  2. Police have arrested on October 5, a notorious conwoman, known as “Nam Nueng,” who had been posing as a high-ranking official to infiltrate the Thai parliament. Dressed in a white uniform adorned with official insignia, she mingled with members of parliament (MPs) and senators, pretending to be part of the political elite. The suspect, a 47-year-old woman identified as Suwadee (surname withheld), was apprehended following a police investigation after a warrant was issued by the Dusit District Court. She was arrested on charges of impersonating a public official by wearing a uniform to deceive others into believing she had official authority. The Metropolitan Police, led by Pol. Lt. Gen. Thiti Saengsawang and his investigative team, tracked Suwadee to a hotel in the Lat Krabang district. In her possession were multiple disguises, including a white official uniform with royal decorations, a black cloak embroidered with the words “Parliament,” and another with “Office of the Prime Minister.” Suwadee’s criminal history spans over a decade, with 14 prior fraud cases to her name, including scams involving construction contracts, investments in businesses, and more recently, impersonating government officials. Her deceptions have netted her millions of baht from unsuspecting victims across the country. Suwadee’s fraudulent activities date back to 2010, starting with small-scale scams such as issuing bad cheques and pretending to be a contractor. However, by 2017, her tactics evolved, and she began impersonating high-profile figures, claiming to be the niece of a prominent university rector and enticing victims to invest in fictitious business ventures. By 2021, she was posing as an assistant to former Prime Minister Prayuth Chan-ocha, duping individuals into believing she could secure government positions for them. Among her numerous scams was the infamous “Lung Tu Plus Card” scheme, where she swindled a victim out of 1.7 million baht, promising high returns through an exclusive investment. Her most recent con involved her wearing an official uniform to gain access to parliament, where she posed for photos with well-known MPs and senators. The turning point in Suwadee’s latest scheme came during a Senate meeting on 20 August 2024, when a senator raised concerns about a suspicious individual wandering the halls of parliament. The senator’s alert led to a police investigation, eventually uncovering Suwadee’s real identity and criminal past. After fleeing, she sought refuge with a famous fortune teller, moving between hotels in Bangkok to evade capture. However, police surveillance led to her arrest on 5 October. Investigators found official uniforms, political party ID cards, and a Toyota Camry she had used to stash her disguises. During questioning, Suwadee denied all charges, claiming she had merely borrowed the uniform from a friend to take photographs for her future campaign as an MP. She insisted that a senator, with whom she had personal disputes, was behind the allegations. Despite her denials, police have confirmed that Suwadee has a long history of fraud. Although she claims to have resolved many of her cases by repaying victims, she is still facing legal battles, including a recent conviction for the “Lung Tu Plus” scheme, for which she was sentenced to three years in prison, currently under appeal. Authorities are now taking steps to ensure such security breaches do not occur again, with parliament tightening its regulations on access to the building. Suwadee remains in custody as the investigation continues, and she will likely face additional charges for her most recent crimes. Picture courtesy of Khaosod. -- 2024-10-06

  5. An elderly man was struck and killed while crossing the road. The 71-year-old man was first hit by a motorcycle, causing him to fall, before being fatally run over by a car. The driver of the car fled the scene. Residents have long complained that the area is dangerously dark due to broken streetlights that have been neglected for some time. The accident occurred at 20:20 on October 5, on Highway 3056, near Wat Khok Mayom in Khan Ham Subdistrict, Uthai District, Phra Nakhon Si Ayutthaya. Police officer Lieutenant Rittai Waliittikul from the Uthai Police Station responded to the call, along with rescue workers from Ayutthaya Ruamjai Foundation. Upon arrival, they found the scene dimly lit, as streetlights were not working. The body of Boonlert Treechai, 71, lay in the middle of the road. Nearby, approximately 30 metres away, a motorcycle with the license plate from Ayutthaya was found toppled over. The motorcyclist had already been taken to the hospital with injuries. Witness Sarath Phetsrimong, 21, reported that while driving in the area, he saw the motorcycle hit the victim, who was crossing the road. At that moment, a black Toyota Vios sped by and ran over the man’s body before fleeing towards the Uthai-Bang Pa-In intersection. Surin Pan-Iam, a local delivery rider familiar with the area, mentioned that he often saw the elderly man, the owner of a nearby accommodation block, walking around. He said the road is extremely dark, and the streetlights had been out for a long time, creating a hazardous environment with frequent accidents. Police have begun reviewing CCTV footage from nearby shops. The footage shows the victim crossing the road when the motorcycle hit him, causing both the victim and the motorbike to crash. Sparks flew as the motorcycle skidded across the road, and shortly after, the car ran over the victim. Authorities are now working to locate the hit-and-run driver for further legal action. 