Picture courtesy of Khaosod. Thirteen primary school children were injured, three seriously, after a swarm of wasps attacked them at Wat Mukthara School in Pak Nakhon subdistrict, Nakhon Si Thammarat. The incident occurred around 16:00 on 22 May, shortly after school had finished for the day. According to initial reports, a male student threw a rock at a wasp nest lodged beneath the eaves of a classroom building. The impact shattered the nest, provoking an aggressive response from the Asian hornets (commonly known in Thai as “tor hua suea”). The children, both boys and girls, were caught near the nest and quickly overwhelmed by the swarm. Panic ensued as students ran in all directions, some colliding with one another in the confusion. Emergency responders from the Pracharuamjai Foundation rushed to the scene, where they provided first aid and transported the injured pupils to a nearby subdistrict hospital. Of the 13 children stung, three exhibited severe allergic reactions and were urgently transferred to Maharaj Nakhon Si Thammarat Hospital for further treatment. The remaining ten children continued to receive care locally but will also be moved if their conditions worsen. Teachers and parents described the situation as chaotic, with many adults frantically trying to help the children to safety. Authorities are now reviewing school safety protocols to prevent similar incidents in the future. The school has yet to confirm what actions will be taken regarding the damaged nest or the student believed to have provoked the swarm. Adapted by Asean Now from Khaosod 2025-05-24.

Picture of the aircraft HS-EAG Airbus A321 Neo at the secure parking area. An AirAsia flight was thrown into chaos on the afternoon of 23 May, after a 63 year old Thai passenger allegedly made a bomb threat shortly before takeoff, prompting the aircraft to stop its scheduled departure from Phuket International Airport. Flight FD3092, bound for Bangkok’s Don Mueang Airport, was scheduled to depart at 15:10. However, the Airbus A321 aircraft, carrying 200 passengers, was forced to move to a secure area of the airport at 15:17 after the male passenger reportedly claimed there was a bomb in an overhead luggage compartment, as he was loading his black shoulder bag onto the shelf. Witnesses reported that he told the flight attendant, "Watch out for the bomb in the bag." The captain immediately followed standard aviation security protocols and alerted air traffic control, triggering an emergency response. The aircraft was directed to Isolated Parking Bay 99, where all passengers were evacuated and subjected to security screening. Phuket Airport activated its Emergency Operations Centre (EOC) and coordinated a thorough investigation in collaboration with airport security, AirAsia staff, provincial police and the tourist police. All baggage and the aircraft were inspected meticulously. Authorities later confirmed that no suspicious or dangerous items were found. Passengers were offered refreshments during the delay and the airline provided regular updates. The individual responsible for the false alarm was detained and denied further travel. AirAsia confirmed that it intends to pursue legal action in accordance with aviation laws due to the passenger’s “inappropriate behaviour”. A spokesperson for Phuket Airport reiterated that the emergency bomb threat protocol, based on strict ICAO ( International Civil Aviation Organisation) standards, was followed without compromise to ensure the safety of all on board. After receiving the all-clear, flight FD3092 was rescheduled to depart at approximately 19:00, but finally departed ar 19:35, arriving in Bangkok at around 20:52. In a statement issued later, AirAsia apologised for the disruption, adding: “The safety of our passengers and crew is our utmost priority. We appreciate the patience and understanding of our guests during this time.” The incident has once again highlighted the serious legal consequences of making false threats aboard commercial flights. Picture courtesy of Khaosod. The body of a 47-year-old man was discovered in an irrigation pond in Kong Ra district, Pattalung province, two days after he was last seen leaving a local karaoke bar. On 22 May, at approximately 14:00, police were alerted to a body found in a pond measuring 6 metres wide, 30 metres long, and 6 metres deep, located in the Samwang subdistrict. The deceased, identified as Mr. Supit, a local resident, was found with injuries to his head and mouth, with the condition of the body suggesting he had been dead for two days. According to family members, Mr. Supit had gone out to a nearby karaoke bar on 19 May and did not return home. Concerned relatives began searching for him but were unable to locate him until the discovery of his body. Authorities questioned a 61-year-old man who had reportedly been with Mr. Supit that evening. The man stated that he had encountered Mr. Supit walking along the road and invited him to the karaoke bar. He claimed to have dropped Mr. Supit off at the entrance of his road before returning home alone. However, CCTV footage obtained by the police showed the man riding his motorcycle alone, prompting further investigation into the circumstances surrounding Mr. Supit’s death. The body has been sent for a detailed autopsy to determine the exact cause of death. Police have not ruled out foul play, as family members remain suspicious due to the nature of the injuries sustained. The investigation is ongoing. Adapted by Asean Now from Khaosod 2025-05-24.

