  3. In an incident driven by a bitter debt dispute, a 60-year-old woman shot and killed a well-known local radio DJ in Chana, Songkhla Province. The victim, 40-year-old DJ Wanida Thongyod, was a popular host on a community radio station and a TikTok personality with a large following in the area. The incident occurred on October 3 at a laundromat in Saphan Mai Kaen, where the suspect, identified as Ms. Pornpimon “Nee” Sawatroj, confronted the DJ over a longstanding debt issue. Armed with a .38 revolver, Ms. Pornpimon fired multiple shots at the victim, striking her in the back of the head. After the shooting, the suspect took the wounded DJ to the hospital, where she later succumbed to her injuries. According to police reports, the dispute revolved around a 200,000-baht loan, which Ms. Pornpimon claimed had gone unpaid. DJ Wanida had guaranteed the loan for a friend, a local teacher, but despite numerous attempts to settle the debt, the matter remained unresolved. On the day of the shooting, tensions escalated, leading to the fatal altercation. Eyewitnesses described hearing three gunshots followed by screams. Ms. Pornpimon was seen conversing with her daughter outside the laundromat before her son-in-law, a police officer, arrived to assist her. Upon realising the gravity of the situation, the officer helped transport the wounded DJ to the hospital. Surveillance footage from nearby cameras captured the incident. DJ Wanida’s sister, Ms. Khwanrudee Thongyod, expressed shock and sadness, stating that her sister had always treated Ms. Pornpimon as a maternal figure. The two women had been close, and Ms. Pornpimon had been a strong supporter of Wanida’s online presence, often referred to as a “fan mother” for her role in encouraging the DJ’s success on TikTok. Despite their previous close relationship, the debt dispute proved too much, ultimately leading to the tragic shooting. Ms. Pornpimon later surrendered herself to local authorities, admitting to the crime and claiming she acted out of anger over the unpaid loan. She now faces charges of premeditated murder and illegal possession of a firearm. Police have denied bail for Ms. Pornpimon, fearing further unrest as family and friends of the victim express outrage over the senseless killing. Picture captured from CCTV. -- 2024-10-06

  5. A group of monks and novices in Chiang Mai were forced to carry a coffin through deep floodwaters on October 5, to ensure the cremation could proceed. The event, which took place at Wat Pa Phaeng temple, highlighted the ongoing challenges brought by severe flooding in the region. Floodwaters have continued to rise in Chiang Mai, inundating key areas, including Lanna Hospital and Kawila Military Hospital. Many residents and travelers were left stranded, particularly at the Arcade Bus Station, as roads became impassable due to high water levels. The flooding, caused by the overflowing Ping River, is now being reported as the worst in recorded history. A social media post from Wat Pa Phaeng’s Facebook page detailed the difficult journey of moving the deceased’s body from the ceremonial hall to the crematorium. In the accompanying photos, monks and novices could be seen wading through the water, carrying the coffin through the flooded temple grounds. The temple is located near Muang Mai Market, an area severely affected by the floodwaters from the Ping River. Despite the adversity, the monks’ dedication to their duty underscored the strength of the community in the face of the natural disaster. Meanwhile, authorities are continuing to monitor the rising water levels as they work to provide aid to the flood-stricken areas. Residents of Chiang Mai continue to post calls for assistance as more areas are submerged. Many communities have been cut off, waiting for emergency relief. -- 2024-10-06 RPReplay_Final1728133563.mp4

Police Lieutenant Nevin Suntuwanik, along with rescue teams from the Sawang Boriboon Foundation and a water rescue unit, were dispatched to the scene after receiving reports of a child drowning. The pond, which is about 3-4 metres deep, required divers to recover the body of the young boy, identified as Montree, nicknamed “Pok,” from the bottom of the pond. A security officer at the site, Mr. Watcharapong (surname withheld), aged 47, recounted that two children came running to him, shouting that their friend had fallen into the water. 9. A 17-year-old suspect died after escaping police custody and jumping into the Khlong Saen Saeb canal while being escorted to the Minburi Juvenile Court. Authorities launched a search operation before discovering his body submerged in the water. On October 5, Police Lieutenant Colonel Pichitpol Ratchakom from Minburi Police Station received a report of a 17-year-old male suspect who had escaped custody while being transported to Minburi Juvenile Court for a review of his arrest, which had occurred on October 4 at 13:50. Police Colonel Krit Komnoi, the superintendent of Minburi Police Station, ordered an investigation and visited the scene. It was revealed that officers from Minburi Police Station were escorting the young suspect, who was facing charges of nighttime theft, to the court for a formal detention order. While in custody in front of the Minburi Criminal Court, the suspect broke free from the officers, as he was not restrained due to his juvenile status. He fled the area, running toward Khlong Saen Saeb behind Minburi School. Police officers and security personnel from the Minburi Criminal Court pursued him closely and alerted patrol units and investigative teams to assist in the chase. During the escape, the suspect jumped into Khlong Saen Saeb. A security officer from the court jumped in after him, but before the suspect could reach the opposite side of the canal, he submerged and disappeared underwater. 13. Early on the morning of October 5, at approximately 08:00, the Khamchai unit of the Ruamjai Mukdahan Rescue Association responded to a report of a body found in a remote forest area near the entrance to Huai Rai Reservoir 2. The report, which originated from a concerned local, led rescue teams to a secluded area in Khamcha-i District, sparking a prompt response from both rescue and law enforcement agencies. Upon reaching the scene, the rescue team found a blue-black Honda motorcycle with the license registered in Chonburi, parked near the forest entrance. Following a search through the forest the lifeless body of a woman was discovered hanging from a tree by a rope, approximately 200 metres from the motorcycle, Initial investigations by the rescue team and officers from the Phueng Daet Police Station suggest that the woman had been deceased for at least seven days, based on the state of the body. In the motorcycle a ID for Ms Napa, aged 40 was found, which is believed to belong to the victim, but visual confirmation was not possible due to the state of decomposition. The advanced state of decomposition has made it difficult to determine the exact cause of death immediately, though foul play has not been ruled out. Forensic examination at the scene was conducted in conjunction with the on-call physician from Mukdahan Hospital. Following the examination, the body was handed over to the Dong Mon emergency medical services team, who transferred the remains to Mukdahan Hospital for an autopsy. The police are continuing their investigation to determine the circumstances that led to this tragic event. At this stage, they have asked the public to come forward with any information that may assist how she came to be in this isolated location. Picture from responders. -- 2024-10-06

