I'm wondering if shipping is similarly affected. Perhaps not.

There are presumably fixed overheads on aircraft that still have to be paid, and any aircraft bought on finance which is not in the air with 80% of the seats filled is a money pit.

Most shipping now is cargo related, so that should not be affected too much. If the world shipping industry goes bankrupt the world economy really is in trouble.

Oh dear, the UK may have to buy them from the EU, manufacturing inefficiencies showing up already, never mind, as yet there will be no customs snarl up

It's hard to remember that the industrial revolution started in Britain and Britain probably led the world in manufacturing till at least WW1. Seems they were so keen to destroy industry in Britain post WW2 that they can't really make much at all any more. Don't make their own cars, don't make ships, don't make planes without other countries helping. Rather sad, really.

Yes, overpopulation is a real problem, and the root of many other problems.

Actually it's not the virus who scares me, but what will be the reaction of billions of people to the huge economic crashes, which will be inevitable if this situation lasts for half a year ?

Agree 100%. all the restrictions may save many, but ruin the economies of the world to the extent that many more will be reduced to poverty, and then it'll really :hit-the-fan:.

they can train students for a one task function easily enough and the thats all there is to it.

Hmmmmm. The ( nursing ) students might have other ideas about that. After all they should actually know something about what is involved. I'd be interested to know if they are trying to get retired nurses to be prepared to work in hospitals if it does go wrong, though many were so happy to get out of the NHS that they may be reluctant to go back.

The economic fallout from this pandemic is going to be staggering.

IMO think the depression but worse. At least during the depression most people kept working, but if it goes on like governments want, thousands of small businesses go broke, tourist industry goes down the tubes ( and that's everyone connected with tourism ) and millions stay at home, what will be left when it's all over? Seems to me the "cure" could be worse than the disease.

What a joke, do they realise just what is involved.

1st a design. then it is unlikely any company can make all the components, let alone medical grade, so this needs to be an open sources very basic, no frills design, with specialist companies tendering to make the components.

All the disposable components are made from plastic ie OIL, which the climate change people want to stop being pumped. Bet they change their minds now.

Much of the machines are also made from plastic, as are all syringes, IV components, instruments, etc. Hospitals use vast amounts of oil based items.

I am supposed to fly back to Australia for ten days tomorrow. Now I am being asked to self isolate for 2 weeks, which would be done at my parents house, they are both over 75. Then I don't know if I'll be allowed back into Thailand in 10 days, as it could have gotten crazy by then.

So I won't fly. The ticket was cheap, I don't think a refund or even change of date was allowed. Does anyone think I have a chance of getting anything back from the Qantas? It wouldn't have to be money, another flight on a different date would be fine.

They should give you back the tax, if nothing else.

Sure all systems have faults, but the for profit system has the "by definition" fatal flaw.

There are some things that the for profit system does better given the incentive, and then there are others .................. Public health is not one to be left to human greed IMO.

The government should have a "Manhattan Project"  working on this continuously. SARS was not the last virus and I guarantee you, this one is not going to be the last one also.

Perhaps an International effort is requires, something similar to the Large Hadron Collider project.

Good example. They'll spend untold on a machine that doesn't save a single life, but nothing on preventing things like Corona.

that wont go down well in the land of bs

That reminds me of when I told a ( western ) female friend that my Thai wife put my shoes on for me. She was so offended at me that I didn't tell her anything more about all the things a Thai wife does that make them so much better than a western model. Seemed a wise thing to do.

    Ok, thanks. Let me try.

I am already fed up of my money going to raise kids who aren't mine.

My first ( western ) partner managed to get me to support one of her children financially till I left her. I was really stupid back then, but I wasn't alone by any means. Western world is full of men supporting stepchildren.