7. A man speeding in his car crashed into multiple power poles in Ladprao Soi 48 early on the morning, of October 6, bringing down a total of 11 poles. Authorities discovered a firearm and drugs inside the vehicle. The Metropolitan Electricity Authority estimates it will take two days to restore power. At 06:20.Lieutenant Satien Phimthong, an investigative officer from Sutthisan Police Station, received a report of a car crash involving downed power poles and a driver trapped inside the vehicle in Soi Ladprao 48, Intersection 16, Huai Khwang District, Bangkok. Police Colonel Porntep Chalermkiat, Superintendent of Sutthisan Police Station, along with officials from the Metropolitan Electricity Authority and volunteers from the Ruamkatanyu Foundation, responded to the scene. Upon arrival, authorities found a white Honda City ZX with a Bangkok license plate that had lost control and crashed into two power poles. The front of the car, including the bumper, hood, and roof, was severely damaged, with the poles collapsing onto the vehicle. Rescue volunteers managed to extract the driver, identified as 28-year-old Mr. Asan Naya from Yala Province. He sustained minor injuries and appeared intoxicated. A search of the vehicle’s console revealed a 9mm handgun and a quantity of illegal drugs. Officers from the forensic department were called to the scene to collect evidence. Mr. Asan was taken into custody and brought to Sutthisan Police Station for further questioning and to face charges. The crash not only damaged the two poles directly hit by the vehicle, but the tension from the fallen wires also caused nine more poles in the area to topple, leaving a total of 11 poles down. The resulting damage caused a power outage in the area, and access in and out of the soi was completely blocked. Initial investigations revealed that Mr. Asan had been driving alone at high speed, entering the soi from Ladprao Road and heading towards Sutthisan Road before losing control and crashing into the power poles. 12. The situation unfolded at the Thai-Lao Friendship Bridge border as a gas leak was detected in a Bangkok-registered taxi parked near the checkpoint. Thanks to the swift actions of authorities, the potential disaster was avoided before the gas ignited. The incident occurred on October 5, when officials from the emergency radio centre 1669 in Nong Khai province were alerted to a strong smell of gas emanating from a vehicle parked at the Tha Udom market near the 1st Thai-Lao Friendship Bridge, in Mueang Nong Khai District. Fearing the risk of fire or explosion, police coordinated with VR Nong Khai Rescue and the local fire department, deploying to the scene. Upon arrival, authorities found the source of the leak, a green and yellow, Bangkok-registered taxi locked and parked amid several other vehicles in a lot primarily used by tourists traveling to Vientiane. The gas smell filled the area, prompting officers to spray water to suppress the fumes while they worked to open the vehicle’s doors and inspect the gas tank’s valve. The vehicle belonged to 57-year-old Mr. Jira from Nakhon Phanom province. Panomphrai, the parking lot attendant, explained that the taxi is a regular at the facility, usually left there for two to three days at a time. He mentioned that around 18.00., a faint smell of gas was noticed, but its source remained unclear. Once the source was identified, authorities were immediately notified. Panomphrai suggested that moving forward, safety protocols might need to be enhanced, potentially requiring gas-powered vehicles to be inspected or ensuring spare keys are available in case of emergencies. Jaras Sudsith, a 1669 radio operator involved in the crisis response, stated that upon arrival, their primary challenge was determining the type of gas involved, which was quickly identified as LPG. Without access to the car’s owner, responders had to maintain safety by spraying water to dilute the vapour and prevent ignition. After some time, they were able to unlock the car and check the gas valve, finding it closed. However, residual gas in the area required further monitoring to ensure it was fully dissipated. Thanks to the timely intervention, the situation was safely controlled, and no injuries or damages were reported. Picture from responders. -- 2024-10-06

Mr. Noppadol (surname withheld), 18, a friend of the victims, stated that the girls had run out of fuel and had called him to help push their motorcycle home. On the way, they found a fuel vending machine and refueled, riding alongside each other afterward. As they neared the scene, they encountered the pickup truck heading toward them in the wrong direction. “I shouted for them to watch out,” Noppadol recalled. “I managed to swerve, but the truck hit them head-on before they could react.” Adding to the tragedy, Noppadol reported hearing the driver of the truck, Mr. Sitthichai (surname withheld), 35, say, “Serves them right for driving the wrong way,” shortly after the crash. Sitthichai later claimed he did not remember the details of the crash, stating he had just finished working at a beer event in the Ratchapruek area and had not slept for two days. He admitted to drinking two bottles of beer but was unsure whether he had fallen asleep while driving. A breathalyser test revealed Sitthichai’s blood alcohol level was 119 milligrams per cent, well above the legal limit. He was immediately taken into custody. Police confirmed that Sitthichai will face charges in connection with the incident, while the bodies of the victims have been sent for forensic examination. Picture from responders. -- 2024-10-06

