After nearly thirteen years of being up close and personal to these children in adult bodies, I find it terrifying that they're allowed anywhere near a firearm, let alone being allowed to routinely carry one.
When I was on active duty with the British Army, we were only allowed two full magazines and these we used to have to sign out of the armoury. We were highly trained, had incredibly strict rules of engagement and if the weapon was fired, every round had to be accounted for. This in the middle of hostile territory with very few civilians around.
I wonder what the rules on firing the weapon are for the Thai police, many of whom are working in densely populated areas?

There are many more people than just me who are actively contributing, financially and otherwise, to extract Scotland from the UK. The momentum is well and truly with us; the UK is doomed.

I'm English and I'd like to contribute financially to get rid of Scotland. Can't stand the whinging.

He cares about his country. She will feel the same I'm sure, but she has no choice over this. She should send some people to The Tower. It's been a while since we have had a public execution and Cummings would definitely cry for the crowd. Boris too.
Why? For giving the people what they voted for?? I thought that was democracy.

Sorry, this is referring to marriage visa, not retirement, but thought it might be useful to some people. When I went to Jomtien immigration last week to have my visa confirmed after the 1 month wait for it to be returned by Bangkok, they didn't ask to see my bank book. I assume this means that if I'd wanted, I could've spent the 400k the day after the interview. There was also no mention of it during the interview.

I'm 64, not enough time left to make it worth moving.
Still considering France though, all depends on Brexit not happening.
As a single man at the time, I lived in a small town in France for a couple of years and nearly went crazy with boredom. All the bars seemed to close mid-evening and even when open, I hardly saw a female in them. I think they lock up all the women after dark, not that I saw many during the day. I also found the French more frustrating to deal with than the Thais. The best thing I ever did was move to Thailand, but even then it took me 10 years to sell my French apartment at a fraction of what I paid for it. If you do make the move there, I'd advise you to do the same as here - rent, don't buy. If you're someone who enjoys spending the evening in the bar, consider moving to a big city.

I've become fatalistic about the fact that one day in the not too distant future I'll have to leave my wife and stepdaughter here and move to another nearby country. I'm hanging on for as long as finance and visa rules allow.

White chav? I reckon a visit to Specsavers is long overdue.

“In these early stages we are keeping an open mind about the motivation of this terrible incident and the circumstances as we know them.
“Given the location of the incident and its nature, officers from Counter Terrorism Police North West are leading the investigation as we determine the circumstances.”
The second para answers the first. I'm no Einstein, but I think I know the motivation.

I think TVF is essential for keeping up with visa news, and I make sure I pay at least one brief visit daily. I try to block all the WUMs whose sole purpose in life seems to be to criticise people who are trying to sort out genuine problems on here. I also have no time for the rose coloured specs brigade who won't hear a word of criticism about Thailand or the Thais. By doing this it ensures that the forum isn't too cumbersome, not to mention annoying.

They can try all the gimmicks they want, but in my opinion it comes down mainly to what your normal tourist can afford and with the ridiculously expensive baht, not a lot.

With this said, I agree that medical insurance should be mandatory for all.
It's getting boring the farang who come on here claiming medical insurance should be mandatory for all. If you have the means and are fit and healthy, why should it be compulsory to waste massive amounts of money every year? I've used a hospital once in the twelve years I've been here for a small out-patient operation. for which I paid 7,000 baht in advance. At my age if I'd been medically insured for that time, I'd have paid around one and a half million baht in premiums, for 7,000 baht worth of treatment. If you think medical insurance is the thing for you, then fill your boots, but please don't wish it on everyone. I do have a small personal accident policy, by the way.

