  1. Donation to the customs widow or orphan pension - that's a good one :whistling: .

We are a freight forwarder, not a trucker. What the truckers do, is their business.

And yes, I clock about 30 to 40,000 km a year. And yes, I get stopped here and there. I just totally ignore all those attempts of asking for a bribe and keep asking for a ticket. In 90% of all cases they let you go.

Such a hypocrite. Come on, 90% they let you go ... Yeah what about the other 10%?

Do not bother. you have already contradicted yourself.... You pay like everyone else.

i have done business with Raro on many occasions

i have found him to be 100% honest and reliable in our dealings

its easy to point fingers when you are not in business and don't go anywhere but the mean streets of Pattaya.....

  2. timekeeper it was all normal yesterday too.

i walked from walking st to soi 2 at 10 30 am up to big C and back down soi 6 and along the beach about 13 30. everything as usual

they normally set up at about 7-30 but there was nothing there at 9am

i will check with them tomorrow what happened and report back

  3. timekeeper where are you getting this duff info from about deckchairs and ice boxes etc going missing from? jomtien tourist information?

i walked the pattaya beach today at 10 00 am and all was normal.

read your post and went back at 16 00 to see what was going on.

answer nothing out of the ordinary, still jet ski's still deckchairs still umbrellas still ice boxes. In fact even more ice boxes as a load of stalls selling food ,drink,s and the usual tourist tat.

it is true that a small number of seats have been moved from in front of the hard rock hotel but only to put up some pics of the royals on a stand.

once you are past that it's a sea of umbrellas again.

as they put the beach stuff away at the end of the day and fireworks are let off at night i cannot see tomorrow being any different

it was from one of the beach owners themselves in an area near the Montien were we go to regularly

they were told by Town Hall officials and the Army that everything had to be cleared away and removed and not to come back until Sunday

thats exactly what happened yesterday, at 9am there was nothing on the beach so we went to Jomtien instead

we also went to Jomtien today based on the information we were given

if its changed again in the interim period then that would be good news for the beach vendors who were very upset at the loss of income

maybe they protested at city hall and got it changed

i will have a look tomorrow morning

    thanks for the update

  4. when one looks at the the overview of the Pattaya forum at any time of the day or night , it always says :

Replying to News Flash -- Sunrise Taqueria Coming To Jomtien!

    Jingthing -10 minutes ago...............

    Flattery with get you everywhere.

if you are not getting paid for this with free food or money, you dam_n well ought to be.........

  5. How busy do you think it will be Friday night? We're going for sure on Saturday as it seems to be the "big" day for the show...but considering driving out near Bali Hai pier to park Friday night for a short while to see the show.

personally i think that Friday will be the better night when considers the line up:

7.30 pm. Fireworks show by European fireworks teams from Germany, Italy, and Denmark(20 minutes).

8.30 pm. Fireworks show by Thailand, Republic of China, Japan and Australia (25minutes)

not to negate the others teams efforts but the Chinese show is always superb and the Italians have such flair and style

you know where i will be,,,,,,,,,

  6. anyone thinking of heading for Pattaya's beaches should bear in mind that all chairs, umbrellas, ice boxes and the beach vendors themselves have been removed whilst the firework show is going on

the Army are around the area supervising the removal and a beach clean up prior to the event

    Chomtien is business as usual

  7. yes indeed

i have always used the same guy for 8 years

he has made rings from pictures, changed stones around, dismantled my gold watch and re-polished it, and many other jobs, he is utterly trustworthy

he has recently moved from his old shop down a little soi, which i knew well so i can only describe where he is now

his new shop is on the lower part of Pattaya thai

the section after Tonys market and Mityon motorcycles

its on the left side approaching the beach

its between the traffic lights at 3rd road and the yellow Bank premises

almost opposite the cycle shop on the other side

if you get to friendship, you have gone too far

if you do, park there and walk back towards the 3d road junction

    i hope that helps NL

'yes indeed'... do you mean this is the same guy that I was asking after? Boon from Kelly's Gems?

