  1. Actually in the rural area I live I suspect the women are quite shy
  2. There is of course the fact that older people Thai will possibly avoid the wide open mouthed smile due to the sad state of their gnashers responding with a thin lip smile ????
  3. Not if someone or something distracts them and you don't catch their eye, people can have other things on their mind than a passing farang At least that's the way I see it Good luck to you if uou meet happy sociable people every day I don't expect to be the main attraction and it proves to be so
  4. Right So maybe she just doesn't like sharing eating space and the op is a clean charming good looking handsome man who she actually found hard to resist and had to move away quick Or did that not fit your agenda
  5. Well I have said this before, I don't expect everyone to be happy every day, thus sometimes people will walk ride past me and not even look my way so no greeting Next day all genuine smiles, day after forced smile It's life guys, don't pretend it doesn't happen But lets not take it too seriously just get on with your own life ????
  6. Had a visitor the other day that looked at our big cow and a reasonable to good quality calf He told my wife he had sold similar both for 21k Only a month ago we were offered 30k but wouldn't sell our best quality cow I am seeing a range of 40 baht to 70 baht for live beef take an price of say 60 baht for quality non wagyu 500kg 30k is a bit short of where we were a few months ago
  7. Here is my measure, the children barely react to a raised voice from Thai elders Its too commonplace and unless repeated often 'overlooked' If I raise my voice which is rare it stops the kids in their tracks ????
  8. Thought similar for a while when I first arrived in Thailand, as a young man. Now after many years observing the whys and wherefores, now approaching, 70 not so much ????
  9. Mind is on other things than staring and gossiping, thats for those with nothing better to do ????
  10. Just visited a couple of moo barns (housing estates) where your neighbour is about 3 mters away ???? Nah, give me a farm in Isaan, with occasional interruptions, open roads most of the day, trouble free cycling, and quiet mostly interspaced with birdsong And a decent sized town 20 minutes away
  11. Bill I will say this, allow people to enjoy helping you, as you will have assisted others, never feel you are being a burden, you are providing people with the opportunity to repay your kindness
  12. I'm a bit younger than you Bill but insisted my wife have a license before I bought the truck, she doesn't like driving, not confident, but she has got used to me stopping and saying you drive, when we are on the quiet roads near home ???? I will build her confidence because the time will hopefully come when I feel I am too old to drive, hopefully not because of ill health more in the interests of safety ???? Just to say hope your efforts lead to success in dealing with the problem
  13. Looks like June and July may not be a very rainy season for some Lets hope enough to get crops established and not too much in August and September to flatten them
  14. Any statement followed by "It's for your own good" Tended to spawn negative feelings ????
  15. I observed their happiness levels, as per the tuck box comment, I was fortunate to be reasonably good at sport, but not interested in education I got away with it, there was a hard road for the less intelligent and non sporting people, that is the basis of my thoughts
  16. Richard I was a day boy at a public school and to see the highlight of the month being the 'tuck box' sent by parents did not endear me to the idea of children being boarded in the school environment, just my opinion of 'higher learning' Today I have been making oatmeal biscuit mix with my 4 year old grand daughter, teaching her how to break eggs into the mix, hopefully it will serve her well, making her own 'tuck box' memories of grandpa ????
  17. Ahhh but you see Richard it's the definition of success ???? of a happy healthy childhood, of pleasure in learning, not arduous tasking, send your kid to boarding school for a 'better quality' of education, but what of being raised in the family home, local lifelong friendships, being a success raising a child is surely not all about the salary they earn at the completion of education What about the pressures taking a high salary job brings with it, is that success, or partial failure, to push your child in a direction you feel is good I told my son school is important to learn to communicate read write and do maths, once you have those skills choose your direction in life when you are older, that's it, at the moment he plays games all day, if that makes him happy ???? ok by me
  18. Not family money, or connections? I think you may have it wrong for Thailand Although a fitting education is also good for success just starting out on a lower rung is all
  19. We have grand kids, sisters kids, and my 16 year old son who helps entertaining them, running about the the place I find the lack of 'me' time a hardship in the school holidays ???? my wife is great with them all, me l spend time with the grand kids, have no interest in being a father to the kids from the sister of my wife, even though the parents work away all year, I tolerate them, just about!! I do enjoy the time I spend with my family, but as I say need my 'me' time so happy when at school and no demanding attention for a few hours Is it because I am older, a little selfish, better things to be getting on with, tire more, or rather more tired after a day on the farm, no idea but I struggle with the idea of young kids 24/7 ????
  20. I am comfortable approaching death in Thailand, though hopefully more than few years away yet My biggest comfort is that since arriving in Thailand I couldn't fail to notice how my knowledge and experience is largely viewed as secondary to most Thai I can therefore die with confidence knowing life may well improve without me around, and the funeral will be a series of carefully coordinated events leading to a good meal and a plume of smoke ????
  21. How many Thai have gone out bought a new truck which has channelled their lifestyle down the basic existence track for the foreseeable future ???? Level of expectation is not fuelled by minimum wage rises
  22. 3 good responses above I make the point if a Thai generously gives away their last baht they will survive because they have family and friends Thai culture being what it is Buddha will provide No matter how jai dee the farang is, last baht, immigration could be knocking at his door and pointing homeward And that gentlemen and ladies highlights why there are differing views of adaptation/ implementation of Thai culture I am happy for my wife to take the lead, she is Thai this is Thailand, however as I come to understand more Thai and deal with people more regularly they do tend to include me in the 'explanation'
