Mongkol, who was in his room at the time, was alerted by the sound of the fire and rushed outside to see the vehicles already ablaze. He mentioned that five vehicles were parked in the lot, but only two could be moved in time. The remaining three vehicles, including the minibus with the faulty battery, were completely destroyed. Pol. Lt. Pornchet has begun an investigation, documenting the scene and collecting evidence. The forensic team is expected to conduct a detailed examination to determine the exact cause of the fire. The incident has raised concerns about the university’s response to safety warnings and the potential risks posed by faulty equipment left unchecked. Further investigations will seek to clarify the cause of the fire and whether negligence played a role in the incident. -- 2024-10-10
