  1. What has any of that got to do with having a break with families at Christmas? Were you ever in the military? I was.
  2. First class leadership?????????????????? You have some evidence for that? When I was a member paying their salaries they were IMO completely useless. The union that did nothing to benefit their membership.
  3. I'm surprised the RCN is actually doing their job ( at last ). When I was a member they were useless at getting a decent wage. More interested in hindering nurses than helping them. Everyone that is now going to be blaming nurses for causing cancelled operations should remember that they have benefited for decades by underpaying nurses and that it's well past time nurses took action to get what they are worth. Most people IMO would never do what nurses do, and certainly not for the wages they get.
  4. You think soldiers are not human, don't have families, don't need a break like everyone else?
  5. Up to you. I was retired and had plenty to do, even when living in an hotel. Certainly never thought spending my time getting boozed was good thing to do.
  6. I learned not to watch any Hollywood movie featuring women as the main actors eg the Ghostbusters remake. Just annoying.
  7. IMO it's not long before they dispense altogether with real actors. The Avatar movie proved that real people not needed to make a great movie. They have come a long way since Final Fantasy the spirits within.
  8. Which is why I'm watching DVDs from op shops. all some years old and mine for a couple of $ or less. Even in the past they made some movies that were garbage though. I enjoy the "not Hallywood" movies the best, and the less popular often the better.
  9. Actually not mad at all. The age of AI/robotics is already on us, and millions will be made redundant. The more that can be employed on something the better, or would one prefer millions with no purpose in life?
  10. The more realistic version of the OP is the new "small" nuclear reactors that have been developed with proven technology. Built in a factory and transported to wherever needed. Apparently safe too.
  11. This just gets better and better!
  12. OK, but if they are in such hardship they have to walk to the US, how can they afford to pay the smugglers, and who is paying for their food etc.
  13. Changing the government would, IMO, be as useful as rearranging the deck chairs on the Titanic as it sank. Britain, IMO, needs more than tinkering around the edges and ignoring the real problems.
  14. I doubt any government of any shade could have avoided what is happening. The problems of Britain are deep and have been ongoing since WW2. I also doubt that any government of any shade can fix Britain without reforms that would be unacceptable to a government that wants to be re elected.
  15. Given that you are on ignore, I never saw that to have a look.
  16. You actually know they were rednecks, or are you just making that up?
  17. That was large on the radio yesterday. Other than the two cops shot dead another had a bullet graze, and a police cadet managed to escape unhurt.
  18. or an island with a bamboo shack and little else. Seriously? Never been to north east Phangan or west coast of Lanta Yai? Nice life style and I doubt a bamboo shack to be seen.
  19. OK. For bars, night life, city life, malls etc Pattaya was better ( I can't say if in last couple decades it's as good as, as last visit was after tsunami ), better beaches on Lanta, Railay and even Phangan. I knew Phuket well last century as went to Patong to find a temporary GF to go to Phi Phi with. Back in the 90s Phi Phi really was paradise, but it got ruined by too many tourists, so that was no longer an option. After that I went to Pattaya to find the beach GF and went direct to whichever beach I chose, whether east or west coast. I'd occasionally stay in Phuket town a night while catching a bus back to Bkk, and I did stay overnight to visit Fantasea Show ( very average beach there ). One of the main reasons for not going to Patong was the taxi mafia, and no equivalent of Pattaya's 10 baht baht bus service. They didn't even have a coastal bus service, and had to go all the way into Phuket old town to go a different beach for a look. I once walked from Patong to Karon, but never again. In the end though, Phuket just didn't have what it takes to make me want to stay there, to make the effort. Pattaya was a short bus ride from Bkk, and had everything, so why bother with an overnight bus trip to see the same things?
  20. I never was so unfortunate as to ride in an Imp, but I owned a Hillman Hunter for many years. So rusty that in the end it probably had more filler than steel. Nevertheless it was reliable and lovely to drive. I was sad to see my old faithful go to the scrapper, but couldn't get parts anymore from wreckers.
  21. I think everyone knows that, but TAT is never going to admit it. I used to get the magazines put out by local tourist agencies ( Pattaya, Phuket, Samui etc ) and they were all full of ads and articles about bars and massage places with claims of getting happy with the girls.
  22. LOL. Pay thousands of $ ( flights, insurance, hotels, taxis etc ) to eat Thai food when every city in western countries has Thai restaurants, pay thousands of $ to get pummeled, pay thousands of $ to sit on sand as if sand isn't closer to where they live, the last category I can agree with. Tourists may do the above while in LOS, but do they really want to go to Thailand because of the first 3? I was occasionally approached in Bkk by a group of young female uni students doing a survey on why tourists visited, and I would say something about beaches and temples, but I never said the real reason I visited LOS.
