  1. On my iPad 2 the only time I get the not changing message is when I connect my iPad to my laptop USB - even then I still get a trickle charge -the battery charge is always increased by a few percent

Maybe it is worth checking to see if there is a known issue with iPad 3s or maybe you were just unlucky and got a Friday afternoon iPad

  2. I use Apple TV in chiang mai. I watch hockey, you tube etc. I don't think Netflix is available in thailand. I may be wrong

I think you can get netflex but have to set up a VPN.......a friend is working on this now. Will update.

Yep - but I think you have to set up the VPN on your modem / router as I don't believe the Apple TV itself has an option to allow you to set up VPN

You can setup the Apple TV to use the apple account you have set up in your home country so that you can use your Home Counties iTunes Store for rentals and purchases rather than the Thai iTunes Store (which I believe is a bit sparce)

  3. It seems to me that Chinese food is localised in the same way that all national food is localised - western food in Thailand tends to be thai-ified, the Chinese restaurants I've visited in the uk are subtly different to the ones I've been to in the USA and the ones in India were different again to the ones in Thailand ;)

  4. I am having similar issues with True with random pages on the bbc website timing out - these pages are available via other providers such as DTAC and 3BB so the issue does appear to lie with True - I'll have a dabble with my modem and router and see if changing the DNS to Google fixes the issue

  5. I used my UK driver's licence to get a 1 year Thai driving licence ( you can only get a full 5 year Thai licence after the one year licence has expired)

As I remember I needed various copies of my driving licence and passport (I can't remember if I used my work permit or I'd I needed a letter of residence) and a medical certificate

I also had to take a quick colour blindness / reaction test which involved calling out the colours displayed on a traffic light contraption

I think the whole process took around 20 minutes on a Friday afternoon

You can pop into to the driving licence centre and they will give you a sheet written in English detailing all the paper work you need so you can grab that first to prepare what you need

The centre itself it located on the road to Hang Dong near the Tesco supermarket if I recall correctly - on the left hand side as you head towards Hang Dong - there is a hospital just before the centre where you can get the medical certificate

    Hope this helps

  6. My wife & I did a similar trip 4 years ago - schengen visa - cheap and easy as she's married to an EU citizen, Irish visa - cheap and easy as she's married to an EU citizen, uk visa expensive and lots of paperwork even though she's married to a uk citizen - good old GB ;) good luck with your endeavours

  7. Some visiting friends were kind enough to bring over a bottle of Pimms but I haven't been able to find any lemonade to mix with it

7up and sprite are too sweet to use as a mixer so does anyone know where in Chiang Mai to buy lemonade or do you have any suggestions for a good replacement mixer?

    Thanks in advance

  8. Went in a typical Thai liquor store today and they had stacks of tonic water - no shortage at all - just stay away from the big supermarket chains ;)

  9. My favourite event was when one of the guests at my wife's guesthouse went for a walk and got lost

She went into a 7-11 to ask for directions and one of the guys behind the counter popped her on the back of his scooter, drove her back (about 2km) and wouldn't accept any recompense from either the guest or my wife

  10. Those who demand that anyone who has less money than the poster return to their home country.

Due to a small lottery win and even smaller interest payment those few who have less money than me will know need to raise an extra £10.07 in order to remain in Chiang Mai ;)

  11. I purchaced a Ipod for my son and want to download games and music and went to the bank to open an over the internet purchase account . My wife has just complained that it's turned out expensive , he said he downloaded 1 game and a few songs and we were billed for 800 baht.

Is there extra costs and charges on top of the price of the games and songs if so could you tell me what is the actual price of the games etc

    Thanks

You will receive an email from iTunes shortly detailing what your son has bought and how much each item cost

In the meantime change the password on your itunes account so that your son no longer knows it and then he will have to ask you when he wants to buy something and you can see the cost beforehand

  12. Got to be careful going into bars around there. I wandered into one for a beer after a bit of a stroll and suddenly realised that it was bereft of girls.

But I had a beer anyway, everyone was very social.

  13. you can get all bbc radio through the bbc web site

the bbc iplayer radio app is excellent

So why couldn't I listen to The Ashes even though I pay a BBC license?

The BBC only holds the internet radio broadcast rights for certain events (premiership football commentary, the ashes, etc) for the uk

When the BBC website detects that you are in a country that it doesn't have the broadcast rights to (I.e. Thailand) it will prevent you from listening to the program

I'm guessing as the Ashes were in Australia then an Australian broadcaster was controlling the worldwide rights and only sold the BBC the U.k broadcast rights

  14. Hi there,

I'm looking to get in new tv sometime in the next couple of months and wondered if anyone had any recommendations that I can add to my short list ;)

Here are my requirements so far:

    Type: LCD / LED

Size: 42 - 46" (happy to go bigger but unfortunately Mrs Diver has set the limit ;)

Smart TV: Not required (don't want to pay for something that my Apple TV and laptop can already do)

3D: Not required (I find it a gimmick tbh so don't really want it)

    Cheers,

    Narked
