  1. Yup, no issues.

No issues even with wearing any particular color; it really applies only to shirts with a political message, like a red Truth Today or pro Thaksin shirt, or a yellow shirt with the royal emblem. (And some people of course wear those as well). And regular red or yellow garments are just fine. (Though you never know with some resident drunk Farangs to be honest)

  2. > Also, for you 'reds are peaceloving protesters' bunch, note the title of the other thread going on here 'Reds rule out talks'

Sir, it's selective reporting / malicious propaganda by The Nation (yet again) which is getting quite tiresome. Reuters (yes) reported UDD as being very open to negotiations. This was also communicated directly from UDD channels.. Some news media don't seem to like a peaceful solution, I wonder why. :)

This is out there for everyone to see.. ( Well, everyone except people/places that staunchly stick to getting their 'information' from The Nation and other establishment mouthpieces.)

  3. No test; I ran a similar poll in the Chiang Mai forum. Seems quite a lot of people are quite content to live the rural life, with limited trips into town. (Well, more than I expected anyway.) This poll seems to go the same way, though it's early days.

  4. Speaking of gays, I know a guy who was in the closet for 67 years. He moved here, came out, and met a uni grad, employed, age about 33. He's been his partner for nearly ten years.

Exactly how old is this guy PB? You say he was in the closet for 67 years, which to me sounds as if he was in his late 70ies when he came out & now hes been in a relationship for another 10 years.....late 80ies. Amazing Thailand old man. :D

Hint: Coming out of the closet is not a 10 year process. :)

  5. In the interest of fair play I think the topic should have the old men and young women thing changed to older partner and younger partner.

How about: "age-agnostic partner of any ethnic background or gender, and age-agnostic partner of same or any other ethnic background and gender, of a different by not necessarily higher or lower age" ?

  6. For those living away from the hustle and bustle of the downtown area, are you quite comfortable to stay out there most days, or do you feel you'd like to get into town (daytime or nighttime doesn't matter).

Note: For the purpose of this poll, by 'going into town' I specifically mean the beach and downtown areas: Beach Road, Second Road, Third Road, The lower end of Naklua Road, North, Central and South Pattaya Roads, AND Jomtien. So basically anything on the West side of Sukhumvit. Just gong to Tesco et al in the immediate Sukhumvit area however does not count. (I realize this isn't hyper-scientific, when in doubt, use your own judgment on what is the town area.)

Again for the purpose of this poll, anything East of Sukhumvit is out of town, as is Naklua proper, as well as points further south towards Bang Saray, etc.

  7. Um, and who said I was older? :)

    You're 22 right? :D

Do guys (or women) have to deal with negative comments regarding the age difference?

I'll let you know when our daughter hits teenage. :D I kind of look forward to it. (The Mrs. is only a couple years younger than I am. )

To be completely honest, I don't really feel that age difference is even the deciding factor in any comments, positive or negative. I think the perceived social background weighs in a lot more. I could hang out with some of the younger/cuter girls from teh office and it'd be just fine. But if I were to import one of Pattaya's finest then I'm not so sure I wouldn't harvest significantly more raised eyebrows. EDIT: This of course applies to Thai people's perceptions; foreigners, and tourists specifically, get all kinds of crap in their pink little heads, I can't begin to worry about what they may or may not think.. Bless em. :D

  8. Hi All,

My first post here. I've enjoyed the forum for quite some time as I plan on coming to CM next winter, Nov. thru April. Have wanted to do this for years and now finaly will. This thread is interesting to me as I have wondered about where I should look for a place to live. I'd like to rent a small apartment for the time I'm there but have a limited budget. I've seen small furnished apartments around CM for $200 -250 U.S. which is what I'm hoping for. But I'd really like to live "in town" , in the old town as I really like that kind of environment and like walking. I'm hoping for a small apartment rather than a hotel as I love to cook and want some kind of kitchen. Is it possible to find this kind of housing in the inner city? TIA for any info.

You're in luck, because most affordable apartments are downtown. And like you mention yourself, if you're new here (and/or without wheels) then it makes a load of sense to live in the downtown area of your choice.

Actual serviced apartments or condominiums are not very common inside the moat, but there are some. This type is a lot more common in the general university area, say Nimmanhaemin and sois off Suthep Rd and Huay Kaew Rd and the Canal Road.

I agree with you though, the old town area inside the moat has the most character; I'm sure you can dig up something that doesn't break the bank and is comfortable enough.