  15. Police in Pattaya were called to a local hotel after a Thai female guest refused to leave her room upon the expiration of her rental period. The woman, under the influence of drugs, locked herself in the hotel bathroom, prompting a 30-minute negotiation before she was apprehended. Authorities discovered cannabis and drug paraphernalia in the room. The incident occurred on October 4, when officers from Pattaya City Police Station, along with municipal officials from the Public Order Division, were summoned to the scene after the hotel’s staff reported the disturbance. The female guest, who had rented a room for five days, refused to vacate when her stay ended, barricading herself in the bathroom. Hotel employees had attempted to convince her to leave but were unsuccessful. The woman grew increasingly agitated, yelling and screaming inside the bathroom. After 30 minutes of negotiations failed to calm her down, officials called in a locksmith to unlock the bathroom door, allowing them to enter and arrest her. The woman appeared disoriented and was unresponsive to questioning, exhibiting signs of drug use. Authorities found cannabis and a smoking device in the room. Initial reports suggest the woman had violated several hotel rules during her stay, including drug use, and had become aggressive when asked to leave. 23. UPDATE Two Elephants Found Dead After Being Swept Away in Chiang Mai Floods The hopes of rescuing two missing elephants were dashed on October 5, as their lifeless bodies were discovered after being swept away by floodwaters in Mae Taeng District. The elephants, identified as Pang Fasai and another as yet unnamed, were found entangled in debris after being carried downstream by the flood. The Elephant Nature Park had earlier shared on social media that one elephant, Pang Fasai, had been swept towards a water diversion tunnel in an attempt to escape the rising floodwaters. Rescue teams and local mahouts launched an immediate search, but tragically, the elephants were found near debris in the vicinity of Sibsan Resort, Mae Taeng. Veterinarians and officials are on-site to conduct further investigations. The confirmed death of Pang Fasai, an elephant from a local sanctuary, has devastated the community. Prior to this, it was reported that another elephant, believed to be Pang Mae Kho, a disabled elephant also from the same sanctuary, had gone missing. The identity of this second deceased elephant is still under verification, though officials believe it to be Pang Mae Kho. Earlier reports of an elephant named Pang Mae Boon Chang being found dead were later corrected. The blind elephant, also from the sanctuary, had been successfully rescued from the floodwaters the previous evening and is now safe. So far, the flooding in Chiang Mai has claimed the lives of three elephants. Rescue teams continue their search for several other missing elephants, including ten untethered and aggressive males from a nearby sanctuary. Officials from the Elephant Conservation Centre in Lampang are working with local authorities in a race against time to find and rescue these remaining elephants before further tragedy strikes. -- 2024-10-05

  25. In an incident that shocked the local community, a baby boy was found abandoned on Jomtien Beach, Pattaya. The infant, left alone and crying out in hunger, was discovered just in time by concerned residents who quickly intervened. The baby, believed from his looks, to be of mixed heritage, was found wrapped in a blanket and placed near the edge of the beach, seemingly forgotten by those who were supposed to care for him. The incident occurred in the early hours of October 5, when locals passing by heard the distressed cries of the baby. Upon investigation, they found the infant lying alone on the sand, visibly hungry and cold. His body trembled as he cried for milk, but there was no sign of his parents or anyone else nearby who might have been responsible for him. Thankfully, one of the good Samaritans, a local woman who lives near the beach, acted quickly. She picked up the infant and provided some basic care while others alerted the authorities. Soon after, paramedics arrived at the scene and transported the baby to a nearby hospital for a full medical check-up. Initial reports suggest that the baby is doing well and is receiving proper care at the hospital. Authorities have also launched an investigation to track down the parents or guardians responsible for the abandonment. The police are currently reviewing CCTV footage from the area to trace any possible leads, and they are asking for witnesses or anyone with information to come forward. The investigation continues as authorities try to piece together how such an event could happen on the shores of Jomtien Beach. Picture from responders. -- 2024-10-05