It’s pretty clear to me that someone in government has a stake in the health insurance industry and is simply drumming up business for it. I am 100% sure the majority of the unpaid bills by expats are those of tourists wheeled into emergency unconscious or need of immediate medical attention which then default on payment due to no physical funds or holiday travel insurance. Going to be interesting to see how this plays out for retirees. I’m pretty sure some genius is going to come up with a plan to issue false health insurance to satisfy the requirement. Are they going to set the amount you need to be insured for? Too many questions unanswered.
I remember a while back on here when the report named the committee originally set up to look into the possibly of this, several of the members were from the insurance industry. It was a foregone conclusion that it was going to be implemented.

I have not seen the numbers.. BUT if they are low, why would the Gov. get so involved and mandate med ins. Doesn't make sense to me...
Same reason that they've suddenly cracked down on TM30 requirement - commission!

I travel domestically all the time and never do a TM 30.
Jomtien. I hadn't done one since I returned from UK in 2012, but at this year's married visa extension a few weeks back I was sent out to complete one at counter 10. Fortunately, I didn't get fined, I assume because I haven't left the country since then and possibly my domestic trips haven't been registered by the resorts I stayed in.

Can't see anything un-PC in the heading, he's a man from China. Man from England = Englishman. Some people are continually looking for ways to be offended, I guess it's the snowflake generation.

OP, can you afford health insurance ?
If not, don't even concider Thailand for a long term stay.
If yes, go for it.
From his post it looks to me like he is financially secure and can self insure, as do a lot of us on here on long term stays. Why pour loadsa money down the drain every year when you're fit, exercise regularly and have a healthy lifestyle? I reckon he's the only one to judge whether or not he needs health insurance. Saying that, I do have a small accident insurance policy.

"I know Thailand has changed, as has the whole world, and more importantly WE as people have also changed, but if I ever have to leave here, for whatever reason, I can't see myself being bitter about Thailand, but would rather be thankful for having so many years of my life here, and have many memories that I will cherish for the rest of my life."
I feel almost the same as you, but I'd still curse the present govt for ruining the dream which I had for many years, and the reality I've had this past 12 years living here. The change in that time is astonishing. I am though sticking it out because I too like waking to the hot weather and having a Thai wife and stepdaughter makes leaving unthinkable. If I was single I'd be long gone, but to somewhere else warm.

Kudos to you for leaving Pattaya, though. Horrendous cess pool of a town.
There's a good chance that if you ever get to visit here you'll change your opinion. 12 years and I still love the place. Beats living in a hut in a jungle clearing.

I have just done my 90 day at Jomtien and was definitely not asked for TM30.
Actually I have never filed a TM30 in my 40 years here.
A few months ago I did my marriage extension and also letter for licence renewal...also not asked or even mentioned.
I have used Soi 8 and Jomtien over the years.
Maybe because I wear a tie..haha.
A couple of weeks ago I did my marriage extension at Jomtien and halfway through the process I was sent out to counter 10 to do a TM30. I must've been on record as having submitted one previously so no fine and slip issued. First time in 12 years I've been sent out to do one during extension application or 90 day reporting. I was wearing shirt with collar attached, slacks and shoes and the wife and I scrub up well ????

Immigration is not concerned with number of copies AFAIK. You should have only one double passport page near centered per copy - plenty of room to sign below the print.
At Jomtien, I was one occasion sent to the shop for new copies because I'd used both sides of an A4 sheet. This after years of doing just that. It may have been the IO on that particular day, but now I do two open passport copies (4 pages) on one side of each sheet. No doubt on some future visit I'll be told to use both sides.

I've just noticed that I repeated the word "morning" in the second sentence of my "New topic". Very careless of me. Is it possible for me to go in and edit the original, or do I have to always send a post like this correcting it?

Yes, it is an imposition and totally unnecessary in my opinion, but they have something I desperately want therefore I jump through the hoops. There was no interrogation.

Boy, 13, shot dead by police after father U-turns at northern Thai checkpoint
in Chiang Rai

Agreed, but the police should never have fired on the car without knowing who was in it as this case proves. Even firing to cause a blowout, could be equally as fatal. As it is, a kid has died over an offence which could warrant a 2000 baht fine. Reckless in the extreme.