  9. เฒ่าหัวงู [tâo hŭa ngoo] [N] dirty old man

I was under the impression that the literal translation was "old snake head" and refers to a joke Thai cartoon character. I'm thinking the phrase should only apply to an older man who wants to have sex with underage girls and is not strictly applicable to someone who wants to have sex with much younger girls of legal age ....... or am I wrong? (again!)

It's used for any older man flirting with a significantly younger woman. Underage or worse is not implied.

  10. Mr forbes I find your posts worrying. I get it that you are still able to have sex. Good for you. Try and do it with people closer your own age. The fact that all the people you are having sex with are young enough to be your grandchildren Is disconcerting and that you are paying them equally so. I personally dont like to see old men shagging youngish girls no matter how poor or disenfranchised they are. I mean how low do you go age wise? Have you always had this prediliction. If it were me id keep it to myself. From their body language they certainly arent very proud of being in the slight bit associated with you.

Thai people are definetaly not admiring you for your ability to...............have money.

This is exactly what they ALL think about you while theyre taking your cash.

Think on and dont come back

lol. I have wondered from time to time why someone hasn't said this before.

Because surprisingly, many people aren't hypocrites and don't feel like throwing stones from the greenhouse.. :)

Now someone has and what can I say. If the shoe fits...

Absolutely, and I don't think Ian has an issue with the characterization.. I wouldn't. Still it would have been nice if the person calling him on it wouldn't have taken the ageist route.. Apparenlty his age is a factor in what he does, presumably it'd be just fine for a younger person. And, of course, Ian is a bachelor. He does what bachelors do and from the looks of it, does it well. :D Give it some time, it's only a matter of time before some lucky lass manages to ensnare him, pretty much just like it happened to most of us who came here single.. <looking around the room, watching people stare at the carpet.. :D >

My other hero is Ulysses, who somehow manages to stay single. I have a LOT of respect for people who manage that.

  11. Yup.. they're out there! I can thoroughly recommend marrying someone richer and better educated than yourself. :) At that point you can also stop worrying if they're in it for the money, which brings added normality to married life.

  12. Or perhaps "Kampaengdin Road" is Pali for a state of consciousness we don't know, you know, like "Abbey Road" ?

    literally it means wall-of-soil road.

euphemistically it means red-light area to most Chiang Mai Thais and a few farang 'explorers'.

    Wasn't that long, long ago?

Pretty ancient history. Also Santitham is now a thing of the past.

That said, the far South of Kamphaeng Din is still a fairly dodgy/lively area.

  13. Why's that?

What it comes down to, ultimately, is that you're paying for accommodation. You could do that by paying rent to some person you don't know, or you could do that through mortgage payments on a house that will belong to someone you love, and who raises your children. Given those options, I'd rather support my family than any random person renting out a property.

( And then of course there's just spending all your money at Siam Paragon, that cornerstone of the sufficiency economy. :) )

  14. Yet another sad piece of garbage.

Thanks for posting it though, it's good to see the depths this 'newspaper' has fallen to.

If the NATION just prints garbage, why do you have over 3,000 posts here? It seems you have a lot of spare time on your hands and you love to read garbage? Explain that to us please...

At one time this was a fairly balanced and independent expat forum. It only became The Nation's mouthpiece later. But it's indeed a good point you're making, I stopped bothering with the news clippings forum for a while, and the ban on political discussions in General is an incredible improvement. Blissfully some of the most rabid Thaksin-obsessed people seem to have been sent on holidays as well. So things are improving, credit where credit is due.

Incidentally, it seems that it's no longer lost on the UDD that this forum is aligned with the Bangkok establishment, it's viewed as having the same biases. That's unfortunate, especially as I (and many others) have been pretty active in showing that not everyone on here has been brainwashed with a yellow dye, but it's hard to dispute the one-sidedness in the news stories we get in this sub-forum.

  15. Yeah, that's exactly what I do. Somewhere around 9am I close all the doors and windows downstairs. Keeps remarkably cool even without aircon. (though on some of the 40 degree days I did run the airconditioner)

  16. LOL!!! Awesome.. It was inevitable that eventually you'd catch one, Ian. :D

Incredible. Ageism seems alive and well. :)

Anyway, I aspire to be a Thao Hua Ngoo some day... Or rather, to keep in check with my persona, an Old Buffalo eating Young Grass. :D