Picture courtesy of Amarin. Residents of Nong Prue subdistrict in Bang Lamung, Chonburi, are living in fear after two pit bulls belonging to a British expatriate fatally attacked a local resident’s dog. The incident has sparked widespread concern, as the dogs remain at the owner’s home nearly a week after the attack, with no resolution in sight. The ongoing issue has been the subject of tense negotiations. Police at Nong Prue Police Station invited both parties for mediation, the British dog owner, who has not been named and Ms. Alisha, 20, whose pet was killed in the attack. The discussion, also attended by representatives from the provincial justice department and the Nong Prue Municipality, lasted several hours but ended without an agreement. Ms. Alisha has insisted on pressing criminal charges against the dog owner under relevant Thai animal control laws and is preparing to file a civil lawsuit at the Pattaya Provincial Court to seek compensation for her loss. Meanwhile, the British national has requested a postponement of any immediate action regarding the removal of his dogs, asking to keep the animals at his residence until the end of the month while he arranges for a friend to adopt them. Local residents remain deeply concerned for their safety. With the dogs still housed in the community, many fear a repeat of the fatal incident. Calls are growing louder for local authorities to expedite the relocation of the animals to prevent further harm. Driverless “Ghost” Lorry Spins Around Central Island for 10 Minutes After Crash Picture courtesy of Daily News. Picture courtesy of Daily News. A six-wheeled lorry inexplicably began reversing and spinning in circles around a central traffic island for over ten minutes, without a driver, on the Kalasin–Kamalasai Road. The incident occurred near Ban Tao Hai, in Lub Subdistrict of Mueang Kalasin District, roughly 50 metres from the Tao Hai traffic lights. The lorry had reportedly been parked with its hazard lights flashing, in a coned off area facing oncoming traffic, while road workers marked lines on a freshly paved stretch of tarmac. However, witnesses were stunned when the stationary lorry suddenly began reversing on its own, after being struck by a car, climbing onto and circling the central island of the road, moving erratically for more than ten minutes. Bystanders and motorists capturing video footage and nearby CCTV cameras also recorded the bizarre scene. With no one behind the wheel, some locals even dubbed it a “ghost lorry”. According to eyewitnesses, the lorry had been safely parked while work crews marked the road surface. The situation changed when a black saloon car came speeding through the well lit section and slammed into the parked lorry. The collision caused significant damage to the car’s front end. The male driver of the vehicle was slightly injured and transported to hospital by rescue services. Authorities stated the driver believes that the darkness of the evening may have contributed to him failing to notice the parked lorry in time. Crucially, it is suspected that the lorry had been left in reverse gear. Upon being struck from behind, the force of the collision may have jolted the truck’s ignition systems, somehow causing the engine to start and engage in the reverse movement, leading to the lorry’s eerie, driverless motion around the traffic island. Fortunately no one else was seriously injured. Nevertheless, the incident has caused widespread curiosity, with some residents continuing to joke about supernatural causes. Local police from Mueang Kalasin Police Station are conducting a full investigation into the incident, including interviews with all involved parties, and will determine whether any legal action is to follow. Cybercrime police have launched a sweeping operation targeting a major online gambling network, with the home of a high-profile local councillor, known as “Sor Golf,” among four key locations raided. Pictures courtesy of Khaosod. Cybercrime police have launched a sweeping operation targeting a major online gambling network, with the home of a high-profile local councillor, known as “Sor Golf,” among four key locations raided. Authorities uncovered a vast web of financial transactions linked to illegal online betting, with total funds exceeding 200 million baht annually. At 15:00 on 22 May, senior officers from the Cyber Crime Investigation Bureau (CCIB) held a press conference in Hat Yai, Songkhla province, detailing the outcome of “Operation Wingame98.” The online gambling website in question offered games such as slots, baccarat, dragon tiger, blackjack, roulette, lottery, and sports betting, all hosted and transacted via Thai bank accounts using automated systems and so-called “mule” accounts to conceal financial flows. The investigation culminated in the issuance of arrest and search warrants, leading to raids at four separate sites. The most high-profile of these was the luxury home of Mr. Siradanai Plaiduang, also known locally as Sor Golf, a 