  1. So you had obviously had a drink - how many, were you drunk??

What is the legal limit here?

    Thanks

Yes I had had 4 small Leo over about 3 hours.

I was not drunk but I knew I would be over the limit.

The limit I was told was 50 I blew 75 one of the Thais had apparently blown over 300!!

I have no complaints over the way I was treated but it was clear from the off that I was a different case to the Thais and That there would certainly be a negotiated under the table settlement available to me.

What would of happend if I had turned this down and said take me in? Again I dont know. But I doubt I could be deported? or could I?

So in fact you were treated better than the Thais as an easy way out was offered to you but not the Thais...............nice to see the BIB treating visitors/expats with a bit more compassion than the locals.

Max fine for Thai 10k. First offense 3k.

For myself, yes It looks like I got off lightly at 11K.

We have reports on this thread of 30K

    Deportation with a 5yr Blacklist.

Sure we are treated better than the Thais.

  2. For the curious:

    * When a person gets caught drunk driving he will be arrested.

    * If during a weekday (working hours), you'll have a big chance of being carted of straight to court, where following the law you'll be fined between 2,000 and 10,000 Baht (first offenses in Pattaya court gives you a 3,000 Baht fine). You'll also get between 3 and 6 months probation, meaning if caught again in that period, ticket straight to jail!

    * If outside working hours, you'll be carted off to the local police holding cells, where you'll have the possibility of posting bail, usually between 10,000 and 20,000 Baht. Until your court appearance/fine, after which you will get your bail money back.

Now, all the above is all there is to it for Thai Nationals. For foreigners, it doesn't end with the above! Below applies only to foreigners:

    * After your court appearance and payment of fine, you will not be released.

    * Since you, as a foreigner, have just been convicted of a criminal offense (which drunk driving is in Thailand), you will be escorted back to the police station under which jurisdiction you had been arrested, which has the duty of handing you, along with your freshly acquired criminal conviction file, over to the local immigration office.

    * Local immigration will then void your visa, as per the law which makes this mandatory for all foreign convicted criminals!

    * Which then means you will remain in custody of immigration, until you can produce a flight ticket out of Thailand, when they will escort you onto the airplane (after coughing up transportation fees for the escort!).

    * It is at the deporting immigration official's discretion to allow you to leave on any flight out, or only on a flight back to your home country!

So, no, the cops are actually not trying to put the fear of god in you for a relative small offense, it's just that if you get processed following the law, and you are a tad unlucky at immigration, it can end up a pretty expensive trip back home (long haul flights at short notice tend to be expensive)!

BTW, you will net get blacklisted unless you manage to make an utter idiot of yourself during the whole process...

Please what is the source of this information

  3. Just read this in another TV thread.

    http://www.thaivisa.com/forum/topic/460913-songkran-revellers-set-new-human-wave-record%3B-road-death-toll-down-30/

Quoted from a story about Songkran road safety in The Nation.

"And all drivers are not allowed to drink alcohol. Anyone violates the ban will be jailed for up to three months or face fines of Bt2,000-Bt10,000. Moreover, [bus] companies will be fined Bt40,000 as well, which will affect renewal of transport licences," Kamol added.

According to this then 10K is the maximum fine.

Problem is the Police don't want to tell you this as they want as much cash in their pockets as possible.

If you were to insist on going by the book then they would probably make things as difficult as possible for you.

  5. So you are bragging about bribing your way out of a drunk-driving charge...another quality fareng in Pattaya.

I knew I would be opening myself up to judgment by posting this.

I am NOT in anyway bragging, just telling what happened is all.

No idea if or how much my wifes contacts changed the outcome.

I got the impression that the police where overstating the consequences and looking for an unofficial payment.

That's the way things work here rightly or wrongly. I was definitely treated differently to the Thais.

What where the consequences for them? No idea.

But perhaps a warning to others.

  6. Just to let you all know the Police where out in force yesterday afternoon.

I myself was stopped and breathalyzed on the the railway road.

Myself and about 5 Thais where over while I was there.

Who knows what the actual official fine or punishment is?

I was told for Farang big problem, have to stay Monkey house 2/3 days wait to go court pay 20K, Deportation and mark Passport cannot come back Thailand.

The Thais where carted off on the back of a pickup, while I had to wait for my Thai wife to turn up.

When she did her best contacts where called, many phone calls between many different police and 1 hour later told have to go police station but not inside big boss would meet us outside.

    Paid 11K.

  7. Chiang Mai started in earnest this afternoon. How about Pattaya?

Yes, told there was guys at Beach Road end of Soi and 8

Well it was dry on beach road this afternoon, although I dint go down soi 7 or 8.

  8. Blind man Massage Nakula soi 20.

Nice pool Sauna Steam Massage and small Gym.

Not expensive i think 150B all in (not inc massage) extra 120/150B for that.

    No extras here.

But if you go down to the beach at the end of the soi their are some girls/???/Boys working the bushes.

