  1. Stories of big drug busts are commonplace here but when will the problem be addressed at the source ? Unless I am mistaken most of the drugs are made in Myanmar, smuggled into North Thailand and then distributed throughout the country. Myanmar needs to take some responsibility here and maybe a joint task force could be set up to seriously address his problem.

  2. The reconciliation process cannot even begin as long as groups larger than 5 people are still not allowed to have meetings. It's high time to lift this ban for the new year. Yes corruption needs to be addressed too but I think the ridiculous defamation laws need to be changed first. People are reluctant to report corruption when they fear they will end up being sued for defamation.

  3. Selling the remaining 42 planes in storage will be a painful pill for THAI to swallow because it will involve significant losses but these planes will not increase in value (particularly the A-340's) as they clog up Don Muang and other airports.

They don't need more foreign advisors; they need an experienced foreign CEO who would be given a free hand to reduce staffing and make other changes without government interference. Until this is done the losses will continue.

  4. An equally annoying problem is the overloading of the baht buses. They refuse to leave South Pattaya for Jomtien unless 6 people are sitting on each side (which is uncomfortable) plus a few standing on the back which I refuse to do. I have seen as many as 15 passengers on these vehicles which is too many. There should be legal limits.

  5. The banks are to blame for a lot of this, very hard for average Thai's to obtain a loan even if ever so small.

The ones who are benifiting off the poor are scum they know they can offer lower interest but greed is what it is all about.

Banks are also to blame for extending too much credit to some people, well beyond the ability to repay loans. I am sure many of the people who use loan sharks have already exhausted the credit lines with banks. I think many here do not live within their means.

  6. I have an FX USD account at Bangkok Bank...the only extra id required was my US Driver's license..no guarantors......opened this account at the main office as I live nearby. The advantage to an FX account is that you can convert dollars to baht any time you feel that the exchange rate is advantageous. I would never want an ATM card for this account though as all of my transactions here are in baht and I already have an ATM card for one of two baht accounts I have. I can transfer up to $10,000 online from USA account for $10..it costs about $16 to receive this amount at Bangkok Bank.

  7. My ATM card from Bangkok Bank lasts 10 yr I think which is too long for normal wear and tear. In USA automatically get new card every two years. I too was told I could not have internet banking but could try to apply anyway. I wrote a note at bottom of application that I would move my funds to another bank if I was not given Internet access; 5 days later received password in my e-mail.