Otherwise is this a reliable chap that you have used for 8 years and highly recommend? Either way, good to know. Thanks!

i don't know Boon but think its not him

this guy has always been an independent when i have known him

his work is excellent, he is an older Ed Asner looking man

he made a ring that Tom Selleck wore as Magnum from a small picture

    he guessed the dimensions

my friend was delighted with it

  8. whilst i have secured a few minor connections for buying flooded cars but i would like to buy more

i want modern, flood damaged/insurance written off vehicles to export and dismantle for parts

i will buy most late models of cars, vans, pickups, Suv's etc

i have cash to buy them and tea money to secure them

i will be happy to pay tea money for genuine leads that turn into deals

so if you are a foreigner who has have a relative who is an insurance assessor or maybe a senior admin guy in an insurance company

then have a word with him , both of you may earn money

  9. IN BIG C , North Pattaya

in the area where the multiple shops sell telephones on the upper floor

in the middle of the circular sales area is a little booth with a plump guy and his wife working

its only small but he does the repairs etc for all the shops.

he is very competent and not expensive

    i hope that helps

  11. The Jolly Friar had good Battered Dory, but the tasty but enormous Beefeater chips put me off from going there again. Is the chef too lazy to cut a potato into more then 4 pieces lengthwise?

As a follow-up, I went to the Village Chippy last night. I thought the fish (Dory) was slightly inferior to that of Jolly Friar. I ordered the large portion and was very disappointed to see maybe 8-10 Chips in the container, they were fortunately not the Beefeater size as mentioned above but were still a smaller (50%) version of Friar's Beefeater. The taste was OK, not great, I had a feeling they were frozen.

Are there no chippy's out there that do a standard size, hand cut chip from fresh potatoes, well-seasoned and cooked to perfection?

    Fish & Chips Review #3:

    Goose's Fish & Chips (2'nd road)

I excitedly wanted to review this place after a poster said that their F&C were better than anything on offer in the UK, and as expected that was an exaggeration but it was still worth the visit.

    What I ordered:

    Large Dory & Chips w. mushy peas & B&B

    Onion Rings

    - For Fish & Chips the order took a surprisingly long time to be served (10 minutes), but it was 20 minutes to closing so perhaps they had prematurely turned off the fryer.

    - The chips were about average for what you would get in the UK, fresh & tasty, thus excellent by Thai standards, however the portion size was typically Thai, a small handful of chips not unlike the other chippy's I've been to, at least they were normal sized chips and not the ugly Beefeater style I've been previously exposed to over here.

    - The Dory was great and the batter was tasty and crispy, however the portion size (fish, excluding batter) seemed 30% smaller then the other Chippy's I've been to in Pattaya in that he fish was sliced thinner, thus the fish to batter ratio was poor (50% fish, 50% batter). In the other Chippy's the fillet was a thicker cut so the ratio was perhaps 60% fish, 40% batter.

    - I cannot comment on mushy peas since I have no expertise on that, I just made a mushy pea sandwich with the fresh thick slice of bread.

    - The onion rings were not good, perhaps 10% onion and 90% batter, and were all clumped together (improper care in cooking), looked like an enormous onion bhagi. Dousing them in malt vinegar did not help. FAIL

    Verdict:

Best so far if you stick to the Fish & Chips. I'll explore the other fish options on my next visit.

    Rankings:

    1. Goose's (Chips win by far!, Good Fish)

    2. Jolly Friar (Good Fish, poor chips)

    3. Village Chippy (OK Fish, poor chips)

    More to Come!

    Follow-up Visit to Goose's Fish & Chips (2'nd road)

I will have to diminish my enthusiasm for the Fish & Chips here at Gooses, the Chips are great, best so far, but I am disappointed with the fish. The fish tastes great but the portion size for a large portion is more like the small or regular portions we get back home, so because of this I shall not be ordering Fish & Chips from here again, I will return for sure, but will try something else on the menu with the tasty chips. I cannot be bothered trying the small size portion of the fish, but if anyone else has please comment

Next Review: Pig & Whistle Pub

    Fish & Chips Review #4:

Pig & Whistle Pub (Soi 7)

    What I ordered:

Fish & Chips w. mushy peas

    Cheese & Onion Sarnie @ 90 Baht

    Magners Cider

    - The chips were not fresh cut, but at least were of standard chip size, average taste

    - The Fish portion was enormous!!! 4 thick fillets (in pairs), definately 100% larger in portion size then that of Gooses, and the batter was tasty and crispy almost equaling that of Gooses = WIN!!!

