  2. Boat Explosion and Fire Off Phuket Coast: Flamingo Lady 2 Sinks, Damage Estimated at 4.3 Million Baht A boat, the Flamingo Lady 2, exploded and caught fire near Ao Por Grand Marina in Pa Khlok, Thalang District, Phuket, before sinking into the sea. The incident occurred shortly after the boat had returned from dropping off passengers, and the damage is initially estimated at 4.3 million baht. The boat, operated by Captain Jaroon, had departed from Ao Por Pier at 10:00, transporting 22 tourists to Koh Naka Yai. After safely dropping off the passengers, the boat continued its return journey with only two crew members onboard: the captain and a machinery operator. At approximately 10:35, between Koh Naka Yai and Koh Raet, the boat’s right engine malfunctioned, causing a loss of control over the engine’s speed. The overheated engine produced sparks that ignited fuel vapors, leading to an explosion and fire. Both the captain and the machinery operator attempted to extinguish the fire, but it quickly spread. Captain Jaroon suffered minor leg injuries and was transported to Thalang Hospital. Police Colonel Nikorn Chuthong from Thalang Police Station, along with other officers and several agencies, deployed a speedboat to inspect the site. However, the boat had already been engulfed in flames and was swept away by the wind before sinking into the sea, at a depth of approximately 3 to 4 metres. Officials plan to further assess the wreck once the tide recedes. The witness, Mr. Ali, 43, stated, “The boat was moving by itself, and the engine suddenly shut down. When the captain checked the engine, it exploded due to overheating. I rushed to help after the fire started but could only watch as the boat burned.” Further investigations into the cause of the explosion and assessment of the damage will continue. -- 2024-10-03

  4. In a heated meeting at the House of Representatives on October 3, the Transport Commission grilled officials from the Department of Land Transport regarding the recent fatal bus fire on a school trip. The bus, equipped with modified gas tanks, suffered a catastrophic gas leak that led to the tragedy. Jirut Wisalchit, the Director-General of the Department of Land Transport, expressed his condolences to the families of the victims and provided a timeline of the events. Jirut stated that he had visited the scene after the fire was extinguished and had engineers inspect the vehicle. According to Cheep Nomsean, Director of the Automotive Engineering Office, the inspection revealed that the right rear door mechanism of the bus was functional, and the bus was a single-decker with a lower compartment for luggage. No tyre explosion was found; instead, it was discovered that one of the 11 gas tanks had come loose, causing a gas leak from a connecting pipe. Furthermore, the front axle had broken, dragging against the road and sparking the fire. The Director-General also noted that another bus with similar gas tank installations was identified and would be inspected immediately. The Transport Department has issued five directives in response to the incident: 1. Inspect all 13,426 public and private buses using CNG within 60 days. 2. Raise the standards for non-scheduled public buses, which currently lack stringent regulations . 3. Collaborate with the Ministry of Education and schools nationwide to ensure that all vehicles used for student and elderly transport are thoroughly inspected before each trip. 4. Introduce laws mandating that staff on buses are trained in emergency response and passenger assistance. 5. Implement regulations requiring operators to inform passengers of emergency procedures, similar to those on airlines. During the meeting, Nakhon Sawan MP Peeradech Siriwansan and Khon Kaen MP Chatchawan Apirakmankong raised concerns about the number of gas tanks on the bus, questioning why five extra tanks had been installed beyond the original six. They also pointed out the failure of inspectors to notice these modifications during registration and vehicle checks. Jirut confirmed that the bus had indeed been modified with five additional tanks, and the investigation would determine responsibility for the oversight. The eighth tank, which was not part of the official inspection, was found to be the one leaking gas. Further questions were raised about the vehicle’s age, as it was first registered in 1970 and re-registered in 2018 after extensive modifications. The Commission asked whether the vehicle’s true age should be counted from its initial registration or its more recent reconfiguration. The Department of