    Doesn't mean they are right by wanting to elect Labour. The debacle of the "New Labour" government should never be forgotten ( I had to live through it ), and when it's a question of which party is the worst option, IMO that still belongs to Labour ( is it just Labour now, or still New Labour? ).

    It may not have been me, but it's certainly what I thought. I said before he became PM that at least he was amusing and we would be entertained. The "amusing" didn't last long as PM, but the entire time he was PM was "interesting" at least. I liked the Boris from before he became PM, but even though the office changed him ( and not for the better ), I thought it a mistake to change leadership when all about is chaos.

    Carrying one of those would get me in doodoo if I used it and the cops got involved. Seems the government doesn't want us to defend ourselves. Just get get beaten up and then the cops can write it up in their files. So few of them around that calling them for help would be a waste of time.

    Suggest being at immigration early and avoid anything that would attract attention of the cops on the way.

    As had I, but it's not a good beach to walk on. Had a large bar scene when I was there.

    Some/ most of the resorts were taken over by the big operators after the tsunami, so I doubt it's cheap.

    Gulf coast south of Chumphon was the cheese for me. Lots of little resorts to choose from. I stayed at Sanawan B and B for a month. Wife and I had the beach to ourselves. BBQ on the sand most evenings.

    Any beach with longtails is a very big NO for me. Noisy <deleted>. Lanta west coast didn't have any when I was there. Presume water can get too rough for them. Haad Khom is nice, and I could easily stay there a month. Close to village.

    LOL. It's a prime tourist beach on Samui so you think the room rate would be that cheap? LOL. Cheaper rooms on Phangan. N E has best beaches. You could try Than Sadet as you recommended it so highly.

    I lived in London for 10 years and worked with people from all over the world including Africa, and never once did anyone of any origin complain of racism in my hearing. Seems like an attempt to make a mountain out of the proverbial molehill, by those that profit from such.

    IMO we have been "on the brink" since humans decided that MAD was a good idea. A flock of geese almost induced an American nuclear strike back in the '50s. If it happens, it happens, just like tsunamis, volcanic eruptions etc. Other than on threads like this I don't even think about it at all.

    If it was as bad as you apparently think it is, why would anyone want to risk death to get there?

    If life in Rwanda was like a holiday camp the numbers crossing the channel would likely increase. The point of the exercise is to dissuade people from crossing the channel in rubber boats and sometimes dying because of it.