  9. 13th, 14th, 15th is the official national holiday.

Pattaya therefore will start on Saturday 9th, officially finishing Tuesday 19th, but will probably drag on to the following weekend - ie. approx 2 weeks.

    Enjoy...............

It will not "drag on to the following weekend"

19th is the finish and I have NEVER seen water throwing anywhere after this date.

  10. Yep, Beverly Plaza is worth the 200 baht for sure. It's kind of "peasant Indian" though and isn't likely to please Brits looking for tikka masala or some such. Plus, free water.

The 300 baht buffet. Can you be more exact about the location? I'd like to have a look at it.

If traveling 2nd road from Klang toward North rd, past Big C on the same side as Big C.

You will see drinking street, I think more or less opposite Tiffany, drinking street is a U shape and has 2 entrances onto 2nd road.

The restaurant is on 2nd road on the corner of the drinking street entrance closest to Big C.

I don't know if they offer anything over and above the Beverly Plaza but if they do it would be worth a visit.

If you go look or try let us know what you think.

  11. Well I must admit I like very much the buffet at the Beverly Plaza Hotel just across the road.

Again basic only 1 chicken dish 3 or 4 veg dishes and bread but at 200B good value.

There is also Spices2 on third road offering basically the same but not in such a nice environment.

Also there is one I noticed the other day, next to Drinking street 300B but I don't know what is on offer there.

  12. I was down there today too watched the same scam going down.

The old Sheik guy is one of the scamers, the friendly interpreter.

The policeman with the tash walked up from another scam going on at the next hire point just down the beach.

In that one the hapless hirers had come off the ski and turned it over.

Oh no surly not, salt water inside the engine, very bad, wow

The last time I saw them pull this one I saw the cash change hands 40KB

There was nothing wrong with the ski and they had it out on the water in the same place the next day!

  13. Hi

What I am planing is simply to buy some land and build 3 or 4 houses for sale on it, possibly to continue on to more projects after completion.

I am in Pattaya and have been with my GF for 4 years although not married. We currently own a small house 2M Baht (in my GF name with a 30 year lease) we will sell this and buy the land and build a basic house to live while completing the other 2 or 3 houses once sold we will complete the last house in which we are living and either keep as our home or also sell.

I have a friend also from the UK, he is an experienced builder and I will be his apprentice he is retired and is not necessarily looking to make money out of it (although I will obviously give him a percentage of the profit) he just wants to help me out to the point that I may be able to continue further projects on my own. We will be designing planning sourcing and delivering materials and will use Thai labor. Now obviously we will also be doing some building work our selfs. I will be financing probably an additional 3M/4MB Baht plus the 2MB from the sale of our house total approx 5MB/6MB.

Now if I could own the land I would simply do privately and hope to fly under the radar, now I do trust my GF but 100K+GBP is too much to have in her sole name and anything could happen in the 2 years or longer required to complete the project.

    What are my options?

    Start a company?

    What dose that involve?

What are the requirements eg number and nationality of staff directors etc?

What protection dose this afford me eg 49/51% Thai has control?

Would we both need work permits?

Is all this just overcomplicating things, incurring extra expenses tax etc and drawing attention to myself.

I really know nothing about all this so ANY advise would be great.

    Many Thanks

Ps Please be gentle with me.

  14. I spent six months looking and eventually gave up. Anything under 1m/rai is either 20km out of town or in a terrible location. Sellers will not budge one inch on price. Most of the sellers weren't told that a farang was involved.

All the land I was interested in still seems for sale. Pattaya is ok but is not worth it at 1.5m or more per rai.

I have a contact(Thai) that not only lives in the area mentioned, but works in the business of buying/selling land/premises.

They have a 'special' arrangement so that they get first offer on 'Repo's' and I have seen some first hand, so this is not BS.

    PM me if interested.

I would send you a PM but doesn't seem to be available on your profile page?

  15. No. i did it very soon after.

^^^You didn't have to wait 3 years before splitting then.

    Ever heard of that?

That rule became law only around 2006 I think and was part of the then created zoning map.I know because I bought 5 Rai in Pong during that time and it would take me 12 years to have it split up into 9 plots.I was lucky I could sell it again as a whole and with a profit to the same agent from who I bought it.

The rule was created to stop the land speculation by foreigners.

    Hmm

A bit of a worry as I am looking at a little under 1 Rai in Huai Yai, I would want to split it into 3 plots.

How would I find out for sure before purchase?

Just go to the land office with a copy of the Chanot and ask?

I know the current owner has had the land for more than 3 years.

  16. Anyone have any up to date info or ideas on the price of land on the Darkside?

Is this stuff selling and if so for what prices?

I am particularly interested in the Huai Yai area as am looking at 1 Rai on a main road not so far from the temple.

Also earlier in this thread monty stated "Remember, most of the area here you have to own the land over 3 years before you can split it in smaller patches..."

    Is this true?

If so cannot the current owner split it up first then sell me the multiple plots?

    Many thanks
