British Pensioner Struggles with Frozen Pension in Thailand
wensiensheng replied to webfact's topic in Thailand News
There is nothing that says this lady paid NI all her life. She might have, or she might have been a wife and mother who stayed at home while her husband worked and paid NI. the rules might be regarded as wrong by some, right by others, but they are the rules and people take personal decisions based on them. Perhaps she didn’t think she would live so long?- 478 replies

Police break up network aiding foreigners to stay in Thailand
wensiensheng replied to webfact's topic in Thailand News
“Thai police have dismantled a vast network that illicitly…..” I wouldn’t call one Russian woman with 100 marks a vast network exactly. There are probably others out there doing the same thing. the crime here is listing Russians as employees of company’s so that they could get work permits, when in reality the companies did no business. -
Police break up network aiding foreigners to stay in Thailand

I think that the companies did no actual business other than holding a condo in which the Russian resided. And yet the Russian obtained a work permit via the company so as to be able to stay in Thailand. -
Thailand Considers VAT on Imported Goods Under 1,500 Baht
wensiensheng replied to webfact's topic in Thailand News
I believe that if they happen to open the package, they then look up the value of the contents online. that’s what happened to my nephew when he had a drone sent over from the UK. He had to go to customs to collect it because they intercepted it and was arguing it had a low value. The customs officer just opened his computer browser and looked up the retail value. -
British Man Arrested in Thailand for Posing as Tour Guide
wensiensheng replied to webfact's topic in Koh Samui News
“The arrest marks a significant step in the crackdown on illegal tour operations in Thailand, highlighting the stringent regulations governing the industry.” I’m not sure that catching one random guy in the act is such a significant step. There are plenty more. -
New Tax Rules for Expats in Thailand Spark Concern
wensiensheng replied to webfact's topic in Thailand News
I do t think a farm workers abroad are the target. Super rich Thais who have overseas business subsidiaries/business who delayed send money into Thailand in order to use the loophole, yes. or how about super rich Thai family with a few hundred million USD, who keep the money in overseas bank accounts and remit the interest only after one year has passed. Those are the guys the change is targeted at. The farming crowd would be below the tax threshold anyway. -
New Tax Rules for Expats in Thailand Spark Concern
wensiensheng replied to webfact's topic in Thailand News
Of course I do. And since January 2024 all of that income has been paid into a newly opened separate “income” account. All remittances to Thailand come from the “capital” account that predates January 2024. obviously I can provide bank statements to show all income being credited to the “income” account with no remittances to Thailand, and most importantly bank statements of the “capital” account showing remittances to Thailand and no income being credited. My only real query is whether I have to fill in a tax form to declare no taxable income (I have no Thai income at all), or whether I do not need to fill in a form at all. -
New Tax Rules for Expats in Thailand Spark Concern
wensiensheng replied to webfact's topic in Thailand News
I have started segregating income from capital. In January I opened a separate “income” account and all income generated on my capital goes directly into that account. All remittances into Thailand come from my “capital” account. Statements to prove it of course. waiting to see if it is valid -

So if I live off my capital and don’t bring any income in to Thailand, or earn any income here, do I still need to fill in a tax return? no taxable income to declare will be a nil return if so -

What happened to the mantra of “quality” tourists? the average student, Muay Thai, cooking etc, and digital nomad is pretty young and living on a limited budget. -

Once out of intensive care, that’s probably a good idea. For one of them anyway. -
New Mobile Banking Rules Aim to Curb 'Horse' Accounts
wensiensheng replied to webfact's topic in Thailand News
Thanks for the particularly impractical and convoluted suggestion. it shouldn’t be hard to work out why someone would want a post pay SIM card over a pre pay, but you seem to be having difficulty. just think about it a little longer and see if anything springs to mind. Two sim phones. SMH -

New Mobile Banking Rules Aim to Curb 'Horse' Accounts
wensiensheng replied to webfact's topic in Thailand News
You are flat wrong when you say that there has never been a requirement for a work permit in order to get a SIM card, IF the SIM card is post pay. Prepay has never been a problem. whether the situation has changed, I don’t know but for sure in the past a post pay sim needed a work permit. i guess I will update my knowledge by checking with the phone company -

Same problem for me. Bank account in my name, but sim in Wife’s name for donkeys years. Because the phone company won’t give me a postpay SIM card as I am retired and hence don’t have a work permit. -
Cannabis crackdown: Only marijuana buds return to the blacklist

It won’t go back underground. Buds will be there alongside all the other plant parts and a regular pay off to the police will ensure that there is no issue. your bell analogy is so true. -
Migrant Workers Occupy Korat Home of Thai-Australian Couple
wensiensheng replied to webfact's topic in Isaan News
Exactly the point I have made several times. Thailand isn’t ruled by law, it’s ruled by social influencers. Once they get involved, the police, local authority, government, will start to take action. Without a social influencer preferably backed by a video from a mobile phone, nothing gets done. -

Russia and Ukraine? You are wrong on two counts: 1. Prior to the recent conflict and certainly prior to the annexation of Crimea, a lot of Ukrainians and Russians regarded themselves as “ brothers” with a lot in common, Holomodor notwithstanding. 2. After the illegal invasion of Ukraine by Russia, there has been outright conflict between the two nations. How is that like Thailand and Myanmar? Perhaps England and Scotland is a good example, but Russia and Ukraine never. Their relationship has been at the opposite ends of the spectrum, but not in the middle where ancient hostilities have been overridden by economic necessity. Just ask my Ukrainian daughter in law. She’ll fill you in.
