Picture courtesy of Kaoded. A rescue operation unfolded in central Pattaya on the afternoon of 23 May, when an air-conditioning technician fell from the fifth floor of a commercial building and became trapped on a balcony one floor below. The incident occurred at around 13:00 on Soi Buakhao. Emergency services from the Sawang Boriboon Thammasathan Rescue Foundation rushed to the scene after receiving reports of a man who had fallen from a building under renovation. The victim, identified as Mr Thepphitak Waimat 41, was conducting maintenance work on an air-conditioning unit on the fifth-floor balcony when he is believed to have lost consciousness and fallen. In a stroke of luck, his fall was broken by the fourth-floor balcony, preventing him from plummeting to the ground. Due to the ongoing work, there was no internal access to the casualty. Rescue workers assessed the situation and quickly deployed a rope-rescue team and rappelled from the fifth floor to reach the injured man, who was precariously stuck on the narrow ledge. The complex operation took over an hour, with rescuers finally securing him in a rescue stretcher and lowering him to the third-floor balcony, from where he was safely evacuated. Mr Thepphitak sustained a serious head injury and was reported to be in critical condition due to significant blood loss. He was immediately transported to Pattaya Pathomkhun Hospital, where medical teams are closely monitoring his condition. Further investigations are underway. Picture courtesy of Matichon. Cybercrime authorities have successfully dismantled a significant online gambling operation known as 3AVIPBET, which was generating over 120 million baht annually. The operation involved a network of individuals across Thailand, including a key suspect apprehended at Suvarnabhumi Airport while attempting to flee to Hong Kong. The Cyber Crime Investigation Bureau (CCIB) conducted a series of raids on 23 May, targeting properties in Chiang Mai, Chiang Rai, and Bangkok. The operation led to the arrest of five individuals, including a 27-year-old woman from Ang Thong who managed the website’s financial accounts. Authorities seized assets valued at over 7 million baht, including cash, Chinese currency, property titles, and electronic devices. The gambling website had been operational since 2020, with monthly transactions exceeding 10 million baht. The syndicate employed various tactics to evade law enforcement, such as using satellite internet connections and relocating operations to neighbouring countries. Despite these efforts, the government has intensified its crackdown on illegal online activities, leading to a significant decrease in reported cybercrimes. Authorities are continuing their investigation to identify and apprehend remaining members of the syndicate, both domestically and internationally. Citizens are encouraged to report any information related to online gambling activities via the 1441 Cyber Crime Hotline. This operation underscores Thailand’s commitment to combating cybercrime and illegal online gambling, aiming to protect the public from associated risks and ensure a safer digital environment. Picture courtesy of Amarin In the early hours of May 23, a 17-year-old male was found dead after falling from the fifth floor of a dormitory building in Rangsit-Nakhon Nayok 20 Alley, Prathum Thani Province. The incident occurred around 00:30, prompting an immediate response from local police, emergency medical servicesand rescue volunteers. The deceased, identified only as “Mr. A”, was discovered lying on his side in a pool of blood near the motorcycle parking area adjacent to the building. He was wearing a yellow T-shirt and white shorts, with visible head injuries and broken limbs. Preliminary investigations indicated that he had fallen from Room 501 on the fifth floor. Additionally, an air conditioning unit on the first floor was damaged from impact, as he fell. According to Mr. Surachai, the 29-year-old owner of the room and a friend of the deceased, Mr. A had returned to the dormitory around 23:00 after handling some academic matters in Bangkok. They had a brief conversation about Mr. A’s desire to return to work, to which Mr. Surachai responded by suggesting he had recently dealt with academic issues. Mr. A then went downstairs but returned shortly after, expressing that he had nowhere else to go. Mr. Surachai heard a noise from the back door and upon checking, found Mr. A had fallen or jumped. The victim’s mother, Mrs. Chanthara, arrived at the scene visibly distraught. She explained that she had been unable to reach her son by phone and was unaware of his whereabouts. She mentioned that they had not argued recently and had communicated via chat earlier that day. She confirmed that her son was not suffering from depression and left home around 22:00. Police Lieutenant Colonel Sawat Khongkaew, the investigating officer, documented the scene and conducted an inspection of the room, finding only a bag of clothing. The authorities have taken Mr. Surachai and the mother for further questioning and have sent the body to Thammasat University Hospital for a post-mortem examination. The investigation is ongoing, with authorities not ruling out any possibility of either foul play, suicide or accidental. Adapted by Asean Now from Amarin 2025-05-24.

