In a coordinated effort led by the Krai Thong rescue team, a crocodile named “Jao Tui” has been safely captured after it escaped from its enclosure and was found in a temple pond behind Kalayanabhiram Temple in Sahatsakhan district, Kalasin province. Jao Tui, an 8-year-old crocodile approximately 2 metres long, is known for its docile nature and is not considered dangerous. The incident occurred around 13.00 on October 9, when local officials, including Ms. Waewta Narathat, the district chief of Sahatsakhan, and Mr. Boonthong Paocharoen, the provincial fisheries officer, responded to reports of the crocodile’s escape. With the assistance of disaster prevention and relief officers from Non Buri subdistrict and local villagers, they successfully cordoned off the area around the pond, where the crocodile was spotted swimming. Mr. Boonthong, the Kalasin provincial fisheries officer, confirmed that there are 297 registered crocodiles in the province, belonging to 13 owners. In Sahatsakhan district alone there are three owners keeping eight crocodiles. The escaped crocodile was fully registered and under official supervision. He noted that capturing Jao Tui presented some challenges due to high water levels in the old stream that feeds the pond, but the team used a wide net to carefully enclose the area and ensure a safe and non-violent capture. “The temple’s pond is surrounded by high walls, and there was no real threat to local residents. However, given the concerns of the community, we decided to take immediate action to alleviate any fears,” Mr. Boonthong stated. Contrary to earlier rumors circulated in local warning groups about a larger 4-metre crocodile aged 25 years, Jao Tui is much smaller and less intimidating. The crocodile has been living at the temple for about 8-10 years, having been donated by a temple patron, and has a calm and non-aggressive temperament. By 16.00 authorities successfully retrieved Jao Tui from the pond, bringing an end to the brief concern for the local community. Picture of the capture. -- 2024-10-10

A domestic incident in Nonthaburi ended in the death of a 57-year-old man on October 9, following a heated argument with his ex-wife, leaving him dead and her severely injured. The incident occurred at a townhouse in Prachanivej 3, Muang District, Nonthaburi. Police officers from the Rattanathibet Police Station responded to a report of a violent stabbing at around 20:00. Upon arrival, they found two individuals in critical condition. Rescue workers attempted CPR, but 57-year-old Sirat, a grilled pork vendor, succumbed to his injuries at the scene. His ex-wife, 56-year-old Dao, was rushed to Krung Thai Hospital in Pak Kret with severe stab wounds to her chest. Inside the two-story house, police found Sirat’s body on the ground floor, lying in a pool of blood. He had been stabbed five times, three wounds to his chest, one to the left side of his abdomen, and one to the right. Near the bedroom, officers discovered a folding knife and a pair of bloodstained scissors, along with another kitchen knife near the entrance. Vachara, the couple’s 33-year-old daughter, explained that her family of four, including her brother, had been living in the house together. She described her father as a jealous man. One month prior, her parents had officially divorced, yet they continued to live under the same roof. The night of the incident, her mother had returned home from work, leading to a heated argument behind a locked door. Vachara, stated she was unable to determine who initiated the violence, but broke down the door and helped her brother carry their mother out of the house, while their father was unconscious in a pool of blood inside. Arm, a 37-year-old neighbour, recalled hearing Dao’s cries for help during the altercation. Moments later, he saw her being helped out on the street, holding her chest, bleeding profusely. Nearby residents immediately called for emergency services. Arm mentioned that although the couple occasionally argued, it never seemed out of the ordinary, just typical marital disputes. He was not close to the family, being only a neighbour. Police are continuing their investigation to determine the full details of the incident. Picture from responders. -- 2024-10-10

A fire broke out early morning of October 10, at a prominent university in the Thanyaburi area, destroying two minibuses and a van parked in the campus garage. The blaze, which was reported at 06:00 quickly engulfed all three vehicles. The fire is suspected to have been caused by a faulty battery in one of the minibuses, an issue that had been reported several times without action. Pol. Lt. Pornchet Prommune, an investigator from Pratunam Chulalongkorn Police Station, responded to the incident along with three fire trucks from Rangsit Municipality. Firefighters worked for 40 minutes to extinguish the flames, which had already destroyed the vehicles by the time they arrived. The vehicles, two minibuses and one van, were parked closely together in the campus parking lot. A 57-year-old security guard who was on duty described hearing a loud explosion from the middle minibus and noticing no fire, Initially thought nothing of it and returned to his post. Another security guard then ran over to inform him of the fire, prompting both guards to rush to the scene. The guard noted that the middle minibus had been left with the battery charging overnight, a practice that had been a source of concern due to a deteriorating battery. Despite multiple reports about the battery’s condition, no action had been taken to replace it. A nearby resident, identified as Mr. Mongkol, corroborated the guard’s account, stating that the middle vehicle was frequently left to charge for extended periods. Mongkol, who was in his room at the time, was alerted by the sound of the fire and rushed outside to see the vehicles already ablaze. He mentioned that five vehicles were parked in the lot, but only two could be moved in time. The remaining three vehicles, including the minibus with the faulty battery, were completely destroyed. Pol. Lt. Pornchet has begun an investigation, documenting the scene and collecting evidence. The forensic team is expected to conduct a detailed examination to determine the exact cause of the fire. The incident has raised concerns about the university’s response to safety warnings and the potential risks posed by faulty equipment left unchecked. Further investigations will seek to clarify the cause of the fire and whether negligence played a role in the incident. -- 2024-10-10