    - mushy peas tasted better than Gooses version

    - Sarnie was OK after I re-assembled it to my liking: came as 2 sandwiches with large, thick slices of fresh bread bit I found the cheese filling fairly minimal compared to that of UK, thus I dumped the cheese contents of the 2nd sandwich into the first sandwich, thus making a double-filled single sandwich, Also, I did not like the sliced onion in the sandwich, I prefer it as a mince mixed with the cheese, thus I removed all the onion and minced it myself before putting it back into the sandwich. The result was an OK sarnie but I will not order again

    - They have draft cider, any cider = WIN!!!

    - ambiance is better here then in all other F&C joints I have visited COMBINED, for 1 hour I felt I was in a real UK pub = WIN!!!

    Verdict:

Pity about the chips, but Best so far for Fish. Will return 100% in the future, perhaps Fish & Mash will take-off

    Rankings:

    1. Pig & Whistle (Fish win by far!, OK chips)

    2. Goose's (Chips win by far!, Good Fish)

    3. Jolly Friar (Good Fish, poor chips)

    4. Village Chippy (OK Fish, poor chips)

if you want draught beers including cider on draught then you need to go to Punch & Judy on Soi 17

in my opinion , its the best English type pub around here

food, service, beer selection and ambiance is excellent

i recall the fish & chips were ok too

i have to drive 15 kilometers to get there and never regret it..........

  12. @sotsira - Yes, I wonder the same, also when you see all those second hand telephones for sale. But what do we know.

@timekeeper - My favorite was a Citizen watch very similar to this one:

    solareco-drivewatch.jpg

A dive watch similar to this

    bk3150-04e.jpg

One a bit like this, but with a golden faceplace and without the movable ring on the face (don't know if there's a word for that)

    washington-nationals-mens-general-manager-ser.jpg

And then there's Ms Conners watch, something (but not exactly) like this. This is probably the most important; she was very attached to it as I bought it for her when we were still dating, about 20 years ago :(

    SXDC43P1_2P.jpg

I guess they're all, except perhaps the first one, kinda ordinary, but if they were all to turn up next to each other that could be a clear hint.

ok Phil i will keep an eye out for them

i love mooching second hand shops and markets aimlessly

    now i have a purpose............

ps the rotating bits called a bezel

  13. Nope, no pictures or anything - but I wouldn't mind paying a reasonable price to get at least one or two of them back.

I had a look at the shop opposite the Pattaya City Condo (?) - on a corner, right? No luck.

I heard about the old guy and his son running the watch shop in the fish market before, I'll try to pop in there tomorrow.

it may help us in the hunt , if you were to offer up a description of the pieces stolen

  14. We have had these TV pissups before and will have them again. Not sure if we'll attempt it before the holidays, maybe we'll kick it off in January. By then drop in and say hello, don't be a stranger

Fisticuffs? Never saw any problems, everybody has always been very friendly at these events.

    internet_tough_guys.jpg

that's good news then Phil and simply re-enforces my thoughts that most contributors here are no more than internet warriors....

  15. i am sorry to hear that Phil, do you have some pictures of them or models or even serial numbers

do you remember any distinguishing marks that are specific to these watches

    bruises, scratches etc?

if you find them you will need some evidence to positively identify them as yours

    as to likely candidates

all second hand shops will take watches

the city pawn shop on Soi 6, i guess so but they are strict on ID confirmation so its unlikley they will go there

there are many second hand shops but some specialize in watches

one example might be the second hand shop opposite the pattaya city condo (?) on Pattaya Thai

its on the left side as you are approaching the junction with 3rd road before the secirity camera shop

rimmer will know where that is

it maybe 500 metres before you get to the junction

i am not suggesting that he takes stolen goods but he often has better quality watches for sale like rolex, breitling, cartier etc

if i had a good watch i was desperate to sell, i would try him first

    i hope that helps

    good luck with your search

if there's anything specific you want me to help with then Pm me

  16. Is there something like a favorite mod on Thaivisa?

Well then come and say hello to your least unfavorite mod :)

you could volunteer as target for cake-throw-in-the-face-by-angry-members....whistling.gif

anyways...I cannot make it, have another business event on short notice on that night. Might catch you guys later, though...

having bore witness to some very acrimonious exchanges on TV , i would have thought it highly likely that there may be more than cakes thrown at each other by angry members if they were to ever meet up in person.......

i was actually referring to the possible outbreak of fisticuffs between the members, not between members and the mods

you guys have no need to resort to that kind of thing as you have the ultimate weapon, banishment to other forums!

sometimes the pen is mightier than the sword...........

  17. Come and say hello to your favorite mod. The usual suspects will be in attendance. :)
