  1. Yeah Tony is yer man in Candy Shop, not the most pleasant of individuals but he will fix you up.

i have known Tony for over 10 years

in the ''good old days'' i used to ship shirts in 25kg boxes

his attitude today, is a reflection of the number of time wasters and big talkers, he has to deal with on a daily basis

i have seen them in there many times

big talk of frequent big orders, beat him to death on price then take away a couple of ''samples'', never to be seen again

if you deal professionally with him then he will deal professionally with you

  2. I am looking for a stereo head unit with GPS capability that uses Garmin maps. I see on-line that Kenwood has teamed up with Garmin, but other than this I know nothing.

Either double DIN or the flip out screen type will work as this is a custom installation

My local high end shop in CM has no idea

Anyone familiar with one of these units?

have a look at this thread

i think you will find what you are looking for:

  3. I have 2 pure breed great danes we were not planning on breeding but unfortunately the girl is now pregnant.

If you are serious and sure you can provide a good home PM me for any interest or more details.

She should have the pups in the next few weeks.

    what colour(s) are the parents?

  4. I paid mine at 7/11 yesterday evening.

But I am not in Jomtien. Is this a local thing confined to your local 7/11 ??

i heard that some 7-11 were restricting payment acceptance of electric bills in certain high crime locations to cut down their target risk of a robbery

  5. whereas you might be used to Arthur Treachers and think its good........

I don't. I have had great fish and chips in San Francisco and a number of places in Australia, but never in England.

i am thinking you answered that in a purposely ambiguous manner, so lets get to it

either you have never had great fish & chips in England or you have never been to England

    which is it?

  6. I am not discounting your opinion of Goose's, but in Thailand, IMO one visit is not enough. I do not know of any restaurant in Thailand that is totally consistent about making Western food well.

Did you try the dory at Gooses? That is all I eat there because it is so good and the cheapest fish on the menu. I agree that it is not cheap and that the portions are not very big, but to me, the excellent quality more than makes up for it. It is the only place in South East Asia that I have had fish and chips that were as good as a decent place back home. wai.gif

i did not try the dory

i always have cod as first choice

that way i can compare like for like at different places

i mean if you can't get the most expensive menu item right then is it worth a second try?

if i go again maybe i will try dory and compare with other dory offerings i have had in other places

as to being like home, it depends where you call home

i am from the Uk, where it all started and theres nowhere around here that comes close

to qualify that, i have eaten F & C at this years 2012 chippy of the year, Seniors and at the 2nd and 3rd placed finalists

also at the Cottage, a 5* fish and chip shop in an independant guide to chippys and recomended by the TV seafood specialist chef Rick Stein

so whilst i am not a F & C expert, i can claim to have eaten at some of the best that the UK can offer, which might just give me an edge in the taste stakes

whereas you might be used to Arthur Treachers and think its good........

  7. Like with so many things in this town, home cooking is the answer!

Imported frozen cod and frozen chips are probably going to beat the locally produced version every time. My local Tops daily has packets of frozen chips for 99B that look quite tempting.

But even so the Chinese ought to be able to grow decent spuds for chips: they have the climate.

The Chinese do grow very good potatoes in the north. About fish and chips in Pattaya-Jomtien, I mentioned a place earlier but have to know reverse what I said (will not say the name). I will say, after eating and several places, the fish and chips at Goose's is #1.

Yes Goose's is #1, mainly for their fresh cut chips which unbelievably no other chippy's want to do. I wish Goose's had a larger/thicker fish portion, I'd gladly pay the difference.

ok, i have finally tried Gooses now so i can say with some confidence that i have eaten from the main contenders in Pattaya

so heres what i think about Gooses

Cod fillet was very good, nice light batter, good sized portion & likely the best i have had in Pattaya

chips were ok but small portions (i counted x20 thin cut chips) and were slightly hard and i felt were underdone

mushy peas ; small portion not exceptional taste , a little on the dry side

battered sausage; small size not jumbo, pretty uninspiring

after all the hype on here, frankly i was dissapointed with Gooses,

in my opinion, for the best fish & chip & extras supper in Pattaya you might need to shop around to gather together a top meal:

    cod -gooses

    dory-jolly friar

chips-jolly friar for fat chip lovers and quantity/gooses if they offered a bigger portion and cooked them slightly longer

    mushy peas-lakeside chippy

    fish cake -village chippy

    battered jumbo sausage-jolly friar

best value-jolly friar, dory & chips 100 baht

overall i am still a fan of Jolly Friar

  8. Bit of an over-reaction violin.gif No problem with a difference in opinion, as long as things stay civil, is there ?

au contraire, i think the over reaction was yours

why not let them just get on with the job without trying to handcuff them......

