Picture captured from CCTV. A 64-year-old man was brutally stabbed to death on September 25, in Surat Thani following an altercation with a neighbour over a longstanding dispute. The victim, identified as Mr. Ratphon (last name withheld), was found dead at the scene with 27 stab wounds inflicted by a fruit knife. The incident occurred in front of a house in Tha Chang District, Surat Thani Province, at around 21:30. Police from Tha Chang Police Station were called to investigate the scene. The location was a two-story house where officers discovered two empty bottles of liquor, several soda bottles, and drinking glasses on a wooden table. Nearby, under the rear wheel of a white Toyota pickup truck, the lifeless body of Mr. Ratphon was found with a yellow-handled fruit knife lodged in his chest. Preliminary investigations revealed that the assailant, Mr. Chalermphon (last name withheld), 53, had fled the scene after the stabbing. Witnesses reported that the two men had a history of conflict over a car crash. Attempts to resolve the matter failed, leading to continued tension between them. Ms. Sunet (last name withheld), 73, a neighbour , stated that both men lived alone and frequently drank alcohol. On the night of the incident, Mr. Chalermphon had been drinking with friends outside his house, while Mr. Ratphon, who was known for heavy drinking, was at home. The exact cause of the confrontation remains unclear, as Ms. Sunet had already gone to bed. CCTV footage from a nearby house captured Mr. Ratphon parking his Mazda pickup truck at 21:22 and entering his home briefly before returning outside. The footage then cut off, but at 21:26, Mr. Ratphon’s body was seen lying next to the vehicle, with a figure running into the alley. According to police interviews, the altercation escalated after Mr. Ratphon retrieved a machete from the back of his truck and attacked Mr. Chalermphon. In self-defense, Mr. Chalermphon allegedly used a fruit knife to stab Mr. Ratphon multiple times, resulting in his death. Mr. Chalermphon was also injured, sustaining a serious wound, which almost severed his arm, and was taken to Tha Chang Hospital by a friend. Police later arrested him and are pursuing charges. The investigation is ongoing. -- 2024-09-25

Picture from responders. Chiang Mai's Provincial Police Radio Centre received a report of a fire at 01.00 on September 25, at a commercial building near Kad Luang Market, located in the Chang Moi Subdistrict of Mueang Chiang Mai District. Emergency services, including the Chiang Mai Disaster Prevention and Mitigation Department and rescue teams, were immediately dispatched to the scene. The fire broke out in a three-story commercial building, with thick smoke and flames rapidly spreading across the second and third floors. Firefighters promptly called in additional fire trucks and requested that the Provincial Electricity Authority temporarily cut off the power supply to the area to prevent further hazards. Crews worked for nearly two hours before successfully containing the blaze. Four adjacent units were damaged by the fire. Fortunately, no injuries or fatalities were reported. The total value of the damage is still under assessment by authorities. Eyewitnesses recounted hearing a loud explosion while they were sleeping, followed by shouts of "Fire!" When they rushed outside, they saw flames and thick smoke consuming the buildings and spreading quickly to neighboring units. Residents had to flee the area to escape the advancing fire. Initial investigations suggest that the fire may have been caused by an electrical short circuit. Police and fire officials are continuing to investigate the exact cause of the blaze. Adding to the chaos, light rain was falling at the time of the fire, and the Ping River’s water level had risen significantly. Floodwaters have already begun to overflow into parts of Chiang Mai city, especially in areas adjacent to the river. -- 2024-09-25