28-year-old councillor in Songkhla province. Police seized a large cache of luxury goods including 21 branded handbags, designer watches and belts, as well as ammunition and documents deemed critical to the investigation. Additional searches were carried out at: • A fighting bull training camp believed to be owned by the councillor. • Two private residences in the Hat Yai area used by suspected accomplices. Four suspects operating mule accounts for the network were arrested during the raids. They were identified as: 1. Pichaya, 27 2. Satayu, 52 3. Kitipong, 20 4. Kawin, 32 According to Police Lieutenant General Trirong Piupan, Commissioner of the CCIB, the operation was initiated under national directives to eliminate online gambling operations exploiting citizens and youth. He confirmed there is solid evidence linking Sor Golf to the gambling ring. “We are confident we have enough material to pursue serious charges against the councillor,” he said, adding that further investigation has revealed attempts to transfer illicit assets to individuals close to the suspect. Financial analysis showed that multiple bank accounts used for laundering the proceeds of online gambling were directly connected to Mr. Siradanai. Police also noted that he had previously faced charges for assaulting border patrol officers, underscoring his history of legal entanglements. The four suspects now face charges of: • Organising and promoting gambling through electronic media without permission. • Conspiring to commit money laundering offences. • Engaging in acts of money laundering as a result of the conspiracy. Authorities vowed to pursue every individual involved in the network, seize all illicit assets, and investigate possible links to further criminal enterprises. “We will not stop until the entire network is dismantled and their wealth confiscated,” said Lt. Gen. Trirong. Investigations are ongoing, and more arrests are expected in the coming days. Cambodian Man Electrocuted While Fishing, Relatives Attempt Sand Burial in Bid to Revive Him Picture courtesy of Khaosod. A 32-year-old Cambodian migrant worker died after being electrocuted while using a makeshift fish-stunning device near an irrigation canal in Chonburi province. Despite 30 minutes of resuscitation attempts by emergency services, the man could not be saved. In a display of misplaced faith in folklore, his grieving friends and wife attempted to bury his body in sand, believing it would draw out the remaining electricity and revive him. Picture courtesy of Khaosod. The incident occurred in Sra Si Liam subdistrict, Phanat Nikhom district, close to Wat Laem Pradu. The victim, dressed in a long-sleeved T-shirt and trousers, was found unconscious and soaking wet beside the canal. According to rescue workers, he had been using an improvised electrofishing device, and created from a car battery connected via wires to a bamboo pole, when he suffered a fatal electric shock and collapsed into the water. Emergency responders arrived quickly and began CPR, administering chest compressions and using a defibrillator (AED) for half an hour. Despite their efforts, paramedics from Panat Nikhom Hospital were forced to pronounce the man dead at the scene. However, the man’s Cambodian wife and colleagues refused to believe he had died. Drawing on a long-standing belief common in parts of Cambodia, they laid his body flat on a pile of sand and covered it completely, convinced the sand would extract residual electricity and restore life. Though emergency personnel explained there was no scientific basis for such actions, the bereaved family insisted on carrying out the ritual. Only after further confirmation by police that the man was truly deceased did they consent to have the body transported for autopsy. The belief in using sand to “absorb electricity” from a person who has been electrocuted first gained widespread attention on social media back in 2015 and is rooted in traditional Cambodian practices. Associate Professor Dr Jessada Denduangboripant, a lecturer in biology at Chulalongkorn University, publicly addressed the issue, warning that such beliefs were dangerous and could lead to preventable deaths. “By the time a person has collapsed from an electric shock, the current has already passed through the body,” Dr Jessada explained. “There is no remaining electricity to be ‘drawn out’ by sand or any other material. CPR must be administered immediately to have any chance of saving a life.” Dr Jessada also highlighted similar misconceptions in Thailand, such as placing electrocuted victims on zinc sheets to draw out electricity, another ineffective and potentially harmful practice. Police from Phanat Nikhom Station collected the homemade fishing device as evidence. Preliminary findings suggest the man was electrocuted due to leakage from the improvised electrical setup while fishing alone by the canal. Friends nearby found him unconscious and called for help, but it was too late. Adapted by Asean Now from Khaosod 2025-05-23.

