  1. Top of the Props: Thailand climbs into world top three

    Thursday, May 2, 2013. Ivan Radford @themovechannel

Thailand became the third most popular property destination in the world last month, according to TheMoveChannel.com’s Top of the Props. The country accounted for 6.78 per cent of all enquiries on the real estate portal in April 2013, a share that took Thailand into the top three countries, its highest ever ranking.

  2. I first came to Koh Samui 13 years ago when it was still a bit of a hippy paradise. It was about the time that the film version of Alex Garland’s book The Beach – starring Leonardo DiCaprio – was released.

Suddenly there were lots of people all milling around Thailand looking for the perfect stretch of sand and hoping to find a never-ending party.

But while it had undoubtedly changed a lot from the island coconut plantation it had been when first discovered by tourists in the Seventies, it still seemed very authentic to me.

Happy as sandgirls: Denise and daughter Betsy on the beach - there was plenty for both to do

What I particularly loved were the local people, who were really kind and very nice – I remember how much I’d enjoyed that first visit and had been waiting to go back ever since.

This time around, however, I would be seeing the island in style. And I wasn’t simply coming on holiday, I was in Koh Samui for a friend’s wedding, someone very close to me whom I’ve known for 22 years.

  5. Lower-end hotels on Samui Island may feel annoyed by the baht's appreciation because they cannot raise their room rates, though fancier hotels will charge more.

"I hope the uptrend in the baht will not keep going on too long," Tanongsak Somwong, president of the Tourism Association of Koh Samui, said yesterday.

Four- and five-star hotels plan to hike rates by 8-12 per cent this year to cover rising costs, mainly driven by the higher minimum wage. That means the resort island may lose its competitiveness in the market, he said.

The four- and five-star hotels are selling rooms for Bt4,500-Bt7,500, while tourists are facing less purchasing power after their currencies are converted into baht.

Room rates on the island have remained flat for several years because operators worry about problems if they raise rates at a time when the United States and Europe are in financial trouble, resulting in fewer tourist arrivals.

The island has a stock of 16,000-18,000 guest rooms.

  6. Police chiefs in the Thai capital, Bangkok, have come up with a new way of punishing officers who break the rules - an eye-catching Hello Kitty armband.

The armband is large, bright pink and has a Hello Kitty motif with two hearts embroidered on it.

From today, officers who are late, park in the wrong place or commit other minor transgressions will have to wear it for several days.

  7. If he finds it or ever gets a new one I suggest the following I posted in an other OP:

I have had a app on my iPhone for a long time (well 2 actually). The first is called "Find my iPhone" and it works from my computer (Mac) to give the coordinates of where my phone is if it gets lost or stolen.

The other is called "Gotchya" and it is a Cydia app that if someone steals my phone and tries to put in a wrong password the front camera automatically takes a snap-shot and sends their face picture strait to my computer with coordinates. Then I just show the police the persons picture and give them the coordinates when they tried to use a password.

But of $800.00 I never leave it anywhere anyways so it has NEVER been stolen.

Can't find the app gotchya in apps ?

  8. We pay 20 baht @ the local shop, because someone in their wisdom decided to do that instead of the 15 baht that was asked.

We only use it for cooking & coffee so it is exposed to high temperature. For drinking we buy the small bottles from Makro etc.....

Similar , only used the large bottles for tea/coffee and cooking

If drinking , would always buy nestle or just drink beer :)