Picture from Khoasod. The teaching staff and parents of Wat Daeng School in Nonthaburi were left heartbroken after the tragic death of the acting school director, Phutthawat Kongwong, aged 56, who fell from the roof of the school building while attempting to repair storm damage. The incident occurred on September 22, when Phutthawat climbed onto the roof to fix tiles that had been torn off by heavy rain and winds, causing water leaks into classrooms. Thongsai Yenprasert, President of Nonthaburi Provincial Administrative Organisation (PAO), confirmed the incident. Phutthawat, who was also the deputy director of Wat Salak Nua School, was serving as the acting director of Wat Daeng School in Sai Ma Subdistrict. He fell from the fourth floor while trying to repair a hole in the roof. Phutthawat was rushed to Phra Nang Klao Hospital but succumbed to his injuries passing away at 12:30 on September 24. Suntaree Kaewpetch, a kindergarten teacher, described Phutthawat as a cheerful and kind-hearted leader who often treated his colleagues as family. On the day of the accident, a Sunday, he had come to the school, as he often did on weekends, to ensure the school's safety and inspect any damage. Upon learning from a teacher that storm winds had damaged the roof, Phutthawat and another teacher went to check the situation on the fourth floor. Seeing the large gap in the roof caused by the storm, he decided to fix it himself, fearing that the problem would worsen if left unattended, especially with students expected to return on Monday. Despite warnings from colleagues, Phutthawat climbed a ladder to reach the roof. Tragically, while nearing the damaged area, he lost his footing and fell through the ceiling, landing in the bathroom below. He was found unconscious with severe head injuries and was immediately taken to the hospital. The school community has been deeply affected by his passing. Virat Sritlalai, an elementary teacher who witnessed the event, recalled how he had warned Phutthawat not to climb the roof and expressed profound grief over the incident. Phutthawat's selfless dedication to his students and staff, even on his days off, was evident in his final moments. Phutthawat's body will be laid to rest at Wat Daeng Thammachart, where a funeral service will be hosted by the school staff and Nonthaburi PAO. Discussions are underway regarding potential support for Phutthawat's family in recognition of his contributions to the school. -- 2024-09-25 RPReplay_Final1727234498.mp4

Picture from responders. A 55-year-old man tragically lost his life while attempting to repair a water pump in a 12-metre deep groundwater well, succumbing to the effects of toxic hydrogen sulfide gas (H2S) and a lack of breathable air, on the morning of September 24, in Chai Nat Province. The victim, identified as Pichailak Khumjiamkasem, was working in a field in Don Kam Subdistrict, Sankhaburi District, when the fatal incident occurred. He was accompanied by his wife, 47-year-old Chayanphim Khumjiamkasem, who helplessly watched the situation unfold. According to local authorities, who arrived on the scene following the call, Pichailak had entered the well to fix a malfunctioning pump. As he descended, he began to struggle with breathing, trying to climb back up the ladder but was quickly overpowered by the toxic gas. His wife, seeing him in distress, rushed to find help, but it was too late by the time rescuers arrived. Rescue teams from Cha Nat’s disaster response unit, along with medical professionals, spent over an hour recovering Pichailak’s body from the narrow well. Equipped with breathing apparatus and ropes, the team faced numerous challenges due to the depth and lack of breathable air in the well. The presence of H2S was confirmed by using a gas detector. Chayanphim, visibly distraught, recounted how the tragedy unfolded. "He went down to fix the pump. At first, everything seemed fine, but suddenly, he couldn’t breathe. I saw him struggling to climb back up, but he just didn’t have the strength. By the time I could get help, it was too late." Authorities have confirmed that Pichailak died from asphyxiation caused by the lack of oxygen in the well and the inhalation of hydrogen sulfide gas. His body was later handed over to his family for religious rites. Hydrogen sulfide gas (H2S) gives off a “rotten egg” odour. This gas can occur in wells naturally as a result of decay and chemical reactions with soil and rocks or produced by certain “sulfur bacteria” in the ground water. -- 2024-09-25

Picture courtesy of Daily News. A 23-year-old Belgian man caused havoc at the Pak Kret Police Station after being detained for erratic behavior on a Bangkok expressway. The incident, which occurred on September 24, saw Mr. Van Mullem Wout, under the influence of alcohol, engage in a series of disruptive acts, including defecating on the station floor and stripping down to his underwear to mock officers. The chaotic episode began when expressway officers reported a foreign man running on the highway, and fearing for his safety, a patrol unit was dispatched to pick him up, later identifying him as the Belgian national, Mr. Wout. After arriving at the station, he initially calmed down and rested for an hour, but soon afterward, the situation escalated. Wout began to defecate in the police station, filling the area with a foul odour. Officers attempted to escort him to clean up, but instead, he snuck behind the station, stripped down to just his underwear, and began dancing and teasing the officers. Exhausted from his antics, he eventually collapsed on the steps of a nearby police flat. Authorities quickly moved to dress him and calm him down. At around 08:00, Wout crossed over to Horwang Nonthaburi School, located opposite the station, but was promptly followed and apprehended again. He was placed in a holding cell to sober up. In the wake of the bizarre disturbance, immigration authorities were contacted to take further action and handle the case according to legal procedures. -- 2024-09-24