Heir Demands 1.5 Million per Rai for Road Access to Health Centre Picture courtesy of Khaosod. A long-running community access road to a rural health centre in Nakhon Sawan province has been suddenly barricaded, causing severe disruption to local residents and patients, after a landowner claimed inheritance rights and demanded the hospital pay 1.5 million baht per rai, to continue using the route. Picture courtesy of Khaosod. A long-running community access road to a rural health centre in Nakhon Sawan province has been suddenly barricaded, causing severe disruption to local residents and patients, after a landowner claimed inheritance rights and demanded the hospital pay 1.5 million baht per rai, to continue using the route. The dispute centres around the entrance road to the Ban Makluea Subdistrict Health Promotion Hospital, located in Mueang district. Local villagers contacted the press after barbed wire and warning signs were erected to block the concrete road that has been in use since 1997. The landowner, a woman who runs a nearby petrol station, claimed the road lies on private property she inherited from her father and has since restricted access. She has told hospital authorities that the only way to restore access is to purchase the land at her proposed price. In the meantime, residents and patients, many of whom are elderly or disabled, are forced to use an alternative route through a rough, muddy dirt path behind Wat Tha Charoen Phatthana School, some 500 metres away. The track is impassable by car and only accessible by motorcycle, posing serious safety and accessibility issues. “This road has been the lifeline for villagers and patients for nearly 30 years,” said Mrs. Wasinan Homchan, director of the health centre. “Dozens to hundreds of people come for treatment daily, many using walking aids or wheelchairs. The detour is simply not suitable.” In response, local authorities have tried to mitigate the impact. The Ban Makluea Subdistrict Administrative Organisation has deployed golf carts to ferry patients as close to the health centre as possible. Village health volunteers (Aor Sor Mor) are also stationed along the route to assist those needing help navigating the difficult terrain. District Chief Mr. Ronakorn Phaowicharn has now intervened, confirming that earlier negotiations with the landowner failed. He has instructed officials to compile all relevant documents and submit them to the provincial office. Legal proceedings will follow, starting with a request for a temporary court injunction and eventually a formal claim under “servitude law”, which, if successful, would declare the route a public thoroughfare. If that legal route proves unsuccessful, authorities say they may be forced to pursue further court action in the public interest. Local residents have pleaded with the landowner to reconsider, citing the hardship faced by the elderly and sick. “We’re just asking for compassion,” said one elderly patient. “This road has helped save lives for decades. Blocking it now hurts the whole community.” The case has sparked debate nationwide about land rights versus public good, especially in rural areas where communities often rely on informal arrangements that date back generations. Picture courtesy of Khaosod. A 35-year-old man has been arrested by highway police after hijacking a taxi at knifepoint in Ayutthaya and fleeing to a hotel in Nonthaburi. The suspect, who was under the influence of methamphetamine, now faces multiple charges. The arrest was carried out following an order from Police Major General Kongkrit Lertsitthikul, commander of the Highway Police Division, instructing Police Colonel Kuekkong Disawat and other officers to coordinate with Bang Ban Police Station in Phra Nakhon Si Ayutthaya. The suspect, identified as Mr. Akkharasin or “Beam”, was taken into custody at a hotel in Bang Rak Phatthana, Bang Bua Thong District, Nonthaburi. He was charged with robbery causing physical or mental harm, possession and use of a Category 1 narcotic (methamphetamine), and illegal drug possession. Items seized included a brown shoulder bag, two mobile phones, six methamphetamine pills and a green-yellow Toyota Altis taxi. The incident began when a 71-year-old taxi driver reported being hired by the suspect for a 700-baht fare from Bang Duea Subdistrict in Pathum Thani to Bang Chani Subdistrict in Ayutthaya. Upon reaching a secluded area, the suspect used a nail clipper as a weapon and attempted to strangle the driver while demanding 1,000 baht. A struggle ensued, during which the victim was thrown out of the vehicle. The suspect then drove off in the stolen taxi, heading toward Nonthaburi. Local police forces were alerted and an extensive manhunt led to his location at the hotel. Upon questioning, the suspect confessed to the crime. He admitted abandoning the stolen taxi at a shopping mall car park in Nonthaburi, which was subsequently recovered by police. He also revealed he had purchased seven meth pills for 300 baht from a dealer known as “Nang Fon” in Bang Rak Phatthana, and had consumed one pill prior to the robbery. Mr. Akkharasin was handed over to Bang Ban Police Station to face legal proceedings. Adapted by Asean Now from Khaosod 2025-05-23.

Picture courtesy of CH7 A 33-year-old man with a history of mental illness drowned after suffering a suspected cramp while swimming in a pond located in a rubber plantation in Sichon district. Police Lieutenant Tosaporn Thongkaew, deputy investigator at Chawang Police Station, received the distress call and rushed to the scene in Sai Ra Subdistrict alongside forensic officers, a doctor from Chawang Crown Prince Hospital and rescue workers from the Siam Ruamjai Pu-In Foundation. At the scene, officials discovered the lifeless body of a man floating face-down in the pond. He was later identified as Mr Kirati, aged 33. A preliminary examination revealed no visible wounds or signs of physical assault. The body was recovered and transported for further examination. According to Ms Phimsucha, 67, a relative of the deceased, Mr Kirati had long suffered from a psychiatric condition. However, he had never shown violent or aggressive tendencies, only displaying erratic behaviour such as talking to himself while wandering the village, often at night. He was also known to frequently sneak out of the house and had a habit of swimming in local canals and ponds. On the day of the incident, local rubber tappers spotted Mr Kirati entering the pond. Despite efforts to persuade him to come out, he refused and even asked for kratom tea, which the villagers did not have. Sometime later, he was found drowned in the same pond. Authorities believe Mr Kirati may have stayed in the water too long, suffered a muscle cramp and drowned without anyone noticing. His family did not suspect foul play and have accepted the death as accidental. After the post-mortem examination, the body was released to the family for religious funeral rites.
