  1. Did I say that I go about and arrest people? I don't even talk to them, I ignore them. It just gets on my nerves.

Agreed speaking with Thais that are less than fluent in English and to develop your Thai skills is one thing. But I still believe that to really learn and communicate in a language resorting to filling the gaps with your native tongue isn't the best way to progress. Most people actually just use the Thai words that most Thais already know the English to.

When I was first learning, my comprehension far exceeded my oral communication skills. I had a few friends that were that way with English. So I would talk in English and they would talk purely in Thai. Neither of us had any problems having quite in depth discussions. More than just everyday chit chat. It wasn't until a few years ago to where I progressed to the point of actually forming complete and articulate sentences in Thai. I am still no where near fluent but I hate broken language skills in myself so it is just as annoying in others.

However, I am purely talking about when expats are talking to other expats. When it is obvious that both are native English speakers, it is absurd to use any Thai words or expressions unless it is someone's name. I went to the wat lastnight when using temple is perfectly accurate. I ate some fallang food instead of western.

The worst for me is when I hear someone say "soi dogs" That isn't even a Thai expression.

No it is an English expression, I use it all the time when speaking English as with Wat, Soi and Falang.

Sorry but it seems more appropriate, I am in no way trying to speak Thai!!

I would not say I saw a westerner get bitten by a street dog on street 9 near the temple. ( I think I would sound like a wanke_r)

I would say I saw a falang get bitten by a soi dog on soi 9 near the wat.

  2. I just got back from yet another border run on the 16th. I paid nothing nor have I ever been asked by a Thai offical or any immigration persons for money. The days of being asked for cash at the visa window are over as well.

You just have to know how to deal with what comes up, deflect the interaction and move on.

Sorry many of you are taking as saps - obviously they seem to be asking the right people for free money becasuse you are giving it to them.

SORRY - BORDER XING VISA ASIDE IS VERY FREE. FREE.

"Farangs that have no business going to Poipet" - Speechless

I have made this run dozens of times and have dodging all the extras down to a fine art and I always buy an evisa online.

Still last time I went, approx 6 weeks ago I was stung for 100B as described in the op and no I could not get out of it.

I did try asking them to show me this charge in righting, refusing to move away from the window to "go wait over there" ect, after a couple of minutes arguing and with two boarder police about to forceably move me to "go wait over there" I tossed over 100B and was on my way. My guess is that if you have a few hours to kill they would probably eventually let you go if you made enough of a scene who knows, much as I begrudge paying I am not going to try to push it any further.

Satcommiee Thanks for your helpful comments BTW non immigrant "O" visa is a proper visa!

Unless you think you know better that the Thai Consulate that issued it!!!

  3. "This morning went down to have breakfast in soi 7 and asked for srcrambled eggs with bacon and toast. Service lady says only cannot. Ask again then she says extra that is the all. Okay i say then meal comes out with scrambled eggs and two fried eggs <deleted>."

Come on you gotta admit this is funny. cheesy.gif

  4. Sat on Pattaya beach for the New Year celebrations last night, directly opposite the Police station, I was shocked to see one Drunken Farang guy, run from the bars like a madman, onto the beach, waving his arms, singing, dancing, holding 2 very large fireworks, he lit up the first one, dancing very close to it, then the second one, he kicked it after he had lit it, it was shooting into the water,, he was not happy, so he kicked it the other way, onto hundreds of people sat enjoying themselves including small children. The firework bolted into the crowds along the floor, everyone was petrified, it hit one lady on her head. This behaviour is disgusting, and the guy walked off back to the bar. The trees were also on fire with the chinese lanterns, the market stalls had to pack up as the tents were catching alight. I never saw one policeman all evening. A very dangerous evening.

So at least there was some good come out of it. The Market should have been cleared out in the daytime, just too many people and not enough space. Really not a good idea to have the market there on NY Eve. Or if they wanted to keep the Market then at least the road should have been closed.

Not used them for bike insurance but for car a few times, good service and prices, at least one in the office has very good English.

Her name is Da. Think they were or maybe even still are forum sponsors.

Their office is in the Soi to the side of Big C South Pattaya.

  6. Jeeez KevKev! Now we know where we´re not going! I like fireworks but I hate it when they explode behind my back.... I want to come back home in one piece.

I would defiantly recommend a view of the bay at Midnight, trouble is you will have people letting off fireworks from just about any part of the beach. Would think the Beer Garden must be one of the best spots, but expect it would be rammed, don't know if they do anything special for new years maybe tickets?

  7. If you like to live dangerously Soi 7 is a BLAST, eye protection recommended!

Last year saw one of those big mortars fall over and explode in a bar.

Actually I think it was the wrong way up.

Ok so these are the screen shots.

I thought I had fixed it by doing this

Creating a new browser user profile

If your browser user profile is corrupted, you can create a new user profile to replace the broken one:

    Windows instructions

    1. Exit Google Chrome completely.
    2. Go to the Start menu > Run.
    3. Enter one of the following directories in the text field, then press OK.
      • Windows XP: %USERPROFILE%\Local Settings\Application Data\Google\Chrome\User Data\
      • Windows Vista/ Windows 7: %LOCALAPPDATA%\Google\Chrome\User Data\

Locate the folder called "Default" in the directory window that opens and rename it as "Backup default".<li>Try opening Google Chrome again. A new "Default" folder is created automatically as you start using the browser. If you wish, you can transfer information from your old user profile to your new one. However, this action is not recommended, since a part of your old profile was corrupt. With that in mind, to transfer your old bookmarks, copy the "Bookmarks.bak" file from the "Backup default" folder to your new "Default" folder. Once moved, rename the file from "Bookmarks.bak" to "Bookmarks" to complete the migration.

It seemed to have worked for a while but now they are back, also the problem is not just on TV or Chrome, same on IE and any site with google ads.

  9. Hi

Anyone have any recommendations for a Taxi service from the Darkside into Pattaya.

Someone reliable who I can call at short notice, must be able to take the booking in English.

    Cheers

  10. Hi I am having a problem with TV at the moment.

All the sponsor adds seen to have been taken over by Satellite Direct.

Every time I try to navigate I get an annoying popup asking me to confirm I wish to leave the page as a live agent wishes to offer me a discount.

After confirming I want to leave numerous times it eventually lets me, this is happening on every TV page.

Cleared cash and cookies by still same problem?

  11. So the Indian guy asked the girls to go back to is hotel room assuming they were prostitutes, and got mugged for asking?

Had he kept it in his pants he would've been in a better position.

"Mr. Nirjun explained he was walking along the beach opposite the Montien Hotel with friends when a group of two women and three men approached Mr. Nirjun and attempted to take items from his trouser pocket following a suggestion the women join Mr. Nirjun at his hotel."

It's quite clear in the story they approached him, if you want to take that to mean the exact opposite then up you. blink.gif

Just make up your own story.
