  1. I know what you mean. I find it annoying when I accidentally turn off the num lock and the number pad stops working. I'm just guessing but maybe it has to with keyboards that don't have separate number pads like on some laptops. But then again if it is full sized keyboard why would they include it? looking at my keyboard there is another wasted key that is labeled "scr lk". I think its scroll lock but when I tried it the screen still scrolls. unsure.png

  2. I read about that today also here. The Meizu pro 5 is definitely a good phone and running it with Ubuntu is an exciting option. I also agree with your reason for wanting to ditch Android/Google. It sounds like the biggest drawback is that there are not many apps available to chose from for Ubuntu.

I'm keeping my eye on this one too!

  3. It is interesting that HGST is owned by Western Digital.

HGST is a wholly owned and independently operated subsidiary of Western Digital Corporation. http://www.hgst.com/company/company-info

I bought a Seagate 3 TB external 2 years ago and it failed at about 6 months. Same as the OCZ SSD I bought. Failed, and OCZ tried to replace it with a smaller drive and still replaced it with a different model. Never OCZ again!

  4. I had my 90-day report successfully processed online on Monday this week.

On Monday, Tuesday and now Wednesday I have tried to do the same for my wife but consistently get a message to contact my local Immigration Office (Phuket).

Has anyone else had this problem?

Does the Immigration website not allow processing of more than one report every three months from the same PC. It hardly seems likely.

    Cheers!

Hi Tap, I'm in Phuket and I get the same message. I have not yet had a successful online report. My next one is due Mar. 12 or near there. I'll try again and am hoping for a successful report but not banking on it.

  5. It is related to the underpass construction to install new drainage prior to the big event. Nearly 2 months so far & not looking like it will be completed very soon & probably have to do the other side as well. No sign of alternative roads being built which was listed as part of the works. Only existing narrow sois. Widening the approaches to the circle would help while the underpass is being built but cannot see that happening.

They said that the drains was going to be complete in 20 days.

    I love their optimism.

    Money can't flow fast enough.

  6. 10 baht in Kamala as well, but I boil mine before I drink it.

Then is it actual drinking water, if you feel you have to boil it before you drink it?

It is after I boil it. Not too difficult. One large pot takes 12 minutes to boil. I use one pot every 2 -3 days.

I suppose I could boil my well water and call it drinking water too! My thai neighbors drink it without boiling. It tastes okay, but I'd rather drink better tasting water for a bit more money.

Your Thai neighbors drink it than indeed it is drinking water! They drink your well water? It would be interesting to see what you'd pick in a blind taste test. Just stop trying to put me down cause I chose to boil my 10 baht bottled water. It's getting a bit petty.

  7. The train/tram would be going to Phuket Town. They would not dare piss off the taxies by taking tourists where they want to go.

Chalong is not where the tourists want to go - places like Patong, Karon, Kata, Kamala are where many tourists want to go. But don't worry .. the vultures (taxi mafia) will be waiting at the stations to fleece the tourists wanting to go to their hotel.

Yes, that's what I was implying. They would not build a line down the west coast taking tourists where they want to go. That would piss off the taxies. So there would be no need for the taxies to blockade the train if it goes through Phuket Town. If I were a tourist I would not bother taking the train to another station and then a taxi to the west coast either. I would just take a taxi directly from the airport. Again a win for the taxies.

As NKM says "The Phuket transport mafia controls the movement of passengers here, not the Government".

  8. Do you actually drink it straight? I tried it for the first year I was here and couldn't drink it. My well water tastes better!

I do, and pay even less at 10 baht. I collect it in kata though, IMO better than the rawai drinking water.

  9. Big opaque bottles. 12baht for 20 litres. Available all around the island.

  10. I was in Chiang Mai about 13 years ago with my friend who was getting married to a Thai lady. His fiancee and her sister dropped us and the sisters daughter at a monkey show and told us to go to the elephant camp next door after the monkey show and take a ride while the two sisters went to take care some some last minute details for the next day's wedding. When we went to the elephant camp we were the only customers in sight and taken to a very large boarding platform that had benches built into it. Could have held 20 people I think. There was one elephant on the boarding side that was to be our ride. After about a half hour with the three of us sitting up there in the sun waiting to go for our ride we were getting hot and thirsty so my friend offered to go find some cold drinks. So me and the Thai girl who was about 6 years old give or take waited and watched our ride to be elephant swaying to and fro as they do. There seemed to be nobody else around not even staff were to be seen. Then out of the blue some Thai guy comes running up the stairs of the platform and picked up a piece of wood that looked a bit wider than a 2x4 and starts beating the elephant on top its nose. I could see no reason for this and the little girl buried her face in my lap. After the beating which seemed a long time but was probably 30 to 45 seconds the Thai pos disappears again leaving me and the girl to wonder what the heck that was all about. That's when I noticed the elephant's nose was covered in pink splotches. I'm guessing from previous beatings. When my friend returned with drinks I told him what happened and that I was not going to ride that poor beast or with those people. He agreed and as it had been almost an hour of waiting we started leaving. By the time we got to the entrance they saw us and came running out saying where you go and its okay we can go now (for the ride). My friend just made gestures of beating someone with a bat and asks why you beat elephant asking several times but we just got blank stares in return and we left. I still have not taken an elephant ride in Thailand and probably won't.

  11. For the last 10 days a guy with a chainsaw has been waking me up. He has been clearing the mountainside behind my house. Some of it was old unused rubber trees but they have gone beyond that clear up to the top of the ridge. Hundreds of trees felled. They have bulldozed/leveled one lot already. And with the land they have cleared they can and probably will do many more.

What does this family whose compound I reside in do for a living????? All taxi drivers!

Been in this house 4 years and it's time to move on.
