  1. I doubt very much that the salary of a Hooters waitress would be 50k. That's Air Hostess territory. Perhaps in a good month, she might be able to make that with tips and salary.

It's way over the market, but it doesn't sound that unlikely to me. Look at it from the perspective of the American HQ planning the launch in Thailand. Paying the waitresses 1000 bucks a month over the market rate means you can hire and retain very attractive women, and avoid sliding into a scenario where the restaurant becomes a platform for after-hours prostitution. They want to titillate, but I don't think they want their global brand to be tarnished by prostitution. The cost-revenue picture would still easily be as good as in many other countries.

It's pure speculation, but it makes sense that they would pay well over the market.

The restaurant only pays the girls a normal salary. The workers receive the service fee plus tips. Most decent hotels and restaurants charge a 10% service fee which goes 100% the employees. Most of these employees make as much from service fees as they do from their normal pay, sometimes twice as much or more.
  2. I don't really know what they make but I think they do very well. First off it is an American restaurant and many Americans go there. The normal tip in America is about 15%. The normal bill, mine anyways, is about 800 baht for some wings, fries and beer. 15% tip for 800 baht is 120 baht. I can't remember if they deduct an automatic 10% service but in any rate they would receive 10% to 15% of all bills. I have seen Hooters on Soi 4 packed more than once and it always has a dozen or more guys just sitting along the sidewalk bar. 50k I think is possible but not every month.

  3. This is another nail in the coffin of the Thai property market. Most people who buy condos in Phuket buy for investment purposes if you are not allowed to rent them out why would you buy. Lets face it 90 percent of condo owners are farang so its just another slap on the face for farangs.

You can still rent out a condo monthly, just not daily.

Given that farang cannot own more than 49% of any condo block, Not sure were the 90% comes from.

you are correct about the 49 51% rule however in Phuket they have circumvented this by the 51 % being bought in a thai company name or leased instead of freehold when I say 90% farang owned I am refering to Phuket only some maybe in girlfriends name etc but in the end its farang money that purchased the property.

Its not only phuket, thai company or girlfriend ownership is all over thailand. In Phuket its mainly Russians isnt it ?

No matter the ownership, All condos "can" be rented out monthly, and the rental return is often very good, 5%-10% return on purchase price.

that is if you can rent it out. Have a friend who has a house and condo which he rents out, both vacant for months now.
  4. When I grew up the parents were responsible for the actions of their kids. If the kids broke something the parents paid, if the kids were totally out of control the parents lost custody. This world is going to hell quickly. There is no respect for anyone or control of any kind anymore. Parents are too stupid or too lazy to control their good for nothing kids. I think it is time to do as Israel does with terrorists and hold the family responsible and take or blowup their homes. Make the entire family pay for the terrible upbringing they gave their kids. If this was the case parents would teach their brat kids to behave and terrorists would think twice before putting their family's life's at risk.

  5. 1.71 trillion baht divided by 35 is 48,857,000. That is not very close to the estimate.

Oh, if you take that number and divide by the 33 million expected bodies, you get about 50 baht per.

The Thai government people have never been able to get the numbers right.

    Time for some Excel lessons?

I think you need to calculate those numbers again. See my prior post, I think I may be correct but maybe not :)

  6. Round figures .... 1.71 trillion Baht, that's about 49 billion dollars, and with about 33 million tourists, that's about $1,500 dollars spent per tourist. ( I know some spend more some less) Not too bad except that half of that for Chinese is the flight and other transportation, 25% is the hotel, and the other $375.00 is for food, tours and crap all from Chinese owned businesses. I would guess for Chinese perhaps about $50.00 per might get to local businesses like bars, 7/11, restaurants, street shops, etc ....

49 billion dollars is not really that much for a country for an entire year considering that Bill Gates has that much sitting around just by himself.

  7. It doesn't matter what they reveal if the media doesn't bother to report it...

TV News Feasts on Trump Controversies While Ignoring Hillary’s Scandals

For example, the lingering questions about Clinton’s handling of the 2012 Benghazi attack drew only 77 seconds of evening news airtime from January 1 through June 7. [77 seconds in 6 months]

It's hard to find much news on Hillary's scandals - ANYWHERE outside of right-leaning news sources . One of the few exceptions is a recent CNN report about this...

Because people are sick of it. We've had, what... seven or eight Congressional Benghazi probes all investigating different aspects of the event, and all have been a huge snooze-fest. Your tax dollars at work.

    Benghazi is only one scandal.

You would have to search to find mention of these scandals anywhere in the MSM, or even on the pages here.

