Along with the education of the local numpties that having steep sided 'ponds' with no easy exit if someone did accidentally fall in is lunacy
Agree totally, I've noticed these ponds many times up in the villages and always thought bout how you would get out of them if you went in. Even an adult would be hard pressed on some of them to get out let alone children.

If your fear consumes you, so be it, it's not my cup of tea.
My fear doesn't consume me; a clean cup of tea is what I'm looking for without getting dysentery in the process.

Kind of off topic; but has anyone who uses these bottles that are refilled and brought to you ever had the water tested? I use one of the trucks also and would like to have their water tested, but don't know where to get a test done. I've heard both good and bad with some of these companies. You don't want to take a chance on your health with drinking water. I've been in Thailand long enough to not trust the wording on the bottles, ie, reverse osmosis treated, filtered, ultraviolet. I'm sure some of these companies do all that, just as I'm sure some don't. Buyer beware comes to mind.

Maybe the real Buddha/god/allah whatever entity they believe in, was trying to tell them something. Better they heed the warning.

Very strange that the person in control of the boat didn't turn the boat around and look for her....for as long as he could--say, until they're close to running out of fuel. Plus all the passengers getting calmly off the boat at the pier--without Tangmo...........hmmmmmm.

Uh oh, the news outlet mentioned the name of the pubs--errr, restaurants, get ready for the defamation lawsuits! Or is that only when a farang mentions a name of an establishment that the lawsuits happen?

A fool and their money are soon parted.
Greed is an ugly thing.

In my many years in Thailand I've always wondered why they don't have more swimming lessons--from birth, as too many children here drown every year. Plus as many have said; parents need to be more responsible.

I use a disc lock but have seen cases where thieves just pull up in a pickup and lift the bike into it. I guess if a thief wants it bad enough they'll get it somehow. You just kind of hope whatever you do is a deterrent and they move on to an easier target.
-
Be careful if you have an older Honda Wave; a relative of my wife got his stolen in Pattaya--and it was a real POS. The police told him thieves are targeting these especially. I guess they must be taking the engines out and selling them because there wasn't much on the bike worth selling.

I thought foreigners could already own 1 rai for residential purposes.........at least that's what I've heard for 25+ years. Saying that I've never heard of this rule being used, probably one of those "TIT" things that is so convoluted it never comes to fruition.

This is the problem with security bonds - the landlord holds all the cards.
Yes, I found this out the hard way also. Same situation; rented for a year, fixed things that were broken--never called to tell him they were broken as I didn't want to have to pay more for him to fix things, kept the yard watered, and left the place in better shape than when I started......didn't get any deposit back, landlord was just full of lame excuses why he wouldn't give it back. Never again!

Other reason, as other posters have said; loan money, not out of spite, stubbornness........just based on history. I learned many years ago, you don't LOAN money to an Asian, or the Asians I'm around anyway. Once burned shame on you, twice burned shame on me.

Good to see Thailand's setting records, just like the US is in COVID cases! Go team Thailand/USA!
-
A Kasikorn bank manager told me if you're an American they generally won't open new accounts for you because of all the paperwork involved with the US govt, supposedly money laundering laws. There are certain branches that will do it, depends on the manager.

Ohhhhhh yes they would.
Agree, and confiscating bikes would work also. I only mention bikes because the majority of accidents during the 7 dangerous days are motorcycle riders.

I always wondered why it is mainly the Thai women that gamble, not the men. Maybe the men are too busy earning money and the women are spending it.

he would IMHO be better advised to open another bank account into which he should stick 800k which he should then leave untouched year round so as to minimise the risk of potential similar scares arising in future.
That's exactly what I do, makes things a LOT easier. Saying that; I had a friend that did the same thing for 30+ years and a few of the immigration officials questioned why the money never changed. Of course they couldn't do anything about it since he met the requirements.

Thai gold is around 23-24 carat, anything under that you won't get much for it....if anything. Plus a lot of shops will only buy if you bought it at their, too much fake stuff around and they won't take the chance.