A 33-year-old man, under the influence of methamphetamine and homemade liquor, set his own house ablaze in Lopburi. When questioned, he stated indifferently that there were plenty of places to sleep. At 11:00 on October 9, Pol. Lt. Col. Waree Soisonsa of the Muang Lopburi Police Station received a report of a man in a drug-induced frenzy who had set his house on fire in the Thongphet Community, Nong Muen Village, Khao Sam Yot Subdistrict, Lopburi. Officers, including Pol. Lt. Chanint Janwimol, crime prevention inspector at Muang Lopburi Police Station, and fire units were quickly dispatched to the scene. Firefighters extinguished the fire, but the wooden house was completely destroyed, leaving only the foundations. Mr. Teerayot (surname withheld), the 33-year-old homeowner, was found pacing around the scene with a bottle of homemade liquor in hand. Neighbours pointed him out as the arsonist. Appearing agitated and incoherent, he admitted to setting the fire, saying he was tired of living indoors and that there were many other places he could sleep. Initially, the police observed Mr. Teerayot as he appeared to calm down. When they attempted to arrest him, however, he resisted, demanding to eat and smoke a cigarette before complying. The officers, having given him ample time, refused his requests. Angered by the refusal, Mr. Teerayot attempted to flee. Police surrounded and subdued him after a brief struggle. He was later placed in custody, cursing the officers. Mr. Teerayot’s 65-year-old mother, Mrs. Jumpee, revealed that her son had a history of violent behavior fueled by alcohol and drugs. He had previously served time for assault and illegal possession of a firearm. After his release, he fell in with a group of methamphetamine users in the village, becoming addicted to both alcohol and drugs. According to Mrs. Jumpee, her son often became violent when intoxicated, shouting loudly and threatening to burn down his own home and those of relatives. She added that the entire neighbourhood lived in fear of his outbursts. Mrs. Jumpee expressed hope that her son would be placed in rehabilitation or face long-term imprisonment, stating that she did not regret the loss of her son’s freedom as long as it ensured the safety of others. The police have charged Mr. Teerayot with possession and use of a Category 1 narcotic (methamphetamine), with further charges related to arson pending investigation. In a bid to continuously improve safety standards, Pattaya authorities conducted a comprehensive fire safety drill on school buses, simulating a realistic fire emergency. The exercise aimed to prepare drivers, school staff, and students for potential fire incidents and ensure that everyone knows how to respond swiftly and effectively. The drill, organised in collaboration with the Pattaya City Disaster Prevention and Mitigation Office, local fire departments, and school authorities, was held at a designated training area with specially equipped school buses. The exercise simulated a situation where a fire breaks out while the bus is in transit, a scenario that could pose significant dangers to students if not handled correctly. Mr. Pisit Udomrangsee, the Chief of Pattaya Disaster Prevention, emphasised the importance of this proactive approach. “Our goal is to ensure that everyone involved in school transportation—from drivers to students—knows exactly what to do in the event of a fire. Preparedness and practice are key in minimising injuries and saving lives during such emergencies,” he said. During the drill, students were taught how to safely evacuate a bus in the event of a fire. Firefighters demonstrated the proper use of fire extinguishers and how to open emergency exits. Drivers were also instructed on how to assess a fire’s severity and take the necessary steps to keep students safe while waiting for emergency services. The simulation included the controlled use of smoke to create a realistic atmosphere, testing the ability of bus personnel to maintain calm and guide students to safety under pressure. The drill also tested response times for local firefighters and medical teams, who arrived at the scene and performed mock rescues to ensure the city’s emergency services can respond swiftly. Safety drills such as these are a critical component of Pattaya’s ongoing efforts to enhance public safety, especially for vulnerable groups such as schoolchildren.. “We are committed to keeping our children safe, and this drill is a part of a larger initiative to improve school safety. From fire prevention to traffic safety, we want to ensure that our schools and transport systems are equipped to handle any situation,” said Pattaya City Mayor’s Office. The city plans to continue these safety drills regularly and will extend them to other public transport systems in the near future. This proactive stance aims to build a culture of safety awareness, ensuring that both students and the broader community are well-prepared in case of emergencies. Parents, who were invited to observe the drill, expressed their appreciation for the city’s efforts. “It’s reassuring to know that the authorities are taking such comprehensive steps to ensure the safety of our children,” one parent commented. The incident occurred on October 9 when an 8-year-old boy drowned while playing with friends at a water overflow weir near the Phanthumrat Bridge in Klong Lan District, Kamphaeng Phet. The boy, identified as a student from a local community school, was playing near the water when he accidentally fell in. According to police reports, the incident happened around 15.00 when the boy and three friends were playing near the edge of the weir. Witnesses described how the boy slipped and fell into the rapidly flowing water, which was notably deeper than one metre due to recent heavy rainfall in the area. The swift current created a dangerous whirlpool that made it impossible for him to resurface. Upon realising their friend was missing, the other children quickly ran to nearby adults at a food stall for help. However, the strong current made it too risky for anyone to enter the water. They then called emergency services for assistance. Responders from the Klong Lan Subdistrict and the Kamphaeng Phet Volunteer Rescue Foundation swiftly mobilized over 20 volunteers and divers to the scene. The area, which serves as a local flood control structure, was crowded with onlookers as rescue efforts commenced. After approximately one hour of searching, the rescue team located the boy’s body. The atmosphere was filled with sorrow as the child’s mother and relatives were present, grieving at the sight of the recovery. Local authorities conducted a preliminary investigation and reiterated warnings to the community about the dangers of playing in or near hazardous water areas, especially during heavy rains. They urged parents to keep their children away from risky water sites to prevent similar tragedies in the future. The boy’s body was taken to Klong Lan Hospital for an autopsy before being released to his family. Picture from responders. -- 2024-10-10

At around 18:25 local reporters were alerted to the incident involving a double-decker air-conditioned bus on the Rayong-Mukdahan route. The accident claimed the life of Mr. Suphanai, a 19-year-old bus attendant. He was struck by the very bus he worked on as it was reversing out of its parking bay.