Those are real, serious scandals. Not stupid things she just said at a rally.

BTW - Does anyone tired of gridlock in Congress, or how the Republicans go after Obama...do you really think calling Hillary "Madam President" will slow them down one bit? It will all get worse.

No, if anyone is in for a rude awakening, it is Clinton. Then if Trump wins in November, it will be a rude awakening for everyone else.

Best chance for America to start fresh is to vote Libertarian in November. :) Gary Johnson isn't rude and he isn't a criminal. CNN will have a Libertarian special later this week, watch it and make up your own minds.

I like many things about the Libertarian party and Green Party platforms. I think their picks are also both honest. With the young generation and so much information on the Internet it would not surprise me if these two independent parties win 20 or 30 percent of the vote. This will perhaps put the power to pick the president in the House. Times are a changing and I think for the best ! I just hope somehow Bernie gets back in the mix.
  8. Clinton has and will continue to have more money than Trump for this race. Trump got great news coverage before but now perhaps his free coverage will be less and the money he needs, which he doesn't have, will increase.

I still think we are in for a few more surprises during this election. We now have 4 parties running but I think we will see one more Republican come into the race soon. If no one gets the required 270 votes the House will be electing the President and this would be a Republican.

  9. Very sad... I hope that the mother and family will find a way to carry on. The only thing I can say to comfort them is that he was probably very happy up until this terrible event. Justice in Thailand, maybe but I would not count on it. If this guy really ran over him he should be put away forever, period... But this is Thailand and I don't think they really care about what happens to farang or even Thais unless it affects tourism.

Motor bikes can be dangerous in Thailand even for experienced riders. 81% of the traffic deaths are from motorbike accidents. If possible best to always ride in a car.

  10. Singapore is designed to make you part with your money and doesn't exactly give you value in return.

The place is hurting badly, from an economic POV, so they will welcome your custom even more.

Universal Studios and are overpriced and the queues for the rides will waste a whole day. Also be wary of the so called iconic things you MUST do…they ail drain you of all your cash in return for scant enjoyment.

Things like having a drink on the top of Marina Bay Sands at $25 a pop….with snotty service.

Simple things are best in Singapore.

    Do:

    1. Check out hawker centre food…Newton, Maxwell etc.

    2. Visit at least one seafood restaurant in the east coast park.

    3. Singapore Zoo is the best Ive ever seen

    4. Gardens by the Bay as someone else said

    5. No one shops at Orchard Road any more….it's way overpriced and all the overcharging goes to cover their insane rental charges.

Universal Singapore is a little smaller than the one at Orlando but still done very well. If your partner is Thai and has never seen anything except Thai attractions she will be blown away. Unlike others here on TV, I think the rides are great. I recommend Revenge of the Mummy, Madagascar A Crate Adventure, Transformers, and for cute but well done Sesame Street Spaghetti Space Chase. My Thai gf and I went this last Christmas Day and it was packed but had a great time. I did however get the VIP pass which was expensive but we didn't wait in any lines and saw everything. If however you go on a week day in July the lines should not be too long but it will be hot and perhaps it will rain. Get there at opening and hit the rides I spoke of first while normal lines and not too long.

I also recommend going to the top of the Marina Sands and seeing the light show and the city at night. The Gardens by the Bay which others have spoke about and is near the Marina Sands is also fantastic and a must see. Combine both the Garden and the Sands in one evening. Enjoy your stay but expect to drop a few dollars, it's expensive compared to Thailand.

  11. 'chits' have been used in bars forever here in LOS. I can remember buying a drink for a girl and she got a 'coupon' or 'chit' for each drink. At the end of her shift she was given money for the number of 'chits' for that day's drink commissions........

In the case of massage it may have been quite similar, for each massage during that day she has a 'chit'..... At the end of the day she is paid her commission for how many massage (customers) that day. or since they were good for 30 days the girl could collect after saving a number of them (only concern maybe losing some 'chits' by holding them too long).....

As far as name of beer suppliers, I think the establishment was just taking advantage of a 'free supply' of paper 'chits'.........

As far as 'chits' for police they probably worked on the same basis..............

Doesn't work the same at a massage. When you choose a girl at a soapy massage you go to the counter to pay and the girls number is taken down on a ledger and this is how she is paid. She's not given a chit.

Did you read the article, they said the girls were given Chits to pay to police, not for them to get paid.

You are correct but perhaps the girls payment for lady drinks work the same way as in a bar, given a chit that is claimed later for payment. Normally Thais will sit and chat with the girls before and after their massage.

I think they were only guessing that the police given the chits.