  20. A car showroom owner, struggling with financial difficulties and unable to secure a bank loan, took his own life inside his vehicle on Phahonyothin Road in Khlong Luang District, Pathum Thani. On the morning of October 4, Lieutenant Prachaya Kokun of Khlong Luang Police Station responded to reports of a suicide near kilometre marker 45 on the outbound side of the road. Investigators from the Khlong Luang Police, forensic experts from Pathum Thani Provincial Forensic Unit, and medical personnel from Thammasat University Hospital were dispatched to the scene. The victim, a 38-year-old man (name withheld), was found inside a red Suzuki sedan registered in Bangkok. He had sustained a fatal gunshot wound to his right temple. A .38 caliber Walther handgun was found beside him in the driver’s seat. The discovery was made by traffic police officers during rush hour, who noticed the car parked by the roadside and approached to check. Upon investigation, they found the man unresponsive, slumped over toward the passenger seat, with blood visible on his head. They immediately alerted investigators. The victim’s father revealed that his son was facing financial difficulties related to his car showroom business. After repeated attempts to secure a bank loan had failed, the pressure mounted. The night before the incident the victim had asked his father for a gun, claiming he needed it for self-defence due to concerns about a new neighbour. Despite the father’s belief that the financial issues were minor, it seems the ongoing stress pushed his son to a breaking point. The father confirmed that the .38 Walther handgun belonged to him. Lieutenant Prachaya recorded evidence at the scene before the victim’s body was transferred to Thammasat University Hospital for further examination. Picture from responders. -- 2024-10-06

  22. In an operation on October 4, local immigration authorities in Samut Prakan apprehended 22 foreign nationals working illegally without the necessary permits. This crackdown comes in response to complaints received from the public regarding the presence of undocumented workers selling fresh vegetables and food in local markets. Under the directive of Pol. Lt. Gen. Itthipol Itthasanranchai, the Chief of Immigration Bureau, and assisted by Pol. Maj. Gen. Phanthana Nuchanart and Pol. Maj. Gen. Nattakorn Praphain, officers from the Samut Prakan Immigration Office conducted an investigation at two locations: the Bang Phli Housing Market and a roadside market near a local company in Bang Phli District. The investigation was prompted by reports submitted to the Ministry of Interior’s complaint centre, which alerted authorities to the illegal activities of foreign workers operating without work permits, thus potentially competing for local jobs. During the operation, officers from the Samut Prakan Immigration Bureau, alongside officials from the Provincial Employment Office, uncovered several Cambodian and Myanmar nationals. Those arrested reportedly earned 500 baht a day, worked without days off or overtime pay, and operated their own stalls from 01.00 to 11.00 daily. The arrested individuals face charges under the Immigration Act of 1979, Article 81, for being in the country without permission, as well as violations of the Foreign Workers Management Act of 2018 for working without proper permits. Pol. Col. Sumet Janwongpitak, Chief of the Samut Prakan Immigration Office, urged the public to report any suspicious activity involving foreign nationals to assist in ongoing enforcement efforts. 24. Local authorities in Mae Phrik District, Lampang Province, used a backhoe to evacuate a heavily pregnant woman after a flash flood destroyed the only bridge connecting her village to the outside world. The woman, nine months pregnant and nearing her due date, was safely transported across the swollen stream to a hospital. The incident occurred in Ban Huai Khinok, Mae Phrik Subdistrict, after heavy rains caused a flash flood at around 04:00 on October 4, which washed away the village’s bridge. The destroyed bridge left more than 250 residents from 108 households stranded, as it was the sole access route into and out of the village. District Chief Piyawut Phithakboriban, who also heads the Mae Phrik Disaster Relief Centre, led the rescue team. As water levels in the Mae Phrik stream began to recede, the team deployed a backhoe to the site. Using the backhoe’s bucket, they transported 31-year-old Ms. Bum, who was nine months pregnant, to safety. She was then transferred to an ambulance and taken to Mae Phrik Hospital in preparation for her scheduled delivery on October 8. The rescue operation saw the pregnant woman seated inside the backhoe’s bucket, which was carefully maneuvered across the stream by the driver. The successful evacuation was a collective effort involving local officials, volunteers, and the Mae Phrik rescue team. Though the water levels are decreasing as the rains subside, the villagers remain isolated due to the destroyed bridge. Emergency machinery has been approved and is en route to the site, with construction on a temporary bridge expected to begin on October 6. The backhoe was provided by Mr. Montri Thanasitsunthorn, the head of Mae Phrik Subdistrict, along with assistance from local authorities, police, rescue teams, and volunteers. Efforts are ongoing to deliver food and water to the stranded residents while bridge repairs are underway. Picture courtesy of AmarinTV. -- 2024-10-06 RPReplay_Final1728133999.mp4