  9. ... and a few others, such as Austria - all the others are honorary, though, as are all others (including the British ones) in Thailand.

As the new Consul's salary is 6 times what the previous ones got (and the new Consular Officer's double her predecessor's) and the two staff who came down from Bangkok for the last three months managed to get a week's worth of consular work done in a morning, taking it in, processing it and returning letters at 1 pm the same day, then finding time to do any other necessary consular work and visits before being back in Bangkok by 4 pm, and British tourist numbers are visibly a fraction of what they were even five years ago with no increase in the number of retirees, jombom's question seems a pretty valid one.

Allow me to pull apart your post and correct some errors.

    1. Honorary Consul's are unpaid. The Vice Consul position is a new one for Pattaya. Where the "6 times" part comes in, I will never know!

    2. The Consulate Officer will in fact be on a LOWER salary than the Consulate Officer who previously worked in Pattaya as she is one grade lower.

    3. The two officers from Bangkok worked solely in the Consulate and did not undertake any outside consulate work and because they were open only one day a week at that time had to turn-around documents on the same day to avoid a 1 week waiting time.

    4. Really don't mean to sound patronizing in any way but you would not have the first idea of the consular cases the Pattaya team have to deal with. Many are unpleasant and extremely challenging. Tourist numbers are down but the numbers of long stay Brits is still at a level where consular cases occur on a daily basis. Prison visits, Hospital visits etc etc.

Working in the Pattaya Consulate was the biggest challenge I have had to date and I am sure the challenges will continue. Instead of moaning about them, try and support them a bit. Trust me, they will need it.

    Howard

    (ex-Honorary Consul)

I wish the new staff well. But I also hope that appointees do not crop-up in local media outlets and in crappy staged gatherings. And that all of the consular staff refrain from being part of local businesses that could result in a conflict of interest.

    Simon

    Simon

maybe you could petition the British Ambassador to write it into the Consuls contract that there be absolutely no contact with media and that they cannot attend any event where the media might be present and god forbid, take their picture

also make it clear that they are not allowed to have any social life at all outside the job for fear of creating a conflict of interest

until then, so you are not offended, its probably best that you ask the new Consuls, preferably in person, that they not to attend any local charity events, or any British expat clubs to impart information to British expats,or to attend British expats in hospital, or the morgue, or at the scene of a disaster or any tragic events involving British expats or indeed anywhere outside the confines of their humble office in Jomtien, where the media might possibly turn up to and report their presence away from their desk.......

  10. thank you for responding HM

i for one am looking forward to a response from lecavalry

every time the British consul/embassy/ambassador/honorary consul is mentioned on TV he responds in a derogatory manner

he sure has a stick up his arse over it

i think he got turned down for the job!

  11. well you truely lost me on that one Darrel <deleted> sort of reply was that - hardly helpfull

not sure all the gold shops would accept gold from just anyone and hand over cash, expecially 9crt gold of a distinctly western origin,

all gold shops, will buy all quality of gold if you have an ID

robbers usually send the girlfriend /wife into make the transaction

if its 9k or 18k she says a farang gave it to her

prices offered are standard percentages of the daily price of 24k gold

they usually send to melt down, not buy to resell unless its a particularly ornate piece

so i am sorry to say that its highly likely you will never see this again

however i wish you luck and i am sorry for the upset this theft has caused you

my wife had 3 baht snatched years ago so i know how angry you are

a bit of general advise here, take pictures of everything.........

  12. [

But the OP also asked for positive comments and you ignored that one so don't pick on other posters.

Yes but I am reformed now. See Post 12.

You mean the blatant thread hi jack for one particular operation that I have reported ?

I really have no idea what you're talking about now, but I suggest you chill out.

why not send him a PM to re-inforce your message??

  13. I understand the comments about the LA Burrito. But that is only a name. I am being very specific about what I like there: LA Burrito with pork. I wonder if the people who are commenting on it have actually eaten it.....the specific one I am mentioning. The reason is because there are many items I do not like at some of these places, so I am trying to focus on what is really good at each one. Some make good pork items; some make good beef items, etc. No, the LA Burrito w/ pork is not the same as in Los Angeles. But I do not care. I am not in Los Angeles. Timekeeper, thanks for the tip on fajitas at Hard Rock, but please be specific: pork, chicken, beef? I think this thread might help people order the right thing at the right place. Thanks.

    sure no problem

i usually go half and half on chicken and beef

that way the wife gets to steal some from the chicken side