Picture from responders. A bank employee driving an electric vehicle (EV) was tragically killed in a late-night accident after falling asleep at the wheel and crashing into the rear of an 18-wheeler truck. The accident occurred on Rama 2 Road, heading south, near an NGV gas station at kilometre marker 59+500 in Bang Kaew, Mueang district, Samut Songkhram. At approximately 23:30 on September 23, Pol. Lt. Col. Chetha Onsut, an investigator from Samut Songkhram Police Station, received a report of a fatal rear-end collision. Rescue teams from the Sawang Benjatham Foundation quickly arrived at the scene alongside the police. Upon their arrival, they discovered the body of Mr. Sarut (surname withheld), aged 40, a bank employee from Samut Sakhon. He was found dead in the driver's seat of his white BYD Dolphin EV, with severe injuries to his head, chest and legs. Rescue workers used hydraulic equipment to extricate his body from the heavily damaged vehicle. Responders reported there was no fire and had no problems with the vehicle’s batteries. Nearby, officials found the 18-wheeler involved in the collision, a white Isuzu truck registered in Ratchaburi, with its trailer also bearing Ratchaburi. The rear of the truck was damaged. The driver, Mr. Jakkrit (surname withheld), 30, from Bang Saphan district, Prachuap Khiri Khan, was present and waiting to provide a statement to the police. Mr. Jakkrit recounted that he had been transporting wood boards from Lopburi to Krabi. At the time of the accident, he had parked his truck in the left lane with hazard lights on, as he had briefly stepped out to sign paperwork at a nearby document kiosk. His girlfriend, who had exited the vehicle to use the restroom, was in the process of climbing back into the truck when the EV, traveling at high speed, collided with the rear of the trailer without any signs of braking. The impact threw his girlfriend into the truck's console, causing minor injuries, while belongings in the truck's cab were scattered by the force of the crash. Preliminary investigations suggest that the deceased, after finishing his late shift at the bank, may have been fatigued, causing him to fall asleep at the wheel. This led to his vehicle veering out of control and crashing into the 18-wheeler. Authorities have sent the body to Somdet Phra Buddhaleelat Hospital for an autopsy, with further examination to be conducted at the forensic department of Ratchaburi Hospital. Police are continuing their investigation to determine the exact cause of the accident, and legal proceedings will follow accordingly. -- 2024-09-24

Pictures from responders. Emergency services were alerted via hotline 199 on September 24, about a liquefied petroleum gas (LPG) leak in the Pruksa Village, The Seasons Romklao-Lat Krabang housing estate, located in Soi Chalong Krung 53, Chalong Krung Road, Lam Pla Thiew subdistrict, Lat Krabang district. Firefighters and rescue teams from the Lat Krabang Fire and Rescue Station were immediately dispatched to the scene. Upon arrival at approximately 10:15, the officials began inspecting the area to assess the situation. It was confirmed that a 15-kilogram LPG cylinder had leaked, leading to an explosion. The blast had ripped wall linings off, broke windows and part of the roof had been blown away., with a stand up fan found hanging from the ceiling. Fortunately the force of the blast had vented the home, so there was no fire, with no further gas build up and responders isolated the cylinder by turning off the valve. Unfortunately, the blast resulted in one person being injured, a 73-year-old woman who was in the home at the time of the incident. Paramedics from Lat Krabang Hospital promptly arrived on the scene and began administering first aid to the victim, who was found under the debris. She had suffered suspected fractures to arms and legs and was only semi conscious with a head injury. The casualty was transported to the hospital for further treatment. The cause of the leak is under investigation, but this incident underscores the importance of strict safety measures and regular checks on gas cylinders to avoid potentially catastrophic outcomes.