Land Transport has suspended the operator’s license for the company involved and confirmed that the driver’s license would also be suspended pending the investigation. If found guilty, both will face severe penalties, including permanent revocation of their licenses. The investigation remains ongoing, with authorities working to establish the full circumstances behind the incident. Police forensic teams will release additional findings, and legal action will follow based on the results. In response to ongoing concerns, Chiang Mai MP Cheongchai Chaleerin added that CNG tanks, while difficult to ignite, could pose risks if leaks occurred, and stressed the need for thorough inspections of all similar vehicles. The vessel, identified as a foreign-owned sailboat, was floating near Ko Rad island when the incident occurred, with emergency crews dispatched to the scene. 11. A project owner fatally shot his female business partner on October 2, before turning the gun on himself at an office in Sai Noi District, Nonthaburi. The incident is believed to be linked to financial troubles. Sai Noi police responded to a report of two individuals found dead around 18:00. at a sales office in a local housing project in Thawee Watthana Subdistrict. Accompanied by forensic doctors and volunteer responders, the authorities discovered the tragic scene. Mr. Suphot, 56, the owner of the housing project, was found seated in his office chair with a gunshot wound to his right temple, the bullet having exited through the left and lodged in his computer screen. A 9mm handgun lay on the floor beneath his chair. Nearby, Ms. Kanokwan, 54, was found lying on the floor in a pool of blood, having been shot in the head. Both were business partners, with Mr. Suphot managing the project while Ms. Kanokwan handled accounting. An employee, identified as Ms. Bee, recounted to reporters that Mr. Suphot had dismissed the staff around 17:00, stating he needed to have a private discussion with Ms. Kanokwan. Later, when staff returned to collect car keys, they knocked on the office door but received no response. Seeing bullet casings, they summoned security, who discovered the two bodies and alerted the police. Ms. Bee further stated that she had not observed any prior conflict between the two, though she recalled hearing two loud bangs, which she initially thought were related to bird-scaring gunshots, a common occurrence in the nearby fields. Ms. Kanyapat, the niece of the deceased Ms. Kanokwan, disclosed that her aunt had been sent to work at the project to recover several hundred thousand baht lent to Mr. Suphot. However, her aunt had received only small payments for her work. The two had previously argued about the unpaid debt during meetings. Mr. Khiao, a neighbour, described Mr. Suphot as a kind and calm individual. However, in recent years, Mr. Suphot had been struggling financially, particularly since the COVID-19 pandemic. During a conversation last month, Mr. Suphot had expressed his frustration with the worsening economic conditions. While Mr. Khiao had known Mr. Suphot for over a decade, he was not familiar with Ms. Kanokwan and did not know the specifics of their relationship. Authorities are conducting further investigations to determine the exact circumstances surrounding the deaths. Picture from responders. -- 2024-10-03

  14. A 54-year-old woman lost her life after her car plunged into the Trang River on October 2. The vehicle, a white Honda Brio, was found submerged at a depth of 5 metres. The accident occurred near a sluice gate in the Nong Trut subdistrict of Trang’s Muang district. Rescue divers from the Kusonsathan Trang Foundation, along with the Pitak Cheewit and Sawang Phakdee Trang rescue teams, arrived at the scene around 16:00 . It took over an hour to recover the woman’s body, which was discovered in the driver’s seat. The victim has been identified as Mrs. Puangrat (last name withheld), a resident of Khok Lo subdistrict, Trang. CCTV footage from the sluice gate area showed the white car crossing a bridge and parking by the roadside before suddenly veering off-camera and into the river. Investigators speculate that the woman may have accidentally engaged the wrong gear while practicing driving along the riverbank, an area with little traffic, causing the vehicle to plunge into the river. Eyewitnesses reported seeing the rear of the car emerge above the water before it gradually sank within 3-4 minutes. The car was approximately 3 metres from the riverbank, and it was noted that the driver’s window was half-lowered at the time of the accident.
