Picture courtesy of Khoasod. In a dramatic incident that unfolded on September 4, chaos erupted on the streets of Bangkok when the driver of a six-wheel truck went on a rampage, colliding with multiple vehicles and leading police on a 30 kilometre chase that ended in Samut Prakan province. The suspect, after evading capture for over an hour, eventually abandoned the vehicle and leaped into a canal in a desperate attempt to escape authorities. The ordeal near the Kluai Nam Thai intersection in the Phra Rama 4 area of the capital. Eyewitnesses reported seeing the truck driver exhibiting erratic behavior as he drove the massive vehicle in circles around the Maleenont Tower on Rama 4 Road, located in the Klong Toei district. The truck, with its driver seemingly in a frenzied state, narrowly missed pedestrians and other vehicles as it sped towards Phra Khanong intersection before making a U-turn back towards Maleenont Tower. The situation intensified when the truck reached the Kluai Nam Thai intersection and was halted by a red traffic light. Taking advantage of the brief stop, four police officers on motorcycles, who had been pursuing the truck, attempted to apprehend the driver. They approached the vehicle and one officer climbed onto the truck, trying to break the window. However, the driver, armed with a knife, retaliated, forcing the officer to retreat. In a bid to stop the rampaging vehicle officers opened fire on the truck's tyres, discharging over ten rounds. Despite their efforts, the driver managed to continue maneuvering the vehicle, swerving right and left in an attempt to escape. The truck struck several cars stopped at the traffic light, causing significant damage but, fortunately, no serious injuries. With the truck still operational, the suspect sped off towards Samut Prakan province. The chase continued for 30 kilometres until the truck was finally located near a canal in the Bang Nam Chut area of Bang Phli district. Abandoning the vehicle, the driver made a desperate escape by diving into the canal, disappearing into the murky waters. Police officers have cordoned off the area and are continuing their search for the suspect. The situation has drawn significant public attention, with many expressing concern on social media, over the safety risks posed by the chase and the driver’s reckless actions. Authorities have yet to determine the motive behind the driver's behavior and are investigating whether drugs or other substances may have played a role. The incident remains under investigation, with police urging anyone with information to come forward. The search for the suspect is ongoing. -- 2024-09-04 Get the ASEAN NOW daily NEWSLETTER - Click HERE to subscribe

An update on the Cathy Pacific flight. The problem on the flight unfolded several minutes after take-off on flight CX383 from Hong Kong to Zurich on September 2, and sources familiar with the matter reported it was a leak in the fuel system that appeared to have caused a brief engine fire that was quickly extinguished by the crew of the Zurich bound jet. The leak was in a system designed to inject fuel to the XWB-97 engine, the Rolls-Royce model used on the A350-1000. That system comprises a pipe that feeds fuel from an entry point or manifold to a nozzle that sprays fuel into the combustion chamber, the hot inner core of the engine. This is a different engine to that used on the Thai Airways A350s and there are no immediate signs this incident will trigger significant regulatory action involving all A350s. Seems that most airlines, like Thai Airways have decided to take no action, unless flying the A350-1000s.

Pictures from responders. An accident involving multiple vehicles claimed the lives of three individuals and left one injured in the early hours of September 4, on the Kanchanaphisek Road (Highway 9) in Pathum Thani Province. The incident occurred around 03:10, amid rainy conditions, contributing to the tragic chain of events. The accident began when a white Hino trailer truck, carrying an empty container, collided with a 10-wheeler Isuzu truck loaded with flour. The impact caused the Isuzu truck to tip over, blocking multiple lanes of the highway near kilometre marker 7+600 in the Khlong Si area of Khlong Luang district. As vehicles struggled to avoid the overturned truck, a black Toyota Fortuner, driven by Mr. Napat Panthaweegan, 51, collided with the 10-wheeler. Although he sustained only minor injuries, Mr. Napat’s vehicle was trapped in the wreckage. Moments later, a white Toyota Revo pickup truck, carrying three refrigeration technicians, crashed into the scene with devastating force. All three occupants of the Revo were pronounced dead at the scene. Rescue teams, including volunteers from the Ruamkatanyu Foundation and motorway rescue personnel, responded promptly. They used specialised equipment to extricate the bodies from the crushed pickup truck. The deceased have been identified as Mr. Prawit Kaewphu, 29, the driver, Mr. Songkran Oonsantia, 42, who was seated beside him, and Mr. Witthawat Wongvien, 33. The men were returning to their workplace in Bangkok after a job in Khon Kaen province. According to Mr. Phasthanat Rueangrit, 52, the driver of the trailer truck, he had been driving in the left lane when he attempted to avoid a parked vehicle on the shoulder. This maneuver led to the collision with the Isuzu truck, which then lost control and overturned. The subsequent collisions involving the Fortuner and Revo trucks occurred shortly thereafter. Police investigators, led by Lt. Col. Chatchai Thawornsap, who is in charge of the investigation, have documented the scene and recorded statements from the involved parties. A crane was brought in to remove the wreckage from the road, and the deceased were transported to Thammasat University Hospital to await identification and funeral arrangements. Authorities are continuing to investigate the accident and plan to pursue legal action against any parties found responsible for the deadly incident. -- 2024-09-04 Get the ASEAN NOW daily NEWSLETTER - Click HERE to subscribe

The incident occurred near Sala 1 in Sriracha Subdistrict. The body, found approximately 10 metres from the pier, was that of an unidentified male, estimated to be between 35 and 45 years old. The man was wearing a green sports shirt and camouflage shorts. Upon examination, two gashes were found on his forehead, both about 4mm long, likely caused by impact with a hard object. The body bore additional distinctive features, including a tattoo of a Kabuki demon on the left side of the chest and the words "Born in the Reign of King Rama IX" on the right chest. Multiple stitch mark scars were also observed on the left knee, indicating a previous surgery. Blood stains were discovered on nearby rocks, but no signs of assault were evident. Authorities estimate that the man had been dead for at least five hours before his body was discovered. It is initially suspected that he may have collapsed, hitting his head on the rocks, or he could have been a fisherman whose body drifted to the shore. Further investigation revealed that the deceased who was later identified as Mr. Samat Wongdokmai, 35, a resident of Chalong Market. According to family members, Mr. Samat had gone out to collect scrap metal in a public canal in Chalong Market during the rain the previous night. The accident occurred at approximately 19:40, on September 3. Pol. Lt. Col.