A Myanmar crewman narrowly escaped death after falling overboard in the early hours of the morning and drifting for nearly six hours in rough seas off the coast of Satun province. At approximately 06:00 on 23 May, the Satun Port Control Centre received an emergency report of a missing crew member from the fishing vessel Singh Decho 5, a pair trawler operating in Satun waters. The crewman, later identified as Mr. Mauso Tonoo, a Myanmar national, was believed to have gone overboard between 03:00 and 05:00 during a night of turbulent seas. Vice Admiral Suwat Donsakul, Director of the Naval Operations Command for Maritime Security in Region 3 (NRSA Region 3), issued an immediate search order. Captain Ratphon Kaewkrajai, head of Satun’s Coastal Security Control Centre (CSCC), led the rescue operation, deploying the high-speed patrol vessel NRSA 4006. A breakthrough came at 08:45 when Singh Decho 5 reported spotting Mr. Tonoo floating near the fishing zone. The crew successfully pulled him aboard, triggering cheers of relief and joy from those on board. Video footage of the dramatic rescue, bringing Mr. Tonoo to safety, quickly went viral on social media. The incident has been widely praised as a testament to the readiness and coordination of Thailand’s maritime emergency services, in coordinating the successful rescue. Pongsayam Meekanthong, Pol. Maj. Gen. Krit Warit, and Pol. Maj. Gen. Monsanthikorn Worawan, along with Pol. Col. Man Rotthong, head of the Tourist Police Bureau’s investigation unit, targeted illegal foreign labour in Pattaya. Police officers, led by Pol. Lt. Col. Kritporn Saengsurah from the Tourist Police Bureau’s Investigation Division, conducted surveillance on a hair salon located in Pattaya city. The team observed a significant number of foreign customers, primarily Chinese nationals, visiting the salon for haircuts and grooming services. Upon inspection, police found the salon staffed entirely by foreign workers with no Thai employees present. Further investigation revealed seven Chinese nationals working illegally under tourist visas. The individuals identified were: Mr. Xu (33), Mr. He (39), Mr. Cao (35), Miss Zhang (27), Mr. Yan (39), all employed as hairdressers and Miss Yuan (28) and Miss Gong (33), working as nail technicians. All were found to be working without proper permits. The salon reportedly serves only foreign clients and refuses service to Thai customers. Police also discovered cosmetic and hair care products used in the salon were imported from China without Thai language labels or certification from the Thai Food and Drug Administration (FDA), raising concerns over hygiene and potential health risks to customers. The seven individuals were arrested and handed over to Pattaya Police Station for legal proceedings. In a related case, authorities sent undercover officers into a beauty and hair salon under the jurisdiction of Nong Prue Police Station. There, they found two Vietnamese men, one Vietnamese woman, one Laotian woman, and one Thai woman working. Upon police intervention, it was confirmed that the foreign workers lacked proper work permits or were working in violation of their visa conditions. Moreover, their work fell under prohibited occupations according to the Ministry of Labour’s regulations. The Tourist Police Bureau continues to monitor and crackdown on illegal foreign employment in Pattaya, aiming to uphold labour laws and protect public health and safety. Call Centre Scam Suspect Arrested After Defrauding Army General of 3.6 Million Baht Picture courtesy of Khaosod. Police have arrested a 26-year-old man suspected of being part of a call centre scam syndicate that tricked a high-ranking army officer into transferring his entire bank balance of 3.6 million baht under the false pretence of a drug trafficking investigation. Picture courtesy of Khaosod. Police have arrested a 26-year-old man suspected of being part of a call centre scam syndicate that tricked a high-ranking army officer into transferring his entire bank balance of 3.6 million baht under the false pretence of a drug trafficking investigation. On 23 May, Police Major General Wittaya Sriprasertphap, commander of the Crime Suppression Division (CSD), ordered the arrest of Mr. Arthit, pursuant to an arrest warrant issued by the Criminal Court on 30 March 2024. He faces multiple charges, including public fraud, impersonation, computer crime involving false information and permitting others to use his bank account for cybercrime purposes. The suspect was apprehended in front of a residence in Moo 5, Bang Nam Chuet subdistrict, Mueang district, Samut Sakhon province. According to police, the scam took place in 2023, when a retired army major general received a phone call from individuals posing as police officers and bank officials. The callers falsely claimed that the officer’s personal information had been used to open credit cards linked to money laundering and narcotics trafficking cases. To “verify” his financial status, the scammers instructed the victim to install a mobile banking application for a commercial bank branch in the Chokchai 4 area of Bangkok. Over time, they persuaded him to transfer his funds into what he believed was a government-secured account, in reality, it was an account controlled by the scammer network. The total amount lost was more than 3.6 million baht. Investigations led authorities to Mr. Arthit, whose name was linked to the bank account that received the stolen funds. Police tracked him down to Samut Sakhon and made the arrest. During interrogation, the suspect claimed he had handed over his bank account to a former girlfriend and denied receiving any of the defrauded money himself. Nonetheless, police have transferred him to Phahonyothin Police Station in Bangkok for prosecution in accordance with the law. Authorities continue to investigate the wider scam network, warning the public to remain vigilant against increasingly sophisticated forms of cyber fraud. Man Arrested for Brutal Knife Attack on Nephew After Fabricated Story Unravels Picture courtesy of Khaosod. Picture courtesy of Khaosod. A 40-year-old man has confessed to viciously attacking his nephew with a knife, leaving him severely injured, after initially claiming the victim had accidentally fallen onto the weapon during a scuffle. The incident occurred on 22 May, in the village of Nong Bua Khok, Lam Plai Mat district, Buriram province. Police and emergency responders were called to the scene, where they discovered 20-year-old Mr. Satang lying in a pool of blood in front of a house. He had sustained a deep, gaping abdominal wound approximately 30 centimetres long and 8 centimetres wide, exposing parts of his intestines and lungs. He was rushed to hospital in critical condition. The suspect, Mr. Mongkol, the victim’s uncle, was not initially present at the scene. His 58-year-old mother, Mrs. Saiyon, initially claimed that Mr. Satang had attacked Mongkol with a sword but had accidentally fallen onto it during the altercation, causing his own injuries. Later, Mr. Mongkol returned to the scene on a motorbike, telling police a similar story: that Mr. Satang had requested to borrow his motorcycle and when refused, returned with a knife to attack him. Mongkol claimed he defended himself and that the victim had again fallen and accidentally injured himself. However, police were unconvinced by the inconsistent and implausible accounts. A search of the house uncovered a large kitchen knife, allegedly used in the attack. Investigators also found a fertiliser sack buried behind the house containing bloodstained clothing. Mrs. Saiyon admitted to burying the clothes but claimed she did not know their significance. Following further interrogation, Mr. Mongkol eventually confessed to deliberately attacking his nephew with the knife. He has been taken into custody and is being held at Thamenchai Police Station while formal charges are prepared. Police are continuing the investigation and have vowed to pursue justice to the full extent of the law. Adapted by Asean Now from Khaosod 2025-05-24.

