  1. Hi, im currently seperated from my thai wife but still living in Thailand. What are the pro's and con's of just staying seperated and not actually divorcing........

The fact your asking means its was probably a friendly separation otherwise you would divorce.

I currently live with this very situation and not divorcing at time of separation is my biggest regret.

  2. An alternative to the above is to place a low voltage black light in the bottom of the closet since this will kill the bacteria and mold - thus far have been unable to find black lights in Thailand!

I've seen in Home Pro at the Mall in Korat so check HP in your area if you have one. Located in electrical area with all the other bulbs.

  3. philo: You have raised so many questions you should consult a lawyer for the correct answers.

Typically when you die your assets are frozen and these items make up your estate which is the only source of payment to crditors. Will or not your estate gets processed by the courts allowing creditors time to file claims. After the creditors are paid the remainder is paid out per the will, if one exists, or by the court based on Thai law.

Always have a will draw up to cover distribution of your assets if you don't want the court to decide based on Thai law. I also thinks its best to have will drawn up in every country you have assets but best talk lawyer first about that one.

If your concerned about hospital cost run up while your incapacitated you should consider a living will which spells out your wishes if unable to speak for self. Only a lawyer knows if these are accepted in Thailand.

Draw up a list of questions and go consult a lawyer rather than rely on answers from people like me. Consultation fees are usually small if any at all.

  4. If I might, I have a couple of questions about village life.

As I'm a very private person, I'm not intending to become "involved" in village life, and I certainly can't afford to provide anything for anyone other than my GF and myself. Is this a recipie for disaster?

It will only be a disaster if your GF does not understand your wants and desires so make sure you are both in agreement.

  5. So paying the insurance a week before shouldn't be a problem??

I think we're just get a new quote from October.

    Thanks for all the help.

    sparks

You can pay early no problem.

If you stay with same company and no claims the previous year you can usually get 10 percent discount on quoted premium.

Another way you can reduce insurance cost is limit the number of drivers who can drive vehicle. Normally anyone with a license is covered while driving car but we asked for insurance with wife and I as only drivers saving us 3000 baht a year for insurance. It also provides reason to refuse relatives and friends from wanting to borrow car since insurance would not cover car if they were driving.

  6. You don't state where you are located, but if you are in one of the Provences and can get a signal from the CAT CDMA system then this is both the fastest and cheapest option.

My CAT internet is 6* faster and only half the price of the IPstar system I had for several years.

My house is about 20km outside Prachinburi at Non Hom Is the what type of service is CAT CDMA

Its a phone service much like DTAC or AIS provide using GSM but it uses a different modulation scheme and is much faster for data if implemented properly. Your other option is to make do with EDGE using your current mobile phone service.

  7. sounds like your girlfriend & her son do not have any respect for you. get rid of the pair of them and call your insurance to get your wheels fixed. dont worry about paying for the buffalo that is the kids job, he took your car without permission and then you hae to pay because he said sorry. your bird is taking you for a ride... dump her right now!

Hate to be harsh but couldn't agree more.

  8. Will be up in Ubon for the next week or two now, really like it there but it is a little remote and she really wants to be nearer to her mum. Roi-et seems like a great little city but as a golfer I would like to be closer to KK where there are a few courses and the new Singha course opening soon.

Don't sacrifice your wants and desires to keep her happy because in the end you will regret it.

  9. I have a bluetooth enabled laptop. i bought 20 hours GPRS credit from One 2 Call(100baht) yesterday. How do I actually connect to the internet. Nobody in the shop could tell me, they did not understand me. My lack of Thai.

I guess I have to call a number to get my phone talking to the internet and then get my laptop talking to my phone. Any ideas.

You have two options for getting your connection working.

Option 1. If your lucky you can install the software that came with your phone on laptop. Most phones come with software disc but not all. If you do not have disc then download appropriate software for your phone (Nokia Suites, Samsung PC Studio, Motorola Tools, etc). With the software its usually very simple walk through setup procedure.

Option 2. This does not require any phone maker software installed on laptop. If you haven't already you will also need to run discover devices on laptop bluetooth software(make sure bluetooth on phone is turned on). Using the bluetooth software on laptop you need to create a bluetooth dialup network connection. Leave the username and password blank and use the following phone number: *99***1#

    Best of luck.

  10. OP I live north of Korat and use EDGE via my mobile phone connected by bluetooth or wire to USB port on PC. I like the wired method best because my phone gets charged at the same time. Service has been okay but download speeds do vary throughout the day depending on network capacity. My normal download speeds run in the 10 to 24 KB range with the faster speeds being in the morning.

I currently use AIS prepaid plan that cost 350 baht plus tax for 100 hours in 30 days. AIS has many different options.

  11. Has he got a job, can he not buy one himself?

No he hasn't, and no he can't...did you buy your own motorbike or even present when it was your 17th birthday..probably not. Your parents did.

    Guemlum

My parents didn't buy my first car. They did give me money for down payment and co-signed the bank loan with the understanding if they had to make a single payment because I missed one then the car belonged to them. Guess they were trying to teach me something and help me build credit history.

  12. but i would need a good store for that because i only know pantip and im at 3 bad experiences there as of now

    thnx

Give Pantip another try because I've never had problem one with any shops. Another option is IT mall in Fortune Town or Seacon Square.

When you buy don't go cheap buy a good unit made by APC or Leonics and don't be talked into something else by a slick saleman.

My Leonics has been running for 6 years and only needed a battery replacement during that time. I went the cheap route on the first UPS and it didn't last a year.
