Wow, a minor assault charge, to background check on all foreigners in Phuket. That escalated fast. i wonder where the issue of gangsters in Phuket came up? In a Western country it’s a case of assault and would be dealt with in a minor court without much fuss and bother. A fine, suspended sentence maybe. Over and done with. here it’s a national incident, partly because these days Thailand is ruled by “netizens” and viral videos. If there is a viral video, the bib and various other authorities are on the case. No viral video, not interested. This guy was a jerk and should pay a price. National incident requiring 24/7 news coverage? Nah, not really.

Given the number of foreigners entering and exiting Thailand, a percentage of whom are bound to be up to no good, this sounds like a slow day at the office for immigration, not something to shout about. i’d expect double this everyday if they were doing their job right

So, when Thai people complain about why they couldn’t go to their hotel room, they really mean go to their hotel room AND close the curtains. Bolt the door in case a passerby opens it? Stay for immeasurable time? pretty sure that most foreigners have to go through visa hoops to do that. You know, the ones where you have to hold a cash deposit in a thai bank, take photos of yourself in your own home, photocopy quite a few documents and THEN, even when you have a visa to stay, not immeasurable time but 1 year, report to immigration every three months to report your whereabouts, or report to immigration if you spend even one night outside of your own home. you know, those kind of hoops.

Can’t see that the thai government will make much of this. They want S Koreans to visit Thailand as tourists so won’t want to start a tit for tat war ( no pun intended) in any case, what does the thai government care if a few Thais get treated badly trying to enter SKorea? There’s no money to be made in objecting and if the Koreans did a deep search for Thais working illegally in SKorea, they wouldn’t come up empty

Do you have some metrics that support that comment? leaving aside the carnage caused by rampant gun ownership, the obvious racism evident in some states, the damage to democracy caused by the electoral college system of voting; a number of the usual metrics utilized to rank a country actually make the United States seem to be doing rather well.