Neglected Waterfall in Uttaradit Shocks Visitors with Derelict State Picture courtesy of Khaosod. A once-celebrated tourist attraction in the heart of Lap Lae district has left visitors dismayed after discovering its current state of disrepair and abandonment. Mae Phlu Waterfall, previously promoted as a must-see destination in Uttaradit province, now lies in a ghostly, derelict condition, with decaying facilities and overgrown paths rendering it unfit for public use. Picture courtesy of Khaosod. On 23 May, a group of domestic tourists who travelled to Mae Phlu Waterfall to admire its famed rainy season beauty were shocked to find the site completely neglected. Reporters who followed up on the complaint confirmed the dismal state of the area. Located in Moo 4, Mae Phlu subdistrict, the site requires visitors to walk 500 metres from the main car park to reach the waterfall. Along this path, overgrown weeds and dilapidated infrastructure paint a stark contrast to the idyllic images seen in promotional materials. Visitor benches lie broken, shops and rest areas are unsafe due to collapsing roofs and ceilings and the public toilets emit a foul odour, suggesting a prolonged lack of maintenance. Once a vibrant location, the waterfall area featured tiered concrete formations designed to mimic a natural cascade, blending harmoniously with the surrounding environment. It attracted both locals and tourists, who came to relax, swim and support small businesses offering food, drinks and souvenirs. Mae Phlu was also a source of community income and served as a valuable water resource during both the dry and rainy seasons. Despite this, the site has evidently suffered from long-term neglect by the authorities. Lap Lae district chief Mr Surawut Janngam, who recently assumed his position two months ago, admitted he had visited the site and found the conditions consistent with tourist complaints. He acknowledged the lack of public access and said the province’s governor has issued a directive to rehabilitate the area. Mr Surawut explained that while many of the structures were built over a decade ago using provincial development funds, the waterfall itself lies within the jurisdiction of the Royal Forest Department. This has created administrative hurdles in implementing repairs. However, plans are now being discussed to officially designate the area as forest land for educational and recreational use, which would allow Mae Phlu Subdistrict Administrative Organisation to allocate a dedicated budget for its restoration. Local officials and community leaders hope to revitalise the site, turning it once more into a scenic, safe and economically valuable destination for both visitors and residents. Picture courtesy of Khaosod. Thirteen primary school children were injured, three seriously, after a swarm of wasps attacked them at Wat Mukthara School in Pak Nakhon subdistrict, Nakhon Si Thammarat. The incident occurred around 16:00 on 22 May, shortly after school had finished for the day. According to initial reports, a male student threw a rock at a wasp nest lodged beneath the eaves of a classroom building. The impact shattered the nest, provoking an aggressive response from the Asian hornets (commonly known in Thai as “tor hua suea”). The children, both boys and girls, were caught near the nest and quickly overwhelmed by the swarm. Panic ensued as students ran in all directions, some colliding with one another in the confusion. Emergency responders from the Pracharuamjai Foundation rushed to the scene, where they provided first aid and transported the injured pupils to a nearby subdistrict hospital. Of the 13 children stung, three exhibited severe allergic reactions and were urgently transferred to Maharaj Nakhon Si Thammarat Hospital for further treatment. The remaining ten children continued to receive care locally but will also be moved if their conditions worsen. Teachers and parents described the situation as chaotic, with many adults frantically trying to help the children to safety. Authorities are now reviewing school safety protocols to prevent similar incidents in the future. The school has yet to confirm what actions will be taken regarding the damaged nest or the student believed to have provoked the swarm. Adapted by Asean Now from Khaosod 2025-05-24.
